Interview with Idan Herbet

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I did not know the design field. At the age of 24 after a big trip to South America, I decided that I wanted to study, but not at any cost, if I did not find the field that really drives me from the inside - from the heart - I wouldn't do it .I started digging through the Internet and asking people. Until one day I was exposed to industrial design. As I continued to read and deepen, I had a realization that made such a noise that I could not ignore it. Since then it continues to rustle.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Herbet Studio is a design studio that I set up in my first year of studies at the age of 26. In school, we are challenged with exercises and we scratch our heads hard to get results. My approach from the beginning is to "go all in". I go in with all my might. If I do something, it's not just for the studies, or to check mark it. it's something I spend time and thought on, and I have no doubt I want to promote it. That's why this studio was built even before I was a designer
What is "design" for you?
Design for me is a way of life, "a designed life" I call it. We choose how and why live this life. Design is basically my way of communicating / expressing myself.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
R & D design through research. Innovation is the thing that leads me and always sits in my head, I am not interested in getting to something that I know how it will end.Which requires a lot of confidence and faith. "Go after the light, it will light the way for you"
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Letherman. A small product that is so versatile and efficient. It amazes me how much thinking goes into something so small.its appearance is reliable and strong, and there is no doubt that it does what it should very well. Every little detail is anchored in great thought and intelligent solutions. Definitely an inspiration...
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Interactive drum stabilizer. A product the size of 3X3 meters. With a stage, drums, lighting, cold fire, smoke machine and electric drums.Twelve professionals are involved in this project. Together, each one brought his best and we have created an amazing stabilizer that responds to the audience, to music, to percussion and to the environment.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
"When the hands think" There is something magical about letting the hands work, feeling the material, stretching its boundaries and through that, understanding how you can move forward. Every crack opens a world to you. And the more you dig in, the more you discover.
When do you feel the most creative?
To devote yourself, to be present and creative in the design process you must be 100 percent there. And I manage to reach my 100 percent only if I have already made time to be in a place and for things that do me good, whether it's a surfing session, training, time with the spouse or friends .After filling my soul, I feel that creativity is coming in.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I always put the person in front of me - the user. To whom this product is intended. I try to get into his head and connect to the feelings he experiences with his initial encounter with the product, while he is using it, and what will make him use it again.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Joy, sadness, frustration, happiness, security, love and a host of emotions. The design process is like a good shake. You throw all your emotions in, they mix - collide with each other, and when you know how to control and dose them, you get an amazing shake!
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Like a proud father, or a mother after birth, a great satisfaction... Emotion comes mainly when you see people affected by it.
What makes a design successful?
A design you look at and you say - "It really can do what it's supposed to do"One that makes you stop for a moment, think, and appreciate what is being done.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
An authentic design, one that does not strain or pretend to be something that it's not.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Be honest. Do not give up on yourself, the client, the material, nor the person who meets with your creation. Do not underestimate the person in front of you. If you were alert enough to spot any problem yourself, you can be sure that the one in front of you will also feel it!
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
15 .We are the future. As we dig deeper, spread our knowledge and desire to shape a future. That's where we will go. In my opinion, due to the multiplicity, consumer culture, the rise of technology and our capabilities - the future will be filled with many things that aren't really necessary.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Jaffa Port Tel Aviv, during Passover. I introduced a bicycle I designed and sold a number of products to by-passers. My next exhibition is in Mood, Milan under the A 'award design competition. I've already received an invitation.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Life is the greatest inspiration. Inspiration finds us. From the moment we get up, through the people and the nature we encounter, to our mind.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
The main part of my design stems from thorough research, and I believe that in order to get to innovations, you have to go through unfamiliar paths. The deeper you go, the more you discover. Leave your comfort zone and do not compromise with the first find.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Man is an image of his homeland. Israel is a small country with a great consciousness. We got our freedom and our country with determined faith and cooperation. We did not give up and knew how to stand up for ourselves. I feel it in my own way as a human being.
How do you work with companies?
