Interview with Atsuko Tateno

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Yes, I have. I always have been attracted by beautiful things, such as the moonlight, sundown, and fresh green field since I was a little child. I was also very interested in a job which requires technique, and taste. I watched a movie about a female photographer when I was 6. And I was quite sure I dreamed of being a photographer in the future.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I used to be a web designer. Currently I do not work, and I want to be a photographer now. But I am always shooting some photos, and looking for opportunities.
What is "design" for you?
It is the tool to show the others the content with minimal words, and tremendous outlook.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Photography project which requires photo retouching to add some flavor to the work.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Isolating the subject from background to replace the plain background.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I consider the bad opinion first. I love my work and that is why I show them on public. I would like to know why the other people has different opinion.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I think I have to bring happiness , sadness, or any other emotion as a message to the people when they see my works. Otherwise my work is just for myself, and it affects only me.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
AI technology is developed so fast. But I think creating and designing is still the work for people.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Japan. I always am inspired by the environment, and the history of my country. Pros is I love my country, and foods in Japan are great. Cons is I would like to explore the world to get inspired more.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I do not have to take my daughter to the photo studio. That is a good thing. Bad thing is my eyes get exhausted.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Design is not just for me but most importantly it is for the other people.
Who are some of your clients?
I am not allowed to say the clients name on public. But they were the one of the biggest drink manufacture and ad agency, in Japan.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Photography project which requires the photo manipulation. Because I feel I am drawing when I retouch the photos.
