Interview with Faldo Andreo

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I do have passion in art since 3 years old. I remember that I got a set of color pencil on my birthday and start drawing ever since but I didn't know where to go. Then I spent my teenage life by learning Interior Design and Architecture from books and discovered my true passion since then.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Started as a small Interior Design firm in 2010, we have created stunning visuals and interior works which created new design trends in the city. As we always a step ahead and brings a forward-thinking design in all our works, we have succeeded in turning ideas into reality as we open our first Architectural Design Services in 2012. Starting in 2016, Fal Andreo & Design Associates (formerly Faldo Design Company) is taking the team to a new level and trusted by many local Property Development as a design consultant from Budget Residential Projects, Offices, Shop Houses to Unbelievable Resorts that will be witnessed by world in upcoming years.
What is "design" for you?
There is nothing defined as a good design. A well-designed is when you can fulfill your client's demand and needs.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I do like the works from Zaha Hadid and Foster & Partners company. Their works really inspire me and trigger me to create something better everyday. Never stop learning new things.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
A beverage bar in a restaurant. At the same time I also did for a Spa and health club.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I do like mixing existing technology and materials into something new, so it can be built in actual project without excess budget and creating something new at the same time.
When do you feel the most creative?
When there are limited restrictions on my project and the client trusted me for a hundred percent.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
User experience. All design aspects are ended to the user itself. I'm aiming to the right goal during designing so that I could achieve good customer's satisfaction.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Nothing particular. A designer is the same as an actor on stage. I need to be the user to know exactly what they want and what they need.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I don't think that there is good or bad design. It is more right or wrong design. For example, we do have space planning and human dimension standards. When it is applied correctly and added with creative solutions, then it is the right design for the user (as a solution).
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
We need to solve the problems in creative ways. Designer need to come up with solutions.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is the same as technology. It is always evolving by the time. As there are more problems to solve, then there are more design fields.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
As a design consultant (mostly for property developers), I am more into events than exhibition, such as; product launch, product knowledge and sales event. If I remember correctly, my last art exhibition was SIGGRAPH Gallery in 2011 Vancouver and Interior Expo at LCI Event Indonesia. I do really want my works to be exhibited internationally in the future, hopefully by MOOD - A Design Award.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I do go to product launch (property developers) frequently to see and to learn the actual design trends that sells good to local and international market. I am also learning new things from social medias and internet to feed my creativity.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I could not say that I have made a choice of one particular design style, because I have to adjust myself with certain condition like market and client's demand. But, I do like to get in-depth with Post-modernism as it has no boundaries of using new technology or form to create.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I am living in Surabaya, Indonesia. I could say that my country affects me a lot in my design as it is the user and market for my product. The pros during designing as a result of living in my country is that there are so much to explore, lot of potential opportunities, especially the land and nature as my landing-base in architecture. But the limitation in technology and budget could limit my creativity in most cases.
How do you work with companies?
I am working as a design consultant for property developers, both internally and externally.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Creativity and talent is hardly to read from designer background nor by the paper. Sometimes we need to feel the connections and build a good synchronization in team to have an excellent team work. With the same vision.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Finding client's demand, appointing project types, make design decisions, learning existing data, planning a paper plan, organizing realistic plan, deliver presentation and last built the project (take action).
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Kitchen, Bathroom, The building itself, Lighting or Ceiling and Desk.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I spend mostly behind my desk to design with my computer and meeting with clients at coffee shops or at their/my office.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Never give up even everyone fails you. Because there is a day that you will shine like a pearl, but you never knew when is it. Always keep trying, learning and believing.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Appreciation is both positive and negative in designer life. How do designer face it could defines and brings differently to him or her. So, designer could not give up when their art is not appreciated by a group of people even it is so hard to take. On another side, designer need to stay humble, hunger for more, hunger for creativity, hunger in learning new things even they already got a lot of appreciations from public.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Honest and straight to the point even it is hard to take by the client/ market. Designer need to speak truthfully in what is right and wrong in design without taking personal opinion and emotion. Especially as a consultant in architecture and interior.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
I am using multiple software on doing a single project to achieve most accurate design plan and get a photo-realistic renders and video. I do need an equivalent PC to run the software and it doesn't mean have to be the expensive one.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Smart work and dedication. Yes I need the right knowledge and the right hardware to support me, but the most important thing is dedication.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Depends on how big or complicated it is. Client, revision, site conflict and permit also takes a huge part in design duration.
What was your most important job experience?
All job experiences are equally important for me that leads me as I am today, as parts of my journey.
Who are some of your clients?
A Mayor Candidate, Property Developers, friends and regular clients.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Resort Design. I do like travelling and I want to design well-designed place to stay which is not just comfortable but also gives a good memory (user experience).
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I would like to be a design consultant for more property developers, internationally, especially for resort projects and hotels.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Mostly myself, but I do help the in-house team of the property developers and giving advises to have more efficient design process.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
As I am working with property developers, I could not explicitly talk to public before the launch date. But, discussion between designers and businesses might do, as to achieve better result from their feedback.
How can people contact you?
by mail at faldodesigncompany@gmail.com, web contact, instagram, facebook, whatsapp, LINE, phone or any other contacts that may be suited well for you. I am gladly to respond as soon as possible.