I go to companies whose work intrigues me or companies come to me after they have met my work and have connected with it. I accompany the company through an idea they want to implement and they see me as the person who will make it happen in the best way because I choose the projects I believe in, the product, the person / company I work with / their approach and the willingness not to compromise and give up when difficulties arise on the way - until we get to where we were aiming at.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Behind each designer stands a person. Meet the person. If you do not connect with him on a human level you will not connect to his design or, certainly, you will not enjoy the road together.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Of course, first of all and before everything else, a design process begins with dedication. It is important for me to choose and start projects that I believe in their idea and those that intrigue me, and I know that I am going to give everything I've got and devote myself to the path that leads to the goal. I'm always looking for the innovation, the unfamiliar, the esoteric, the kind they have not seen before. I believe that in order to reach such a product, one has to go through a lot. A path that includes thorough exploration, entry into unfamiliar paths, and exhausting every step of the way. The best things are the unexpected. Where the emotion thrills and leads you. Listen to it.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
House Design is the space where a person is staying. The details that are there are what will make his home experience for better or for worse. In my opinion, the most significant items in your home are not ones that you can't live without - those that will upgrade your experience in your home, such as an inspiring picture, a pleasant lamp, an authentic phonograph, a sophisticated sculpture and an unusual wall.
Can you describe a day in your life?
A good day for me is a day when I change at least 3 costumes and I'll explain. The night before I always prepare the car and bag in advance for the whole day.Waking up at 5:30am, pushing in a banana and a glass of water with lemon, at 6 I am already with the surfing suit (first outfit) at sea for a surf session at sunrise. 9 In the morning I go into the studio, wear work clothes (second outfit) and start working. Towards the evening, I wear clothes for going out and dedicate time for friends / family and my partner. This is an ideal day for me. Sports, work. Family / Friends. And so on.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
First of all, I myself am a young designer but I would love to share the pearls that at least for me, have helped me get up in the morning, push forward, and create a healthier, more intriguing, full and better life. Enabling me to design accordingly.Listen to your inner voices, people around you have a lot to say, they usually look at themselves and criticize you. You can listen to others but listen to yourself! Stop to think and feel what honestly makes you feel good and what doesn'tKeep things and people who do you good! And move away from what does not do you good.Good is measured by evil, the highest by the lowest and the most beautiful by the ugly. Know and acknowledge the things that you do not like.Whatever you touch, do it in the best way possible. You're already there, so why not do it in the best way! Do not say when I'll have time I'll do, since you might never have time! Just get to doing! If you think you are too small to change something... Try to sleep with a mosquito in the room.Ask, everything, ask anything. Everything you encountered and did not understand. Ask! Or research and examine yourselves. If I am not for myself, who is?! The more you enrich your toolbox, the better you can express yourself without being dependent on others.Last and most important thing! Enjoy the way! And if the road does not appeal to you, pave it.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
100 percent positive, but not because there is a specific reason or missing bad things, I just choose to shed a light on the positive side.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Listen and be alert to findings on the way. Not jump to the first thing that comes to my mind. Before I go through a step and advance to the next one in the process, I make sure that I have exhausted it as much as possible or that it is a dead end and I can continue onward.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Curiosity, faith and security. Without each of these variables, in my eyes, it does not work.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
The most important tools are the head and the arms. A computer is a world and with it, the internet, web design software such as SolidWorks, Studio Max, Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Primer Decoration and more. The more self-sufficient you are in your abilities. The more you can express yourself in the best way and not rely on others
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Available management is an important issue. I love managing my time with specific tasks for that day but also leaving a window of time for the unpredictable since I'm actually counting on the unexpected.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
There's no end to it, it usually ends on deadline, and if there's enough passion and time to get back to it, then that happens too.
What was your most important job experience?
Every step of the way is a milestone. I try to choose and take the job to places that challenge me so that in everything that I deal with I'll be enriching my knowledge and abilities. If I put my finger on it - an important project I learned a lot from was one in which I've challenged myself too much and, in the end, did not achieve the result I expected. Time is part of the brief and it is also a material that you need to consider.
Who are some of your clients?
Most of my customers are ambitious and are looking for great challenges. And that's why I'm with them. Those who dream big.For example, there are 2 who still work with me:Chocavi & klien - Lighting Architects - Together we design and create a colorful and innovative world. Multi-disciplinary artist zvika horesh - Together we raised a series of colorful sculptures in sizes of 3 meters or so, which take over tourist areas, luxury hotels, lobbies and more.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
One I have not yet done before. Because it requires me to be most creative and bring my best.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Build a name and a resume for my studio, grow and specialize. Grow together with employees who have become a family and together attack the next challenge.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
It depends on the project and on the client. I have experience working in projects that combined 12 different professionals. 5 designers on the same project. 2 people and also alone. It depends very much.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Of course. Herbet is a portable gas stove that I designed and because of it, I am here. I slept and got up with it in the morning and I still do it until it gets to where it should be in my opinion. The next step for me is to get relevant clients and companies that will appreciate the work and want to buy it. I use it every day. It makes me pause in the middle of the day, appreciate the moment and cook myself a good treat. Whether it's a small coffee after a surfing session, at the end of a day's work, or an outdoor meeting.
