Although fairly new to the jewellery industry, I’ve developed a passion for creating new and unique pieces. I’ve not found it easy at all but am hopeful that with the right support structures in place, one day I’ll be able to make my dream of being a self employed Jewellery a reality.

I was first introduced to the world of Jewellery and Design whilst I was studying my A-levels. I’ve always been passionate about art and it was this interest that made me seek out different ways I could show my creativity. I began to attend a once a week evening course that would teach me the basic jewellery making skills such as soldering, cutting out metals and how to make a ring. I immediately fell in love with Jewellery and it soon became a big part of my life. I then went on to study Jewellery and metalwork at university, where I was able to fully explore and experiment, developing my own unique style and techniques.

When I start to design a new piece I almost always use my materials to help guide the design process. I use a technique called dry casting in the majority of my works, meaning that every casting I create is completely unique. It is Therese unique, almost natural looking forms that guides my designing process. I’ll spend hours arranging, planning out and experimenting with my material, looking for the perfect balance and position for each piece. I also believe it’s important that my pieces are wearable for everyday use, meaning I carefully consider the comfort of each design to ensure the finished pieces can be easily worn: everyday statement pieces.

Excitement mostly.... I never know exactly how a piece will turn out which makes the whole process really fun and interactive

I’ve always been a keen artist since I was very young, I love to paint and draw. I also grew up in Cumbria, surrounded by naturally beautiful scenes which have helped me to develop my own style of work which is heavily inspired by nature and natural formations.

My dream is to become a independent, self-employed jeweller, creating unique and bespoke pieces for my customers. However, due to funding and other factors this isn’t something that is possible for me at this point in my career. I will continue to create works but for now I am having to put a hold on fully launching my business.

Be really sure this is what you are passionate about and want to do. This isn’t a easy career choice and setting up a business can be fraught with difficulties unless you have a good support structure and plan.

Find something that only you can do, the competition in this sector is very high. Your work needs to stand out from the crowds and by constantly experimenting and inventing new designs and techniques you stand a much better chance of being noticed.

Right now I’m not a full time jeweller as I don’t have the funding or knowledge of how to run and promote a new business.

I don’t tend to follow trends... I like my work to be something different from what everyone else is doing. I believe that if you are passionate about your creations then this will filter through to consumers and your work will be recognised for its true value.

For me it all about the finish and fit I’d a product. Almost all my product are one-off pieces so the fit of each piece is crucial.

Although I think most designers would say that a design is never fully finished I believe what makes a great design is the designers ability to take a step back and decide at what point enough had been done.

My latest project that I’m especially proud of is of a 7 part necklace made up of unique castings that are linked together so that when worn, the piece moulds to the individual wearer.

One designer I’ve always admired and taken inspiration from is ornella iannuzzi
