Lucky for jet-setting pets everywhere, dog accessories label Cloud 7 and travel brand TUMI have collaborated on a sophisticated luxury flight carrier. While most pet carriers in the market have a ostensibly trendy approach, Cloud7's design of the carrier focusses on functionality while still being very elegant in it's shape. With airline regulations in mind, the two creative teams fashioned a design-conscious carrier with a plush wool interior, water-resistant lining, a shoulder strap that doubles as a leash and many additional extras for a dog's first class journey.

Interview with Petra Jungebluth on Cloud7 for TUMI Dog Flight Cabin Carrier

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
There is an amount of people who are travelling with their dogs. When they have small dogs they are allowed to bring the dog into the flight cabin. Because this is a niche target group there are hardly any products on the market that are fulfilling the needs of the dogs for this occasion.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
It was simply to design the best possible carrier for small dogs and puppies according to IATA rules.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
The design process was pretty quick, from first sketch to final product roundabout 12 months.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Cloud7 has been on the market for several years and has gained some reputation for high quality and stylish dog accessories, when we were approached by US luxury travel brand TUMI to design a special dog travel range. The City carrier was part of this range and got launched under the name Cloud7 for TUMI and was distributed via both brands retail and online channels.
What made you design this particular type of work?
Being a brand that supplies high end dog accessories, we are very aware of what the dog needs for his comfort and we just applied this knowledge and the insights to the special situation of the dog travelling in a flight cabin.
Who is the target customer for his design?
Everybody who travels a lot and doesn't want to do this without its dog.
