About dsignedby

dsignedby is a Serbian design studio founded by Irena Kilibarda (architect) and Iva Kilibarda (graphic designer) working internationally. We rely on an ancient philosophy of natural elements "Fire, Water, Air & Earth" combined with rays of light to create, with simplicity and eager, contemporary - transparent - light, but solid ideas. We tend to use sustainable materials and technologies in our designs. The sister's love of design began at an early age: "When we were young we used to play with Majorette toy cars. We would push everything in our room to be able to construct a town (you can imagine mom’s face seeing our room in that hectic state!). Every inch of the floor of our room was covered by cleverly built streets. I always loved building – having something in mind and being able to make it happen."

Interview with dsignedby

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
From an early age I liked to draw. I studied architecture and wanted always to become an interior designer. Throughout the interior design projects I started working on different types of lighting design projects as well as furniture designs.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
dsignedby is founded during the year of 2008 by Iva (visual communication professional) and Irena Kilibarda (architect). It is a small studio working internationally mainly in the fields of interior design, visual communication and product design.
What is "design" for you?
Design is making ideas come true- producing your imagination. It is a combination of different forms of art and engineering.
When do you feel the most creative?
Usually when travelling by plane, or during the evenings when it is calm
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I am always present during the whole process of production or manufacture; I like seeing the product or interior project grow
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
possibility of manufacture/production, function, design lines, its' use
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was during Milano Fuorisalone, Superdesign Show in Superstudio group/ Tortona 27, Milano/ 14-19.04.2015 and the ''Simplicity of Black&White'' dsignedby exhibition at Stilwerk limited edition contemporary design gallery Hamburg/ 20.03-16.05.2015 Milano EXPO from 1st of May, taking part of pavillion Serbia, Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster

Extended Interview with dsignedby

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
I have studied architecture in Belgrade Faculty of Architecture and while studying started working on projects. I have applyed at the Faculty of Architecture, but always wanted to work in interior design projects, which became my main occupancy during the past 10 years.
What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
Designer.. well, if someone mentioned to me earlier that I will become, next to my interior designing job, a furniture designer, exhibit throughout the world and in the end have my own production, I wouldn't believe that person. New technologies, materials used in design motivate me. The force that pulls you to do more and go further, create something new.
Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?
I chose to become a designer, since I was always a good drawer and a creative person.
What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
I designed throughout my interior design projects many different things, concerning housing, shop design or hotel design. Through these interior projects I got the ideas of products that I started producing and selling - tables, luminaires, housing elements, kitchens.. I will design more of furniture and equipment in the next years to come.
What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?
I find that I am just at the beggining of a designer career process. Young designers have to love what they do, inform themselves of what exhists already in design and follow the work of older designers. They should learn a lot throughout their lives to find the right formula for becoming design legends.
What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
Good design has to be at the same time functional, useful, sustainable, long lasting as well as good looking.
