About Cynthia Gómez Ramírez

Graduate in Textile Design, master’s in business administration, she studied fashion marketing, lifestyle trends, sustainable fashion, and textile experimentation at Central Saint Martin’s School She has received recognition as the best designer and is considered one of the 50 successful women in Mexico by the Expansión group and the Universal newspaper. She founded her studio in 1996, in which she designs her homonym brand, which has specialized in knitted textiles for Fashion and Home, her style characterized by the richness of his colors. She has participate within Fashion Week México, Desfila and Días de Moda platforms for more than 10 seasons. Her collections have been exhibited at the Carrillo Gil Art Museum in the “Boutique” exhibition, at the Ex Teresa Arte Actual Museum “Modas Terminales”, at Design Week Mexico at Espacio Ciudad de México Museum She is currently coordinator of the Fashion Design and Sustainable Textiles program at the IBERO University Design Department. She has been a teacher for more than 10 years, teaching classes in strategic design, fashion and textile design and business management.

Interview with Cynthia Gómez Ramírez

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I come from a textile family, I grew up surrounded by textiles and clothing, I always liked fashion, but above all designing to transform the way fashion was made.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are dedicated to making iconic pieces that tell a story in each stitch, thinking about innovation, sustainability and fashion.
What is "design" for you?
Design is having the possibility of creating and transforming the world and the people who inhabit it.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
What I like to design the most is textiles and if it is knitted fabric the better, then transform it into clothing.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
the design I made during the pandemic, which was to visualize the deaths through an algorithm and capture it on a textile.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
I started with commercial collections for department stores in Mexico.
When do you feel the most creative?
Design from the origin which is the fiber, then the textile to finish the piece in a piece of clothing
What makes a design successful?
that the people that was design for feel happy, and into the cloth.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
We have to think about social, economic and environmental factors so that we can truly transform the world through design.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
On the one hand, return to the basics, returning to ancestral techniques, but on the other hand, incorporate technologies that help transform the design.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
it depends on the project, but usually i love to work with knitting and different colours.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Mexico City, my identity as Mexican is fundamental as I am very close to the communities of indigenous peoples, exalting their techniques and processes in my projects.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I start with an exhaustive investigation of trends, inspiration, technology, processes, from there I go through the synthesis to highlight the most important things. Then I start the creative process of sketching and textile experimentation to finish with the production of the piece.
Can you describe a day in your life?
in the morning i go to the gym, then to the university to give some classes, after that to my studio at the evening, and then back home
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
As designers we have the possibility of observing the world in detail, beautifying it and providing solutions to the problems of people, society, country and world.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
it depends on the project it could be a week, a month o more than a month.
What was your most important job experience?
Be teacher and coordinate a undergraduate program of Fashion and Textile Design.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
participate with more projects in exhibitions about sustainability and fashion
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I am working on a solar jacket for migrant farm workers who are exposed to high temperatures.

exercise, teach, design in my studio, meditated and enjoy a delicious dinner.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
researching, travelling, visiting museums, festivals and everything that can give some cultural context.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I live in Mexico City, so popular culture is very important in the idea by idea, as well as the identity of our native peoples from whom I have learned their connection with nature and with natural techniques.
