About B. League All-Star Game 2023 Op Art

B. League All-Star Game 2023 is a key visual created for a basketball event held in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. The design uses op art, an abstract style calculated to create a special visual effect. The layout is based on the grid board and round pieces of Othello, a board game that originated in Mito. Each square shows an image related to basketball or a building or landmark that symbolizes Mito. Rotating shapes and colors form animations that are full of movement. The visual was made to draw the audience into an immersive experience.

This ambitious environmental graphics installation exemplifies contemporary approaches to immersive branded experience design, where the boundaries between visual identity, architectural intervention, and spectacular entertainment dissolve into unified sensory environments. The work draws upon the rich heritage of Op Art pioneered by figures such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, translating their explorations of optical perception and geometric rhythm into a monumental scale suited to arena architecture, while simultaneously channeling the exuberant chromatic energy associated with Pop Art sensibilities and contemporary festival aesthetics. Each module within the comprehensive grid system functions as an autonomous graphic composition while contributing to a larger visual symphony, demonstrating sophisticated understanding of how pattern, color, and repetition operate across varying distances and viewing conditions within expansive architectural volumes. The designers appear to have carefully calibrated the relationship between individual legibility and collective impact, ensuring that spectators experience both intimate graphic details and overwhelming chromatic totality depending on their position within the venue. The integration of theatrical lighting extends the graphic language into three-dimensional space, with precisely directed beams creating ephemeral geometric structures that dialogue with the fixed patterns of the display surfaces. The warm materiality of the traditional hardwood playing surface grounds the visual spectacle in athletic authenticity, serving as a neutral field against which the chromatic celebration unfolds. This work invites contemplation of how graphic design might transcend two-dimensional surfaces to shape the character of shared public experiences, transforming functional spaces into sites of collective visual pleasure and communal celebration.

Inspiration
The clue to this design came from Othello, a board game that originated in Mito, the host city of the B.League All-Star Game 2023. We wondered if we could create a visual that would make the audience of the All-Star Game go crazy, based on the motif of the grid-shaped Othello board and circular pieces that all Japanese are familiar with, and came up with a rotating representation of colorful buildings symbolizing Mito and portraits of players based on the above shape.
