The designer creates this lighting installation as an image of life. The design is made of transparent as well as reflective components. Like the interior of a space that people belong to, the activities occurring around the components are similar to going through a series of inter-reflections. People are encouraged to walk around this lighting installation to learn the multi-oriented reflectivity of life, through different levels of transparency.

Interview with Naai-Jung Shih on Life Lighting installation

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The display scenario is to create a field to attract people no matter the light is on or off.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
This design creates an image of life from the boundary and interiors of a space that we belong to.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
It’s not being produced or used by another company. I plan to sell or lease the production rights or to produce my work by myself.
What made you design this particular type of work?
Design a building is a challenge. It’s even harder to design a space using the metaphor of a building. The metaphor behind the building metaphor is a lighting installation.
Who is the target customer for his design?
This is for individuals, collectors, interior designers, or architects.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
People traverse around box exteriors would discover different oriented reflectivity of life, through different levels of transparency of reality.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
A rather traditional architectural design approach: making 3D models and 3D simulation of lights.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
It’s the knowledge of material and the experiment of the transmission of light through it.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
The first challenge is to design a space using the metaphor of a building. Another challenge is to incorporate two types of order: the objects and the reflections.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
I think it’s time to meet people, to introduce myself, and discuss concept with people.