How can people contact you?
Today it is easy to find each other. The question is how much you want to get to him. My name is Idan Herbet Mail - HYPERLINK "mailto: idanherbet@gmail.com" idanherbet@gmail.comPhone - +972526348948Or you could just knock on my door at home; Sethunit 6, Ness Ziona Israel.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Yes, I would love to convey a message and especially say to those who read it and not necessarily to designers - that design is how we choose to look at it. We shape our feelings, our relationships, our family, the environment ... And more …! Whether it's through what we say, do, eat or how we dress. The world is a design of nature and man. It's all in our hands. Do not compromise.

Designer of the Day Interview with Idan Herbet

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I got started with designing in 2016 in the first year of my undergraduate degree in industrial design at Hit - Holon Institute of Technology, Israel. When I chose my studies, I realized that this was my future profession and there were no deviations to the left or the right. When I felt this insight, I began to look at every step of the way as a tool for the toolbox that I am accumulating with me. Which helped me relate to the profession, to myself, and to work very seriously. When you take yourself seriously, I believe that is how you will be treated. As a result, I began to establish contacts and job offers in the field during the first year of studies. Since then I have been working as an industrial designer at Kochavi & Klein - a lighting architecture company. While simultaneously collaborating with multi-disciplinary artist Zvika Hrepesh. Together we challenge ourselves and plan an innovative, happy and kicking world.
How did you become a designer?
I believe that my childhood has a great influence on me as a designer today. I grew up in a home that breathes design, with this mother that every detail must be in its place, in the right composition and aesthetic to a high degree. My father is a very pedantic and punctual man, he has golden hands and he is not afraid of hard work. I completed my military service as an officer and company commander of soldiers and other officers. There I was struck by the fact that we control the world we live in - if it is in our actions to motivate ourselves, to move the environment, and indeed through our actions, to shape the world we live in. It was that attitude that fascinated me to study design. Design for a good life, challenging, beautiful, intriguing, pleasant and full of emotions!
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
First and foremost is to choose a project to which I connect, so I succeed in creating the motivation through the curiosity that pushes me forward. Before I jump and burrow in, I stop and understand the essence of the project, what the story is and what aspects it touches. Another thing that motivates me at the beginning of projects is to start at a point whose end is unknown. I am a great believer in the results of the process, in-depth research, entry into unfamiliar paths, and exiting the comfort zone are the things that lead you to fascinating innovations and discoveries! "When the hands think," this is another key tool in me that proves itself every time anew. I believe that what you do not know you can only discover after really touching it.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
In a good design process, as far as I am concerned, you meet with a spectrum of feelings. Joy, adrenaline, security, excitement, confusion, frustration, hunger. And so on. I believe that a project where everything was too easy is not a really good project. I try to start each project with faith and confidence that helps me push forward and not be afraid to walk even in the dark. The most exciting things for me are the unexpected surprises along the way. Those who catch you at an unexpected moment and are the key to discovery and innovation. There is nothing more satisfying then seeing what you've worked on grow and how people and the environment are affected by it.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
The main thing that reshaped me was the courage to stop everything and go out into the big world and ask a lot of questions, who am I? What do I want in life, what does me good and what does not? It started with my departure for the great trip - half a year in South and Central America. Where I really dealt with myself in the most extreme situations and a lot of emotions I had not met before. The freedom to choose and do what I feel is comfortable and really good, to give myself a platform and to deal with new situations every day anew. On that trip, I was exposed to a very significant field in my current life. wave surfing. I meet surfing aspects in my daily life and as a designer in particular. Everyone wants to surf, but it's not easy. Perseverance, determination, exploration, failures, frozen water, burning sun, rubbing, beating, swallowing water, competition, etc. are things that, like life and as a designer, you must deal with to be a good surfer/designer.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
The plan is to continue to pursue curiosity, challenge myself, and give my best in every field I encounter. What motivates me from project to project is the human domain, the end user. In every project I try to get into the mind of the user and shape his emotions through products / objects, which feelings arise when he encounters the product for the first time using it? and what memory it leaves him with? My dream is to grow up with my studio, to put together the family with whom we can deal with every project in an excellent way and to make dreams come true for our customers, for us, and to create such dreams that nobody dreamed of yet. Today I'm working on a series of characters that I hope all of you will know. A colorful character, joyous, optimistic and inspiring. One that will leave a sweet memory and a big smile.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I myself am a young designer, but I will be happy to share the things that motivate me and push me forward to fight and fulfill my dreams. Listen to your inner self! If you feel that you need freedom, to spend time with family, friends, fitness or any striped emotion... Invest in it, this is what will motivate you and you will be able to deal with design with a quiet mind and security. If you think you are too small to change anything, try to fall asleep when there is a mosquito in the room. Ask, research, and get help from people along the way. With anything you encounter do your best. You are already there. Make the most of it!
