Interview with ARTTA Concept Studio

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I used to be a software designer up until I finished secondary school. I got the chance to help my friend design a restaurant, and then I was inspired to follow the path to study interior architecture in university.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ARTTA Concept Studio is an International Multi-Award Winning innovative interior.architecture design firm based in Hong Kong, established in 2010. The philosophy behind ARTTA comes from the word ART that defines our soul and with Architecture being our intelligence, combining these together bringing ART To Architecture. Our team are built from talented individuals who have been trained globally and have unified together to work seamlessly to create projects with craftsmanship, timelessness and endless possibilities; designs that have their own characteristics. We are professional and dedicated to design excellence, by providing a fresh approach to each project, utilising our talented and passionate team allows us to create unique experiences and atmospheres. Our team of designers will work closely with each client to create their vision and produce a design that will help with their commercial success.
What is "design" for you?
The first 50% of a project is achieved by firstly solving the problem, the other half is about creating a smart and beautiful idea to finish it.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
After finishing my interior architecture degree in Australia, I had an opportunity to help design a boutique hotel with a friend in Hong Kong.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I was brought up in Hong Kong—a very compact place in this world but also a very exciting place that holds all the latest trends from all over the world. I went to Sydney from high school up until university. I graduated from the University of New South Wales with a bachelor’s degree in interior architecture. From living in these two different places, it allowed me to grasp an understanding of the cultural differences, thus leading me to bring the best of both Asia and Western design elements into my portfolio.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
The first 50% of a project is achieved by firstly solving the problem, the other half is about creating a smart and beautiful idea to finish it.

After finishing my interior architecture degree in Australia, I had an opportunity to help design a boutique hotel with a friend in Hong Kong. I really enjoyed that, and then I started up my own company—ARTTA Concept Studio.

Passion and observation are always the key point to success. You will be keep feeling lost, but it is fine to feel lost in the process, just keep going on.

Constantly observe the market and find out what the market lack of. Fill in the gap of the market.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
As long as you feel good and the design do its functions. There is no justification on beauty.
What is your biggest design work?
An industrial building conversion hotel project, because there were many regulations and architectural manners that needed to be fulfilled. We came across a lot of challenges but pulled through it and created a seamless design for the Hotel.
