Interview with GarryVeda design Bureau (c)

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
As you remember, we are a team of 5 so this question should be split among team members. Some of them, like our Art Director Olga Pargevian, are in design from their childhood and then later with special design education at the University, etc. Personally me (Garry Veda) so I have a Master Degree in Design&Construction with a technical focus and was aiming to develop the space-ships, but something went wrong (:)) so I got several years expertise in Cinema Special Effects creation when I participated in visuals creating for domestic and Hollywood films. And so evolutionarily we had met together and now our design Bureau is a family-owned enterprise with superior quality of graphics and professional understanding of both design and marketing.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are the family-owned design Bureau located in Ukraine (Eastern Europe) organized by me (Garry Veda), my cousin Olga Pargevian, and my wife. Our team has more than 12 years of working together fun and we consistently increase our expertise level with a growing demand for our work among Western World countries clients. For now, you can find our design on the supermarket shelves in at least 50 countries worldwide. We love our profession, the process of creation and with every project we begin, we always keep our core vision in mind. Because we have a mission above: to create a one-of-kind piece of art, that will forever, be timeless in design. We believe that a timeless design with superior aesthetics, can not only stand the test of time but also leave a great impact on the world. Our design Bureau focuses on the most challenging field of the design application, we produce the brand and packaging design as we believe the future is rather for those with extra-expertise in the narrow highly sought segment than for others with a wide (de-facto none) range design skills.
What is "design" for you?
Oh... design is the art and technology at the same time. When you see a beautiful final image you can't believe there are tones of coding, algorithms, framework-methods inside implemented by hours of math & drawing efforts being mixed together. Our team implemented the unique technological framework named "AntHill", including in-studio methods & procedures, specialized software & tools also as special sequential stages process, etc. allowing us to handle this complex task of brand/packaging design creation with all these modern World challenges and the growing requirements to visuals quality & fullness. Really we are coding visuals into feelings!
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
We focus on branding (logo) and packaging/label design creation. Of course, we have the expertise in web-design, print-design, industrial design, 3D, etc. But our team favorites are still packaging and logo design creation works.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Really, we love all our designs so this would be unfair to split them. Let's say our favorite design is the one we are working now:) Our team always produces several different projects on parallel threads not to be discouraged by the monotony of projects so this is always fun to switch and to feel a new love on the screen.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
This was a billboard for the vodka brand in 2000. A quite nice realistic scene created in 3ds max, it was new in those days. There was a fun case during the process when bright RGB colors become dull on CMYK printing, so this was a first technology lesson for me when I was trying to explain this color difference to the client who wanted the same shining billboard in life as it was on my screen after Vray-rendering.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Our unique framework platform (named "AntHill") was developed especially to meet the challenges of the modern market worldwide both for fast terms, ultra high quality & easy smooth handling of every nuance of every client task. This includes Adobe platform (Illustrator&Photoshop), 3ds max + Vray, Cinema 4D and dozens of custom sropts&software widely used in Cinema Special Effects creation and designed to automate and simplify the routine procedures and also to link all staff to manage all teammates to work over every newly created artwork version together at the same turnaround with seeing the development progress in real-time while editing the layouts, vectors, raster layers, 3D output, render RAW, etc. like the orchestra is playing a symphony.
When do you feel the most creative?
At night:) We have got a major client from the US so also our working hours are moved forward to match a bit with the possibility to communicate with a voice. So we start working at 12 PM and work till7 PM usually. But the most creative moments are overtime&deadline rodeo with the night behind the window.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
We have the strictly regimented process according to our "AntHill" framework so all the aspects have the appropriate check-points, etc. We focus on a brief task fulfilling with keeping in mind that we are creating a thing that will be found by archeologists in the far-far future, and they should be pleased too, not only the client now.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
A joy. Really... and I hope all our teammates too. You see, the design always carries a feeling. Even the tears:) But the feeling above is always a joy. Design is a joyful process.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
A joyful winning feeling, of course. But I can't stop and continue thinking of what could be improved more and more. And you know, sometimes we sent the updates to the client even after the project finalization. Perfectionism makes us crazy sometimes.
What makes a design successful?
This question is out of human understanding. This is God's Grace and His Gift. People are just conductors. So we could feel after but cannot know in advance.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
What feelings and emotions design evokes. And then on its level of implementation, technical points, etc. But the feeling, like the shot, which makes the design pop among others is the basement. Of course, the design is the working tool so it should function well according to all the brief tasks & points. But it should transfer this shot-feeling, otherwise, it does not work properly.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
We believe that a timeless design with superior aesthetics, can not only stand the test of time but also leave a great impact on the world having the educational goals, now living generations shaping aesthetic taste goals and self-expression joy for those people who love, use and live with products dressed in our designs.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Technology is the roadway to design the future, I guess. The demand for visual quality is growing drastically;humankind is staying on the visual revolution edge with all these Virtual Realities and hi-resolution screens, electronic paper, etc. The role of the drawing is being harder mixed with the role of algorithms, mathematics, coding.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Oh, there was none still. I hope we will continue this good tradition to show our works to the public and to participate in Awards & Competitions...
