About Moon River Residential House

Moon River is a residential interior design for a home of 100 square meters. The interior applies a wabi-sabi approach, with quiet tones and generous open space. A round mirror at the entrance reflects light and visually extends the area. Floor-to-ceiling windows let daylight move through the rooms and change the shadows during the day. The wall behind the sofa is shaped like a perforated panel, forming a flexible area for storage and display of books and collectibles. Rattan details and beige tones on the television cabinet add natural warmth.

Moon River Residential House by Chung Yi Chun engages contemporary residential design discourse through a synthesis of organic architectural gesture and minimalist spatial discipline that positions the work within evolving dialogues surrounding domesticity, material authenticity, and the choreography of light within intimate human environments. The design demonstrates notable compositional sophistication through its deployment of the curved fenestration element as both formal anchor and luminous threshold, this sculptural intervention disrupting the orthogonal spatial envelope to introduce a softening gesture that mediates between interior sanctuary and exterior world while establishing a focal point of considerable visual magnetism that organizes surrounding elements into orbital relationship, the curved form echoing historical precedents from Alvar Aalto's biomorphic vocabularies through contemporary parametric explorations yet rendered here with restraint that privileges atmospheric effect over formal declaration. The chromatic achievement resides in the subtle calibration of warm neutral tones that establish environmental serenity without lapsing into coldness, the terrazzo aggregate surfaces providing controlled chromatic incident through their scattered mineral inclusions that catch and diffract light while maintaining overall tonal cohesion, this material choice referencing mid-century European design traditions while accommodating contemporary preferences for textural depth and artisanal character within otherwise minimal palettes. Technical facility evidences itself in the precise integration of architectural millwork, lighting infrastructure, and finish materials into seamless spatial composition where functional requirements dissolve into atmospheric totality, the storage wall system providing necessary domestic accommodation while maintaining visual quietude through chromatic restraint and proportional refinement, the lighting design layering ambient, task, and natural sources to achieve the diffused luminosity characteristic of Northern European domestic interiors yet here inflected with the spatial fluidity and threshold ambiguity more commonly associated with contemporary Japanese residential practice. The work explores themes of domestic retreat and cultivated simplicity, suggesting inquiry into how contemporary living environments might provide psychological sanctuary through material restraint and spatial clarity while maintaining sensory richness through textural variety and calibrated luminosity, the design seemingly meditating upon thresholds between interior and exterior, enclosure and openness, architectural geometry and organic gesture, creating liminal spatial conditions that invite contemplation and facilitate the everyday rituals of domestic inhabitation. The inclusion of natural elements through the pampas grass arrangement and the filtering of daylight through diaphanous textile layers suggests engagement with biophilic design principles and the human need for connection to natural phenomena even within controlled interior environments, while the restrained material palette and emphasis on negative space reference minimalist aesthetic philosophies that privilege absence and restraint as generative forces rather than deprivation. One might consider how this interior environment proposes a particular mode of contemporary dwelling that balances functional accommodation with atmospheric poetry, how the soft geometries and diffused luminosity create conditions for both social gathering and solitary retreat, and whether such spaces offer models for residential environments that support psychological wellbeing through measured sensory engagement rather than stimulative excess.

Production Technology
The design of the living room places equal emphasis on "blank space" and "details." The back wall of the sofa is shaped like a perforated board to create a flexible storage and display area that combines beauty and practicality, allowing collectibles, books, and decorations to present an artistic level under the changes of light and shadow. The TV cabinet uses rattan details and beige tones to add a touch of natural warmth to the space, making the wabi-sabi style not only "simple" but also rich in a warm quality of life.
Design Challenge
A window is not only the boundary of a home, but also the focus of light and shadow.
Project Duration
The project had finished in 2024.
Operation Flow
Floor-to-ceiling windows allow light to travel freely within the space, creating the changing beauty of day and night. When the morning light penetrates and reflects on the delicate beige floor, the space looks warm and soft; when night falls, the unique chandelier design adds a quiet atmosphere to the space, creating a comfortable night scene.
Research
At the entrance, the artistic mirror design is like a lake reflecting the moon, reflecting the flow of light and shadow and creating the first impression of the home. The mirror subtly extends the sense of space, broadens the view at the entrance, and welcomes everyone who returns home.
Inspiration
The design cleverly integrates the simple atmosphere of wabi-sabi into daily life. From the round mirror at the entrance to the floor-to-ceiling windows full of visual fluidity, every place exudes a natural and quiet atmosphere, allowing light to pour in gently, bringing about changing light and shadow like a moon river.
