About 1983ASIA

It comes from a faith. 1983 ASIA is co-founded by Su SU (Tianjin, China) and YAO (Malaysia) in Shenzhen China. We are very glad that we were guided by K&L. After years of experience of handling projects, we made several brands also achieve ourselves. However, after the joy come again and again, it left us endless thought. We grew up in Asia which was measured by western culture. In this case, the identity of Asian is getting vague. We used to let the treasure of us go, but we have to learn how to reunite the world. The cultural convergence left us regret for globalization and internationalization.“Sometimes, traditional Asian culture is a fetter of western.”We are inspired astonishingly that only tracing to the source can solve the inner contradiction. Based on Asian and designer, we tried to break the bound of concepts and used art design to show our experience and achievement through studying Asian culture.Turning invisible culture into glamorous Asian visual product is the lost-for–long happiness that we reach for in the world.

Interview with 1983ASIA

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
We’re 1983ASIA, YAO from Malaysia, and SUSU from China. Different regional origins bring wonderful cultural shock. We love designing and will cling to it.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Everything is oriented form a belief. 1983ASIA was co-founded by Su Su (Tianjin, China) and YAO(Malaysia) in Shenzhen, China. Integrating a design perspective into Asian culture, the studio establishes the mixed esthetics in Asia. They are members of IAD (International Association of Designers). it had over 400,000 views as of February 2017 on the homepage of BEHANCE, the world largest art display platform. Its excellent works have been recommended for 12 times and used as the cover of the magazine CUTOUT for Red Dot Design Award and the cover of 「Chinese Design」. Its works won A’DESIGN AWARD, TDC Award and HKDA Global Design Award. It was honored as CTA, APD, GALLERY- The World's Best Graphics, BRAND International Business Communication Design, 25 Asian Creative Design Studios…and its books with international influence were published. It held a solo exhibition 「AMAZING 1983ASIA 」in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2016, attended the vision communication invitation exhibition 「The Lost Culture」 and exhibited its works in Moscow, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Seoul and Taiwan. As two of the 100 top-most Chinese designers in the world, they are also active participators in International cultural and design exchanges.
What is "design" for you?
Design is bundled with commercial society, also closely related to art. Designers should be able to possessboth the features and work between sense and sensibility.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
We like trying and challenging different designs. We always prefer the next work.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Welike trying different materials and techniques. For this, we often do research inourcooperative factories.
When do you feel the most creative?
The process of research is the most enjoyable. We satisfy our curiosity, enrich our knowledge, enlarge our views, and explore the creative universe at the same time.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Generally, it’s very commonfor designers to be labeled as “commercial” or “artistic”. They’re inclined to transfer their disappointment in commercial design into theirpersonal artistic design. So, some see the commercial design as a means of making a living, remaining passionlessor even gloomy. But design is born for commerce. A good design shouldboth satisfy the commercial function and contain cultural genes, combining innovation to design quality, so as to impresspeople. As a result, there is no clear-cut among commerce, design and arts, needless to say a hierarchy. The only standard to measure the works is how sincere you are.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
We held our individual tour exhibition “AMAZING 1983ASIA” in 2016 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and participated in the visual exchange exhibition “Lost Culture” in Moscow, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Seoul and Taiwan.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
One of us is from Tianjin, China, the other from Malaysia. Such a great spanning is a source ofour stronginterest in Asia where we live, and prompts us to doubt and rethink aboutthe West-originated notion of “design”. Now the Indian myth is whatobsessesus . During the research, we’ve found some interesting potential links among Asians. All these experiences are inspiring us.
How do you work with companies?
We’re starting a business. 1983ASIA is set up as a design company.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
We spend 4 monthsdesigning a project, because we need to learnand systemize the culture and expectations involved.

Extended Interview with 1983ASIA

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
We’re a design team, YAO from Malaysia and SUSU from China. Different regional origins bring wonderful cultural shock. Both of us are college graduates majoring in visual communication.
What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
We were both brand designers at the very beginning, but we are striving for transboundary and breakthrough and exploring in fashion design and product design.
What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?
Staying persistentis hard work, and“greatness” also comes from “step-by-step”persistence. Never forget your original will.
What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
A good design will lead people to pursue beauty and thus drive the society towards a better future.
How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?
I staycurious about the world and keep reading, making sure I’m still active and enthusiastic aboutcreation.
How do you define design, what is design for you?
Design is bundled with commercial society and closely to art. Designers should be able to possessboth the features and work between sense and sensibility.
What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?
To lead people to pursue beauty and thus to drive the society towards a better future.
How does design help create a better society?
Nowadays, people are most exposed to commodity. Designers, by injecting the combination of culture and design into commodity, could lead people to pursue beauty and to build a better society.
How long does it take you to finalize a design project?
Four months. Because at the beginning, we need to have a complete knowledge about the project, including the field and culture involved as well as the needs of customers.
Which books you read had the most effect on your design?
A designer needs to read a lot to know more about the world and enrich his knowledge. So I think every book has more or less impact on my design. Anyway, reading always does good.
