Interview with Elkan Nuri

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
1.Even before I learned how to talk, I remember rejecting walking when I saw that my shoelaces were not symmetrical, I loved drawing at an early age. I wan involved with different types of art however I have decided to become a product designer when I was around 25. Even if it was late, I believe that I have given the right decision. Design has become a lifestyle for me. Often times I feel like I am having fun in the companies where I have worked. When the opportunities are fairly limited, it is unbelievably enjoyable for me to create solutions for the limited opportunites.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ENDESIGN designs products creating enjoyable solutions to the problems at the core of the life, it also provides design services for the market.
What is "design" for you?
Things that exist in the universe are the combination of one or more potentials in a perfect way.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Environmentally friendly and stimulating products that create enjoyable solutions for problems.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
The Gladiator is one of the designs that I like the most, it reflects my stance against the difficulties in my life. The product’s value increases as it gets old, the product is currently on sale.
When do you feel the most creative?
When I make all of the details of the product that I have designed in a conscious and calculated way after I have set it up.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Materialization of the the product that I have designed is very important for me.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
While I am designing, I feed my mind with positive feelings by making my mind believe that I would succeed in cases which appear impossible.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I get more passion for work. I feel like I have passed one additional step.
What makes a design successful?
Realization of a unique idea in the most correct way. Either small or big, the ability to succeed while he problem appears to be impossible.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I look at the 10 basic criteria of design. Materialization of it is in the forefront for me.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
It is important to design useful and environmental products for the humanity and to design more environmental products in the gradually polluted world.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The field of design has been expanding due to the advancements in technology and the needs of the people, and it will continue to develop in an unlimited way.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I have attended the 2018 İstanbul Building Fair (I have attended with the VİZ VİZ product). There will be more fair attendance in the future.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Inspiration may be obtained from everything, however it depends on how you look at it, the mysteries of the creation of the universe are my biggest source of inspiration.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Everything needs to perform its function in the simplest way as it is supposed to be. Designing the product that I am designing as if I am breathing into it from my soul. As if it is a part of mine...
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Turkey, and the environment in which I live naturally affect my designs. When I design extraordinary products, it becomes difficult to put them across. People’s support for cooperativeness during the production stage is of their advantage.
How do you work with companies?
I work in a project-based way. I like to work with firms that are open to innovation with a wide vision.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
They may choose by looking at the portfolio, and also they may try to solve a sample problem. Just finishing the design school does not necessarily mean to have a designer spirit.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
By handling all of the details in the product, I approach the product as if I am recreating it.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Seiko watch, Seisol glasses, General Mobile phone, tea cup. Asus WT425 Black Optic USB Wireless Mouse.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I wake up very early in the mornings and I spare one hour if there is a topic that I need to learn, then I have my breakfast. I work for 9 hours. When I go home, I improve mysefl regarding design for two hours after the dinner. Sometimes I watch a science fiction movie. Sometimes I read books.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Passion and faith, travelling accordingly by knowing the strengths and weaknesses of one’s own. No opportunity comes to your feet by itself, you need to create it.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The positive side is to become a master in establishing relations with people,  to gain reputation. I learn how to think about the fine details in every subject matter , it allows to act by calculating the outcomes, when needed I gain the ability to think more flexibly to find a solution for the problem. The negative side is sometimes to be forced to do the idea which appears to be stupid upon the request of the customer. The inability to completely convey the details of design to the other person.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
To do your own thing, this only makes you first and one and only in the world.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Before starting to work, to make detailed investigation regarding the topic, to make the analyisis of the factors on the design in a detailed way, to prioritize the realization of the product that I have imagined, to push my limits, to contemplate on the subject matter deeply, to set up the idea in three dimensions in the virtual environment.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
The programs that I use are Rhino, Keyshot and Fusion, my source of inspiration is the nature itself, science fiction movies, hit music, the book – The Holy Qur’an and the unbelievable information and mysteries in it, Latino dance and exercising.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I think much faster as time diminishes, I push my limits, sometimes I sacrifice from my sleep. I spare all of my remaining time to the subject matter only after I fulfill my urgent needs. I try to stay away from everything that would distract me.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It changes depending on the product, sometimes I design an ordinary product for two days, and sometimes I spend a year for A Design Award, and it worths. The realization of an idea becomes naturally willing and fast as much as the excellence of the idea.
What was your most important job experience?
It made me happy to submit my finishing project even before graduating (Eskişehir, Turkey).
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like to blend and finalize the needs of the customers with my own thoughts.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
More like, getting the A Design Award. To bring my own company to a better place.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Most of the time, single, you may decide everything by yourself, unity may be provided in design. Sometimes, I work as part of a team.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
I try to get the A Design Award by using an ordinary material in an extraordinary way and by integrating this with the design :)

