About Xtension Multifunctional light

Xtension is an adjustable lamp designed for homes and public spaces. The lamp extends from 1500 mm to 3000 mm and retracts again, while spherical latch points allow fixing to uneven surfaces. The body is made of aluminum and steel, and the rotating heads at both ends are in chromed or brushed steel. Three outer LED strips and an inner LED bar provide dimmable colour light, set through a mobile application over a Bluetooth connection. Xtension can serve as a ceiling light, a floor lamp, a dividing light or, in a cluster, a signal light.

Andrea Cingoli's Xtension Multifunctional light exemplifies the contemporary convergence of precision engineering and sculptural sensibility that characterizes the most compelling developments in twenty-first century lighting design. This modular system, comprising interconnected polished chromium tubes housing integrated LED light sources, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of how functional objects might transcend their utilitarian origins to participate in the aesthetic life of architectural space. The design engages productively with modernist traditions of material honesty and geometric clarity while introducing a dynamic compositional flexibility that allows each installation to respond uniquely to its spatial context. Technical accomplishment manifests throughout the system's elegant resolution of complex engineering challenges: the seamless integration of electrical components within the tubular housing, the precision-machined joint connections that permit multiple angular configurations, and the refined mounting details that minimize visual interference while ensuring structural integrity. The chromatic restraint of the polished metal surfaces serves both practical and aesthetic functions, enabling the fixture to harmonize with diverse interior palettes while celebrating the inherent beauty of reflective metallic surfaces animated by light. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of the relationship between the fixed and the flexible, the permanent architectural shell and the adaptable interventions that mediate between structure and inhabitant. One might observe resonances with constructivist investigations into spatial dynamics, or perhaps with more recent explorations of parametric design principles translated into tangible material form. The installation context, with its dialogue between industrial refinement and organic wooden surfaces, suggests how such objects might bridge seemingly disparate aesthetic traditions. How might the viewer's own spatial imagination be activated by considering the infinite configurational possibilities this system presents?

Unique Properties
Xtension is the first completely adjustable lamp in all its forms. It can extend and retract and be fastened to uneven surfaces thanks to its spherical latch points. This makes it capable of become a living object in one’s decor. When installed in a cluster it can become an element of communication, since its LEDs are programmable. Thus it becomes a signal light saying what is going on behind a door, like if a washroom is occupied, or indicate directions of intended travel. The combinations are limitless and can also be applied to art. All attached variables can be controlled via cell phone app.
Dimensions & Packaging
W100mm x D100mm x H1500mm
In particular
Length:from 1500mm to 3000 mm.
Diameter,including extension poles: 100mm.

The sale will be done via a tube shaped package with a carrying strap which makes the case a carrier for designs and projects. Externally BUILD YOUR SPACE will be written in reference to the possibility of creating and characterizing spaces with the lamp.

Production Technology
The body is in aluminum and steel with a brushed or polished finished. The 3 rails allow the lights to extend and retract. The light sources are 3 LED strips on the outside and a LED bar in the inside. The LED can dim and are rgb. The rotating heads at the extremities are in chromed or brushed steel. The extremities also house the electronics that regulate the LED with a remote Bluetooth connection.
Design Challenge
My research was to give a more interesting and pleasing form, poetic almost, to a project that seems to conclude naturally with the technological development. The materials, the dimensions and the choice of functions and technologies to include are all critical to the objective, alongside creating and intelligent object by form and high tech content. The tech here is a function, not the essence of xtension: not just a lamp but a different way of decorating.
Project Duration
The project started in Febrary 2016 and finished in October 2016 In Teramo.
Operation Flow
The installation is the most interesting part of the project. The lamp can be a ceiling light, a floor lamp, a dividing light, an art object. Once the intended use is decided amd the object anchored, al the light parameters can be set via app: visual comfort, colour, static or dynamic light. These can all be progammed from your device. This makes extension not only a domestic object but one for public spaces as well.
Research
My project was based on the will to create conceptually intelligent objects. As opposed to tech intelligence, I believe that the insertion of intelligence has to come before connectivity, electricity and automatism. The object needs to speak to its user at first impact, via its form, its conceptual and constructive essence. The user was to be able to imagine and guide the use of objects, not rely on the logic of a manual.
Inspiration
Architecture and inspiration travel hand in hand. In this case the basic mechanism was inspired by the objects I saw used to make damaged buildings stable during repairs after the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. The same mechanism allows one to extend a light from 1500 mm to 3000 mm allowing it to be put in any household room. There is also the possibility of creating larger versions for commercial purposes.