How did you become a designer?
Art is my passion. Architecture is everywhere. Wherever I am, I'm always observing Interior Spaces and Architecture on how does it perform in real life and how to make it better. I am quite perfectionist and critical in creating better living space, and that's what makes me a designer.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
The most important aspect in designing is the end-user itself, as everything is created to fix the flaws and fulfill the client's demand. This is the top priority to achieve high satisfaction and design-accuracy. Everything else are following. If I could understand my client(s) and their problem(s), then I know exactly what tools and steps do I have to take.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Nothing particular. Art is an express of emotion(s), while architecture is something that you created for the user. So, how do I control my emotions when designing is more important than expressing my free-will of emotion.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
It's quite a long journey. In short, I am a fast learner, especially in learning new technology that could help me in achieving my dream. As I would like to master all design software, I'm end up becoming an instructor and writing book about BIM Software. Then the journey leads me to get involved in diversified design industries, but everything are round-up to Architecture.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I am planning to create a design hub. A firm that involves internally for several company and bridging their design difficulties. Not only limited for architecture, but a consultant that could help any difficulties in starting and/ or maintaining planning development of property developer companies.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Do not let fame and the size of a design firm be your standard measurement of a success. Be yourself.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Do not let someone who could not value a design let you down. They may not understand it yet, but in fact, they are already using the benefits of design in their daily life.
What is your day to day look like?
I do not keep myself in specific routine as I would like to improve myself everyday. Daily routines could make someone spend their life in non-improving years, but I am adopting priority professionalism which work on something that requires prior action and work over-time as needed.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Going online. As space and distance are limited, online publications/ media are covering almost everything that happening now, including design trends. I am always keeping up with the latest international design trends from online news as local trends are something that I could face directly, everyday.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
As what I mentioned earlier, client's demand is the top priority to follow in achieving work-satisfaction. There is nothing defines as a good design, a well-designed is when I could fulfill my client's demand. Art is an abstract objectives that may differ in point of view, but demand is an absolute objective that could be won by solving their problems.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
A design is ready when it is tested by feasibility studies and proven by the client (or end-user for property developer). For an architecture, it is complete when it is done and used by the user.
What is your biggest design work?
It is hard for me to name a specific work as my biggest design work, because I am always giving my all in all design projects and all of them have a special part in my heart. In short, just like a parent who treat their children. I do treat them equally, giving my best and I do proud of all my projects.
Who is your favourite designer?
Zaha Hadid and Foster & Partners company. They are all great designers and inspires designers worldwide, including me. I do like them the most as their work is always something "out-of-this-world", futuristic and a great example of post-modernism architecture.

As I am living in Indonesia, a rich in culture and nature, architecture becomes a part that needs to express its natural beauty while providing solutions for the user. There are also wide opportunities in development, especially architecture. Resorts and Low-cost Residential are also become a prime objective of several developers which designer need to give the best in it.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I do have trusted business partners such as notable contractors, civil engineers and designers. They are all trusted by experiences as I am working with them for years. They are also have a good reputable portfolios. Honestly, I am quite difficult to trust a project with new people as it carries my client's trust. In a specific case, I do work alone for a design project that need incremental attention.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Me as a designer is responsible to create better living for humanity. It is not by chance or an option to choose, but a designer is existed to fix the flaws and solve the problem with creative solutions.
