Interview with GEORGIANA GHIT

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I like to say that my design is a minimalist way answer for the world's problems. I become an designer because I consider that this profession will fulfill my desire to create good products for people need. In our daily routine we interact with objects that improve our life or confuse it. That's why less means more. And less means functional simplicity.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am a young designer on my begining career and I like to gain my experiences from collaborations and experiments. I have a personal brand named GGDesign, but I'm working as a freelancer and I do wanna have my personal studio in the near future. I create sustainable concepts, and lately I'm experimenting with new materials to find better green solutions.
What is "design" for you?
Design represents to me a better and constructive world who pleads for more sustainable times. Change the purpose, mix the feelings, find the right answers for a better experience with the product.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Lighting Design Objects with purpose; Functional design with less touch; Environmental experiments; Social Design Impacts; Graphic Design Story contexts; Creating brand new ideas; Finding natural problems and propose insights; Sustainable products or conceptual ideas for a cause;
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My most favorite design is Fragrance Lamp serie, because it has the essential ingredient, one of my favorite and liked by many people because of his potential in aromatherapy and medicine. I used the lavender flower seeds because I think it is a good ally to have in your house. It helps you in different ways. Also it is a ecological way for lighting and has perfume.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first thing I design for a company was a proposal concept called: Delta Pendant Lamp, with who I won the Delta Craft competition. The lighting object was inspired by the traditional life of the craftsmen who live in the Danube areas. It's made entirely from adobe material(earth land).
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel good, liberated, creative, I feel I can bring a change through my design.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
The best emotions in the worldwide. Obvious is a great feeling for every designer to know that the product designed is finished and can be produced.
What makes a design successful?
Good insight, simple vision and great functions. Less means more, that's why is so complicated to deliver something successful 100%. But you keep trying to improve it until you feel that it's enough.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Green classification and how functional it is, if indeed it is realized for the user experience or just for another beautiful object However, there is also bad design that is good in its category (If that was the intention).
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I would say that 90%, it's our duty to deliver good environmental product design. We need to change the perspective of the consumers, we need to educate them for for both interests: their live and the environmental status.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The future of the design is almost here. The technological products will raise the expectation of the people from the planet. However we can draw the line and find also respect for the environment and planet. We can make green products based on the technology nowadays.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was at SENSORIA, The exhibition - Design Days tour, in 2 city locations, 2019. My next exhibition will be at Romanian Design Week, in May, 2020.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration many times comes from nature. Also from society problems, from my daily routine and from the people who I work with. For exemple, it is interesting how people react in different situations or places. Body language is very important for the empathy design process.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I use Design thinking methodology for every project. I think this is the best way for me to analize each route and find the best solutions for my concept and for my target. Not sure how to describe the style but it is a minimalist daily routine process.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
For now I live in Romania. Yes, I think my design is affected by the curent location. Not everybody here understand what the product design really means and what this profession does to help the people. That makes a product good?
How do you work with companies?
Usually I work with project or collaborations. Right now, I'm having freelance graphic design works.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
You will figure out who is a good designer for your company only after you have a debate solution with them. Every designer is good for a company and less good for another one. I think it's about the knowledge, accurate work, simplicity in process and understanding the right purpose to create not an expected delivery but a very good unexpected proposal.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Experiments matter most. I work with a timeline stable by me, an estimated time, the idea paths & choosing the right final idea for development. After that, I like to work on the UX process to fulfill better the consumer expectation
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
google assistant; drawing tablet; workspace desk; notebook; pencil; and also my favorite mug coffee
Can you describe a day in your life?
Wake up on music, drinking my favorite coffee with extra milk, enjoying the presents of my lovely birds, making breakfast, prepare for work, going to office, resolving the tasks and check for the deadlines, going to the studio or working from home. But many times, a day in my life can't be described, sometimes I feel that 24 h are not enough to make all the thing you want.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
I am a young designer, but I think I can answer that. Best advice is that you never need to give up on your dreams. Work not hard but smart. Be a good designer and change the world

Weather change the style. People's behavior can change the process. Sometimes is difficult to satisfy everybody's expectation. Sometimes we work hard until we gain the great results. Because you are the designer.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

I like to go on my friends exhibitions, to talk with the artists. Every connection matter. Every context can create another one.Every day creates you.

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I develop my designs myself but I'm looking forward to find a team for the next projects.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

Via email, phone, social media. My website is under construction.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?

The final touch. No, the design can't be complete. There will be always a way to improve my design or other. Every designer probably will answer the same way. There so much energy for making a product that you never know when to stop. But I stop, because I need to follow my way. The decision depends on the product or on what you feel about it. You will know, when it's ready to go. In theory: good function, simple, aesthetic, ecofriendly and strong.
What is your biggest design work?
The next work, every time. I do not believe in one single best product. I believe in multiple good products. But, I am proud of my last one, Fragrance Lamp, because I think will change the idea of what you could have in your home.

I like honesty, so for me this is an important detail when hiring somebody or when I'm working with somebody. My responsibilities: people's needs. Weather change the style. People's behavior can change the process. Sometimes is difficult to satisfy everybody's expectation. Sometimes we work hard until we gain the great results. Sometimes you are wondering if this is the right path for you. But at the end of the day, you are happy, because you can create something good for the planet and people and they know it. Because you are the designer.