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Creation is God's Grace. So this is very necessary to keep your soul in the right condition. I think a person of the modern world being the designer or not should read, see, watch, discover all the informative channels with a clean and crystal task: make the civilization a little bit better.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
With every project we begin, we always keep our core vision in mind. Yes, sure we are the business. Yes, sure the client needs are the points to be solved as our work result. Understanding our client's needs is the first step our team takes to turn an idea into a work of art. So the style is to fit the task. Different tasks, different styles, we are the professionals.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
All our team members live in Ukraine now. I don't think the country's cultural heritage makes the tone in our designs. Despite the fact that the Ukrainian language is the one among the most beautiful languages in the world... maybe the art is somehow in Ukrainians this way, don't know... I this that art&culture world is common in the 21st century, so we bring international aesthetics with our design Bureau works.
How do you work with companies?
We developed a convenient project flow to handle the task of outsourcing works. There are the briefing procedures, the possibility for the communications via any messenger system client needs, using English voice& video calls, deposit online security service, etc. Really, Western world companies feel we are rather a next-door than a far-far country contractor.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I think the best way to select a good designer is to request the price for any task from him. Professionals with great expertise will always answer you in detail, showing the successful cases, attaching the briefs and informative materials, etc. The usual designer will answer the price only.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Working according to our own framework allows GarryVeda design Bureau© to manage all teammates to work over every newly created artwork version together at the same turnaround with seeing the development progress in real-time while editing the layouts, vectors, raster layers, 3D output, render RAW, etc. like the orchestra is playing a symphony. We are extremely fast in high-quality visuals production. Usually, we manage to develop 20+ versions for the 1st stage (concept creation phase) so the client sees his "own Pinterest" where his product is performed in different styles and variations. Of course, the central point of the development obviously is the style requested by you via the brief (exactly an imaginary you had grown in the mind) and at the same time, there is a much wider range of great possible solutions presented on every stage than other working methods could propose.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
They are: the orchid flowers, the kettle, the kitchen chandelier, bricks on wall decoration, and the sofa.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I could describe the day in studio life: We meet at 12 PM and have either the working briefing or the brain-storming, depends on the working-table calendar. After we work according to our "AntHill" framework procedures with switching the task in every 2 hours, this allows the designers' minds to be engaged in the most efficient way. Every 2 hours we have a short briefing to lead the process, and several checkpoints, regimented for today. Sure we remember to have fun and laugh and communicate friendly being rather the family than a traditional enterprise. Usually, GarryVeda Bureau works till 7-8 PM but sometimes there are deadlines&overtimes so we live in the studio.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
The main suggestion for a young coming designer is to learn more. It is not enough to have the drawing skill only. You need an enhanced mind with a lot of knowledge there to compete in the modern digital World.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I would say the positives: you have a joy of creation, so-called a heaven-touch; you work in an aesthetic environment with interesting and attractive tasks. Negatives: clients could kill the honey with one feedback, and you still need to make what they want despitetheywantedwrong things.
What skills are most important for a designer?
New world challenges made this list a little bit another way than this had been used to think before. Now the designer needs the same technical skills background (I mean mathematics, algorithms, coding/programming) as he has the drawing skills. There are no pure artists in design now, the digital era is coming.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
To create a good design as to ourteam mind– you need a great mood, full Adobe platform software, 3ds max + Vray, Cinema4D, camera, wacom, pencil, hands:)
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Our special framework is designed to manage the most rational staff involvement for all the tasks to be performed flawlessly and in time. The flexible process allows us to find the best solution for working staff engagement and rational working resource distribution while handling every image by every teammate of the working group. This is what I call the experience + expertise + right implementation methods.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Usual project flow we propose for the packaging/label design: - initial stage (1st stage): we prepare 25+ versions based on our understanding of the task you set. This takes up to 7 working days. - development stage: we and you discuss the direction based on 1st stage raw made. So 1-3 versions will be chosen for 2nd stage development. Here the terms depend on your feedback speed. - finalization stage (or several): last polishing tunings are applied here. - common happiness, with a - lifetime warranty worldwide for the vector files our team proposes for our clients.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
The most frequently asked question is: Could you make a discount/ make the design at a lower price?
What was your most important job experience?
I believe that skills and expertise are growing when you train them. So every bit of work and every even usual task are creating the foundation for your future level. This is important to be attentive to trifles and find new technologies faster. So the main job experience: don't stop working.
Who are some of your clients?
Our clients are Nescafe, Vinamilk, LitezAll, GreenRevolution, ROSHEN, Nothing Water, Vengo, and others, more than a hundred...
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Our team likes to produce a packaging design for food. This is really really fun! There are a lot of product categories in our Bureau's portfolio, but every food-design was a sweety:) Maybe we feel our importance the most when designing a prelude for the meal.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
We would loke to expand our business and create more works next year and make new designs worth awarding again:)
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
We are the family-owned European team of 5 professionals, located in Ukraine (Eastern Europe) organized by me (Garry Veda), my cousin Olga Pargevian, and my wife.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Our team produces 5-8 new packaging designs per month so we always have the project in the beginning stage, the one at the middle stage, others on the finalization, etc. This is not boring and allows one to switch the mind over-channel feeling when needed.
