Interview with Jeff Ching-Wen Chang on 90 Deg Bamboo Chair Within Bag

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
One simple and quick way of operation to meet the need of feeling legs tired when people go outdoors. Turn 90 Deg 90 degrees to make a bag become a temporary seat for relaxing.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
The biggest challenge was trying to find an ideal solution that can balance the need of a temporary seat and a daily use bag. The hardest part is how to create a way of operation which is pretty easy for people to use when doing the transforming of two types. While still need to maintain the advantage as a bag to carry daily items and as a chair to withstand the weight of the user.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
For now this work has been protected by patents. While it can be launched to the market, but still being the need of some selling promotion & market strategy for showing in the stores and other works.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
This work is my graduation project of bachelor degree of industrial design, and it took me a whole year to test every kind of possibilities.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Based on the daily observation and experience from other people and myself, the need of a temporary seat is a challenge that can be worked on. In some situations when people go outdoors such as waiting in line or walking for a long time, the need of resting happen when people feel their legs tired. Thus, I tried to solve this problem with my professional skill of industrial design, and tested many kinds of models in the period of the development process.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
Since this work is my graduation project, and I created a Facebook fan page called "Doublibre" to run the project as a brand. The work is not selling yet, and has been protected by patents. If there is someone who is interested in cooperating with me, please send a formal email to contact me for the further discussion!
What made you design this particular type of work?
I was fascinated with the relationship between the behavior of the user and the object the user use. To study the using situation of the product is interesting. And I try to search a simple way to solve an urban daily life problem of being in need of temporary seat by mixing different elements from multi-fields. 90 Deg is an accessory people would use every day with the feature of fashion design while it also combines with the thinking of product design on the design of the bag and the user-experience.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
The mixed feature of 90 Deg makes it can be a bag which is not just a bag, and a temporary seat which is not just a chair.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
90 Deg is named after its main concept of the operation of the transforming of the bag and the temporary seat.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
I used wood, steel, aluminum as the testing model in the early development. The final model is made of the laminated bamboo with CNC, and the sewing skill for making the bag parts.
What is the most unique aspect of your design?
The design of the way of operation and the structure. These two factors help each other to create a user-friendly feature and firm enough to sit on the design of 90 Deg.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
I had collaborated with the technicians of CNC and discussed the details of making the bag parts with skilled workers during the development.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
Use the feature of modern industrial manufacturing (CNC) on a traditional craft material (Laminated Bamboo) to make the product can be able to produce in the mass production. Also, the natural bamboo material makes every holder being one of a kind, creating its unique feature while still can be produced by the spirit of precision and craft.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Use the reference about the size of 15-inch laptop and documents can be put into a daily bag. And utilize the information on ergonomics to create a 45 centimeters of seat height, users can sit comfortably and feel relaxed. Users can go outdoors with 90 Deg while carrying their daily items and being able to sit with elegant sitting posture.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
Consider the structure of 90 Deg with its material and define the size of the product. How to make the possibility for users to sit on within the size of a handbag, and also keep the strength of the structure while still maintain a user-friendly operation. And decrease the weight of the holder while balance the need of maintaining the strength of the structure to withstand the weight of the user, so there is a design of the lightweight holder for users to carry outdoors.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
I would like to push myself to the limit to try to creating the product with high level quality, and be able to be qualified by worldwide level contest, also join the field of high level designers around the world.
What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
I had learned lots of knowledge which is beyond the making of the product when I worked with people with technical skills. They are more about the useful skills or inspired conversation in these professional fields. How did these skilled people think about the product widened my vision. Also, they awakened me I should not limit myself just thinking as a designer, but thinking about other aspects from multifield to improve my skill.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
90 Deg has won the Golden A' Design Award from A' Design Award & Competition. Also, it's very honorable to be able to be featured on Behance of Product Design & Student Show. Thanks to many kind people who help during the process of making 90 Deg come to this world and also to the judges. This work is my graduation project of bachelor degree of industrial design, and it took me a whole year to test every kind of possibilities. What a tough time of the development, but I really enjoyed the period of creating and thinking.
