Interview with Mingbin Yang

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Since I was a child, I was keen on art, and I began to make my bow to study in academic of fine art when I was in secondary school. And then in college, I chose the school of art and design, which is mainly study the modernistic style and the axis relationship between indoor and outdoor space. I have always been in the hope that to be a designer with sense of social responsibility and always love design. My own faith is the definition, and just the faith makes me to work in the field of design and to be a good designer.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The studio is more like a family, because I think my life and work are not independent, but they can be blended together, which seems like displaying a kind of new life style.
What is "design" for you?
Design, which can changes our existing life, and makes us realize the yearning life. Moreover, design can create value in commercial field.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like to design some public space to serve people, consider more details and people foremost, and make them feel the power of design.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Public space, because this kind of space can combine the design and art, emphasize on the functional space, people foremost, pay attention to details, and make our life change into more interesting.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The development of the internet makes design more diversified. The future of design is to pay more attention to the experience and feelings of people.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
The latest exhibition is last year in Guangzhou, China. My next exhibition should be in Shanghai, China. And my final goal is to exhibit in Milan, Italy.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My design inspiration comes from the focus of life. My creativity is from the quality of life. And my inspiration comes from the experience of life.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I am demonstrated by modernistic style, and deeply effected and enlightened by Le Corbusier. My design style: do not make surplus( unnecessary) design. My design approaches: the mastery of space proportion is very exquisite; and try my best to present the aesthetic feeling of space.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
China. The cultural heritage of the country is influential on my design. Because of the development of the internet, and the rapid development in the field of design, which creates more opportunities and challenges. Meanwhile, the whole field appears fickleness and the sense of seeking quick success and instant benefits.
How do you work with companies?
We all gave full play to our advantages, which is complementary and made things conduct smoothly.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
It will effect on the lifetime of career development that if you have faith for design; in addition, a calm heart can create more good design. And no hurry and no busy is a good state for design.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
The in-depth research of design project, putting forward the core value point,and adopting the design which is appropriate for the development of project.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
First, the project of SOHO designed by Zaha Hadid. Second, the project of museum designed by Tadao Ando. Third, the project of Soho designed by Kengo Kuma. Forth, the project of SOHO designed by Seung H-ang. Fifth, the West Kowloon Cultural District designed by Rem Koolhaas.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The negative aspect is that bad income affects life. The positive aspect is to see the realization of project, to get the permission of design field and to see the hope of insisting.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
In the process of design, which involves books and the ordinary accumulation of life experience.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Combining exertion and rest, and devoting my mind into design when I am working.
Who are some of your clients?
Those who is similar to my own age and have common taste for aesthetic feeling.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Indoor space, because it is the container which is equipped with people’s life and activity.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I plan to design and research in the field of articles of daily use. And next, I will sense our life and its quality.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Yes, I have. The relation of an art device in indoor space, which has a better present for the character of the indoor space.