Designer of the Day Interview with Elkan Nuri

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated in 2011. (Anadolu University – Industrial Design), I worked in different sectors, I decided to follow my dreams and established ENDESIGN, my own company, in 2017, I continue to provide design services both for myself and for big companies.
How did you become a designer?
I used to check whether my shoelaces were symmetrical or not at an early age even before I started to talk. I have started to draw pictures at an early age. I believe that I perform a profession for which I was born, I have gained experience in the boat building sector, medical sector, furniture sector and urban furniture sector.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
1. Setting up stage is the most important, 2. I develop the product by making the prototype after I have drawn it in the virtual environment. 3. The product that I have designed needs to perform its function in the most basic way, I also pay attention to the fact that it is environmentally friendly. Just drawing it in the virtual environment and visualizing it would not be enough, the virtual environment does not completely address the human feelings. The physical prototype is helpful in this regard.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
While designing a product, there are definitely painful periods, however when I start passing those obstacles one by one, and as every drawn line starts to have a meaning, it gives unbelievable pleasure to have everything in place. Design process is nice with the accompanying music or audio book.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Dancing professionally has provided me much motivation. It has given me a different experience to slow down and watch the dance video and trying to do the moves by perceiving them in 3 dimensions. And the extraordinary successful music that I listen, stimulate different cells in the human brain by creating sparks.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
It would limit me much to list the designers that I like. Indeed, the Creator or the nature itself is my biggest source of inspiration. I have no concern for being remembered by others, my only concern is to explore the unlimited potential in me. There are designs that I have been doing, however I believe that my projects will come to better places due to my improvement in the future. I want to bring my own company to a better position and I want to reach out to more people.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
To know one’s self better and to specialize in a sector accordingly. To express the inner thoughts in a good or bad way without being influenced by others. To be able to defend the design made by oneself, to be able to support it, to pay attention that there is unity in the design. To try to follow the 10 golden rules of design. To make models and prototypes other than the virtual drawings and to analyze them.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
8.There is no need to be in a state where you race with others, what makes you, is your thoughts and feelings. Your product will be unique. This is also the case for others. Share your information with your colleagues so that your information and happiness will increase more. There is no need to act in a prejudiced way; otherwise there are things that you are going to lose. There is no place for arrogance.
What is your day to day look like?
It allows me to start the day happy to sleep less, learn a command in the drawing program after waking up or to obtain information. I happily make the calculation of what type of difficult design process that I am going to encounter today. It makes me happy to solve a small problem during the day, to be able to assist my colleague, to obtain an experience through my own effort, and not to understand how the day has passed so quickly.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I don’t follow the design trends much. I try to use natural materials. I observe how designers are inspired by the nature while I study the products of other successful designers. At the end, I am enchanted by the nature with great admiration and I try to be inspired by the nature.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
A good design may be perhaps a very well set up design, perhaps a very well production method was provided, perhaps it is an environmental product which is not very aesthetic, and perhaps the cost of the same product was reduced. These are separately or altogether the indicators of a successful product.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
A spark is created in me after I have completed the product; I believe that everything is where it is supposed to be. However, I am aware that the better may be made all the time. The better design is unlimited, generally the customers are time and cost, thus you need to quit. But I always seek the better in the unconscious mind.
What is your biggest design work?
Eskişehir concept Tramway Stops Project. It has contributed me much as my graduation project obtained the highest mark and I was able to continue the project after school and was able to sell it to the municipality where I was located at, it became one of the most important transformation points for me on the way to become a designer. The other transformation point will be the A Design Award .
Who is your favourite designer?
I would like to talk with the universe and the nature. How have you designed this delicate and good? I would like to ask about the details of design. I would like to ask about the mysteries of creation, get answers for them and use that information in my products.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I have a very simple lifestyle. I have adapted to the culture in Turkey fast. I spend time to dance with the friends whom I love, I follow current issues. In the real sense, it makes me happy to just feed my brain. Neither money, nor a beautiful car makes me happy. I design a toy park for children in a big firm currently. We live in a gradually polluted world; I try to make producing environmentally friendly products the corporate policy of the firm.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I adopted working individually as I have my own firm. However, in the environments where I am, I pay attention to the fact that my colleagues in are sharers and affectionate as I am. The failure of the design process to work well is one of the difficulties in my firm. But no difficulty influences my ideas and thoughts. I pay attention to the fact that my friends are open to criticism including myself.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I have designed a logo in the Social Volunteers Movement Project. I would like to design toys for orphaned children. I would like to take part in many projects in this area.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
1. Self-esteem, 2. Being known, to get to the next big target, 3. The fact that the award evaluations allow me to gain experience just like school juries, 4. Certification, the number of likes and views of my profile, 5. Being able to go beyond myself, push the limits, 6. You may not purchase the information which is obtained here with money:)
