My Own Stadium Collection
by Geumi Lee

  • Awarded April 15, 2017

  • 1.999

Geumi Lee's spring 2017 collection "My Own Stadium" is designed for type of women she aspires to be. Although this all white collection seems subtle at first, it makes a strong conceptual statement. The collection appropriates traditionally masculine details and adapts them using unique fabrics and construction techniques into sexy, sophisticated and empowering women's wear. What was once men's sportswear, becomes women's power wear. It becomes each women's own stadium

Interview with Geumi Lee on My Own Stadium Collection

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
Combing atheleticism and orientalism to empower the women who wear my clothes.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
I wanted to create a collection that was both beautiful and powerful.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
I plan to exhibit this collection further and someday develop my own line.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
I was inspired to design a collection around this concept because I feel that clothing should push the boundaries and preconceptions of society, and through that empower the people who wear those clothes.
What made you design this particular type of work?
My own background and heritage heavily influenced my decision to design around this concept.
Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
The work of Hood By Air and Masion Margiela both heavily inspired the design of this collection.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
I think it makes a strong statement, but does it in a more subtle fashion than other similiar collection.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
Its about women taking what they want from traditional masculine activities and traditions and claiming it as their own.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
I used fitting on models, sketching and draping as my main tools.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
I worked by myself on this design concept, but had professors who helped me with the technical details.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
Technology plays a big part in the construction and application of unique materials in this design.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
My collection was well received at NY fashion week and I was encouraged by many people to submit it to international competitions.
What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
I learned how much I love the design process, I am more interested in the process than the final show.