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Access things from your feelings. Be honest with the environment and with yourself. If you were alert enough to notice a problem, whatever it is, you can be certain others feel it too. Do not underestimate the people around you. Inductance is everywhere. Be alert and take advantage of opportunities. Do not say when I'll have the time, I'll do it, because you will not find the time. Just make time to do it! The best time to start is today! Trust yourself and appreciate your work, do not wait for someone to motivate or push you, you are the greatest creators of yourselves. Good is measured by evil, beautiful by the ugly, high by the low, etc... Appreciate the evil and know what is good because of it. Shout your dreams. Someone will hear and help you realize them.
What is your day to day look like?
Before every new day I write down specific tasks for the day after. I try to promote a number of things at the same time even if it means investing at least 20 minutes each day in them, it helps me keep things in mind, think about them, sharpen them and keep them alive. There is always something to do, every day I ask myself where can I promote my business, talk about my endeavor and share it with the environment that contributes to my thinking aloud and connect people to my endeavors. Design is a world full of inspiration. A daily review of design blogs, visiting exhibitions, tracking design news and more encourages creativity even in the subconscious mind.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I subscribe to newsletters in all the design news that intrigue me. Relevant updates come to me automatically. Every idea that comes to mind, an object that inspires me or a thought I try to record or save a picture of, occasionally browsing these things motivates me to create and access the design I connect with.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
You feel good design from the inside. It stimulates emotions in you and secretes hormones in the body, it is very easy to recognize. A good design is one you look at and you believe that it really does what it is supposed to do, does not try too hard or pretends to be something it is not, one that does its work in the simplest and correct way according to the technology and material it is made of. To avoid bad design, you have to ask yourself is this the most correct way to perform this action? If you felt that you were sweating too much, and trying very hard to make it happen, it was probably not the right direction.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
It is difficult to say that a design that is finished or perfect, especially in the era in which we live, when every day there are new developments and advancement in technology at a record pace. There is only one way ,in my opinion, to get to the closest point possible to a ready design, and that is to examine all the options available to do it closely, and only after you have tested and experienced it you can measure and evaluate what is good and what is not. The end of a project is usually on its deadline. And if there isn't one, it's always possible and best to keep it on a low flame and to advance and upgrade it when possible. The success of a project for me is the feedback from the environment. If the user is satisfied and enjoyed its use, the target has been achieved.
What is your biggest design work?
My Portable gas stove is the product I'm most proud of right now. It has great significance in my life and is one of my milestones as a designer. I breathed and lived this project for 3 consecutive months, got up and went to sleep with it every day. This product is the result of an in-depth research and an important impact for me as a designer on the ability to explore, follow emotion and curiosity, persevere and reach innovative results that resulted from many challenges that required a lot of creativity. The desire for this product stemmed from a technology that intrigued me and with it I wanted to design an innovative product with features and capabilities that were not seen before. There is something magical about the success of a project which at the beginning of the road was just a fiction idea.
Who is your favourite designer?
There are plenty of inspiring designers out there. And indeed there are some that I follow closely such as: Nendo, James Dyson, Kaws Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, Philippe Starck. The common denominator of all of them is the ability to harness people, dream big, pave new paths, challenge reality and undermine everything we have known to this day. I greatly appreciate their way and follow it closely.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
My lifestyle is based on design. Design for me is my way of expressing myself as an artist and contributing to society through a good and thoughtful design. Our life is one big inspiration. Design goes with me everywhere and I give thanks for that. Nature, industry, spirituality, music, religion, attitude, etc. are anchors in our world and each one can be a platform for a design concept. Since I've been designing, my eyes automatically go to, and place an emphasis on the smallest details. It's stronger than me, the smallest thing that disturbs me. Will make me not rest until I make it exist in the best possible way
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Working in a team is always nice, allowing you to think together, hear and sharpen each other and achieve better results. Over time I learned to release and give the stage to other ideas, which promoted me as a person and a designer in particular. There is great importance to cooperation and achievement within this. I know how to give the stage, complement and reward accordingly - it motivates, attracts the other side to achievements, and to joint success. As a designer my responsibility is to provide an honest and reliable response. Listen to the material and the person and provide him with the best for him.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
As designers we have a great influence on man and humanity. In every project I try to emphasize the recycling and the depletion of the materials. Design contributes to society, unifies, and protects human dignity. The more designers work that way, the better the awareness will become, and talking about it is very important. We control the today and tomorrow of our world.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
Winning a design award is primarily a boost for me. It inspires me to continue to create and advance, and to push further. It is very nice to receive an appreciation of this magnitude, especially when you've worked hard and there is a platform that appreciates it and gives you the stage. I believe this is a door opening to my design career. A pat on the back is nice but it does not mean anything, the goal is to continue to create, invent and beat yourself. Design competitions of this kind are very important. This creates healthy competition and sets a bar to the design field and for designers in particular. Being a design award winner puts it in another league and it only comes to those who aim for there. I am very aware of this and appreciate every moment.

Extended Interview with Idan Herbet

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I've learned design and emphasis on the small details from home. My mother needs everything to be precise, clean and tidy, she does not compromise on it. My father is an independent person and his knowledge is tremendous. He has golden hands and he is not afraid of hard work.
How did you become a designer?
At the age of 20 or so I got the insight that we are the creators of ourselves and the environment. When I realized that, I thought how I could "mold" my life and that of others and control our emotions through design.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I chose. At some point in my life I chose to choose everything in my life. I do not run my life to please others or do things I can't wait to finish with. I get up and go to sleep design every day and I give thanks for that.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I design emotions, using objects that shape people's feelings.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
If you think you are too small to change something, try sleeping with a mosquito in the room.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Faith, security and curiosity. If you do not have one of these 3 variables you are not there in my opinion
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
A good design is one that you look at and you believe it is doing what it is supposed to do. One that you immediately understand and that awakes your emotions.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Design is everywhere, it is when you get up to brush your teeth and it is also there when you go to bed and sleep. Through design, we live our lives, we have the right to design them.
What is your day to day look like?
What exactly will it be? I do not have an answer . But it will be unexpected, touching on purpose, and directly aimed at essence. There are many people I would like to design for them, but instead of names I can say that I would be happy to design to anyone who belive in my work, who believes in me - in the person I am, and will put their faith in me because he can be sure that I will do my best to achieve the most surprising result, and best of all with my design and together to hit the goal. Because it's not about what it will be, it's about the way, the discoveries are on the way. I am a journeyman. The end product for me is the way. And my gift is that people can enjoy their journey with my insights through my designs that allow them just enjoy the journey of life.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
One that will touch as many people as possible at their most sensitive points. One that through one object - they will go through a whole experience that will make them look inside and understand everything - what is important and what is not.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
If it is too easy you are not in the right direction. There is a particular way of designing in which you see the trail but it is full of spikes. wear a shield and gallop forward. The really good things lie beyond what's hidden.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Ron arad, zhah hadid , Jonathan Ive , Marc Newson , Philippe Starck , Lloyd Groff Copeman , Dieter Rams It's not necessarily about a specific design... But rather about an inspiring way. The ability to strive in a big way, to explore in depth, to walk with confidence and to make big things happen.
What is your biggest design work?
I am very attached to the designs that "scream" their design process There are designs that can see through them the process, the thought, and the way that led to this design. The design process is very sensitive and accurate, if you know how to be sensitive, curious, courageous and ambitious. Probably your design will talk that way too. For example, zhah hadid, James Dyson, Marc Newson and many more.
Who is your favourite designer?
I developed a mold-making technique to create a unique concrete sink. I developed a technique that allowed me to reach a unique shape with a form the follows function that sape allows the water drops to slip into the scoring hole With the same technique I was able to create a uniform texture which characterizes a sink and its aqueous environment.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
First of all, to improve as a human being. Stop everything and look inside. Who am I? Knowing what I'm good at and what I'm not. How do I relate to others and how others relate to me and why? To ask endless questions. Love yourself and give thanks for good and evil. Once you are able to be balanced with yourself, your design will be balanced too.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I was a professional surfer. From morning to evening. But I must have been designing surfboards or wave pools. So, it's probably stronger than me.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
