Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Desde muy temprana edad, me gustaron las artes plásticas. Mi modo de expresión siempre fue el dibujo. Más tarde, influenciado por la ambiente industrial de la empresa familiar dedicada a la fabricación y comercialización de calefacción eléctrica domestica, adquirí bagaje industrial en disciplinas varias como tecnología y materiales del mundo metalmecánico y eléctrico. Los conceptos ingeniería (procesos y materiales) y diseño (concepción innovadora) unidos indefectiblemente al de industrial, formaran el perfil que acompañará toda mi trayectoria profesional.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Después de dirigir equipos creativos por cuenta ajena, co-fundar mi primer estudio con excompañeros de equipo, en 2011 decidí crear, diseñar y dirigir mi propio estudio, manoloDuránDiseño, al cual transmito mi clara filosofía del diseño como recurso estratégico de la empresa. Desde mi estudio se desarrollan servicios globales de diseño; gestión, diseño de producto, gráfico e interiorismo.
What is "design" for you?
Desde mis inicios he entendido el diseño como una actividad estratégica que no se limita al slyling, sino que empieza en el descubrimiento de una oportunidad buscando permanentemente nuevas perspectivas e ideas con las cuales redefinir servicios, productos y experiencias, proporcionando valor e innovación.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Una colección de lámparas, para la firma Luminaria que fue presentada en el Salón Internacional de Iluminación 1991 en Paris.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Tengo predilección por la madera y sus derivados. Es un material vivo, natural, versátil y con una gran gama de acabados y texturas. Y si lo intentas, puedes hacer casi de todo con la madera. Los nuevos materiales, derivados de lo sintético aportan una durabilidad para según qué proyectos y productos.

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
La función, la forma y los materiales, siempre pendiente del proceso productivo y los costes de fabricación.
What makes a design successful?
En el éxito de los proyectos tiene mucho que ver los clientes. Su personalidad, su experiencia y el gran conocimiento que tienen de sus negocios, me aportada la visión necesaria. Los buenos proyectos siempre se desarrollan con empresas con las que tienes un especial feeling, es la colaboración diseñador-empresa la que hace que el proyecto sea especial, cuando esa unión funciona de verdad, se nota en el resultado final.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Si cumplen la misión para la que fueron concebidos. En este punto es muy importante tener un buen breafing.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Los diseñadores debemos ser conscientes de nuestra función cultural. En este momento el tema de la sostenibilidad no es una opción, sino una necesidad. Del resultado de nuestro trabajo, aprenderán las generaciones futuras.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
El diseño esta viviendo un momento dulce, pues la sociedad en general entiende que diseño es futuro. El Design Thinking esta cambiando la forma de diseñar. La industria ya no entiende su desarrollo sin contar con el diseño, en todas y cada una de sus parcelas.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Las ultimas veces que tuve un producto expuesto fue en CEVISAMA 2019 en Valencia, en INTERZUM 2019 en Colonia, en MADERALIA 2024 en Valencia y INTERIHOTEL 2024 en Madrid, espero poder mostrar próximos productos en SICAM 2025 en Podenone, INTERIHOTEL 2025 en Barcelona y HABITAT 2025 en Valencia.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
La inspiración llega de lo cotidiano, un viaje, un libro, una experiencia. “Cuando eres un buen observador, todo el mundo es tu maestro”.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Mis diseños suelen presentar líneas sencillas y sobrias. Me gustan las formas que me transmiten estabilidad, proporción y mínima expresión. Aunque existe un nexo conceptual común, cada proyecto es fruto de unos condicionantes diferentes, lo que provoca que el resultado nunca sea el mismo.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Vivo y trabajo en Valencia, una preciosa ciudad de la costa Mediterránea, donde la amabilidad del clima nos ha hecho ser más hedonistas, y esa comodidad climática también deriva en la forma de diseñar. La ciudad de Valencia y por extensión la Comunitat Valenciana es tierra de creatividad. El trabajo de profesionales del diseño, la arquitectura, interiorismo o la ilustración a lo largo de los últimos cien años demuestra una cultura del diseño que se extiende por todo el territorio. How do you work with companies?
Conocer las potencialidades y debilidades de mis clientes, comunicación con los equipos de Marketing e I+D+i de mis clientes, investigar el mercado, aportar mi bagaje cultural y una metodología de trabajo muy versátil.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
La mayor sugerencia es sin lugar a dudas definir muy claramente el breafing de producto o servicio a desarrollar. Un diseñador industrial es un generalista por concepto, pero yo recomendaría seleccionar a un profesional especializado en la tipología de producto que al cliente le interesa.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
En una primera etapa, realizar un particular estudio de mercado, detectando posibles carencias y analizando las tendencias que se están dando dentro del sector. Generación de ideas, seleccionar las mejores propuestas y darles forma de boceto. Interactuar con el cliente, definir estos bocetos y posteriormente realizar una propuesta que de respuesta a la necesidad que se planteaba y que pueden ser aprobados por el cliente. Colaborar en la ingeniería de producto. Visitar y coordinar los talleres y fábricas donde se desarrollan los prototipos, aprender la técnica que nos aportará conocimiento para futuros proyectos. Para terminar, en la mayoría de los casos, colaborar en la generación de estrategia y documentación para el lanzamiento del nuevo producto.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Comienzo la mañana revisando correos electrónicos y mis tareas pendientes. Así planificamos el trabajo semanal. Después vendrán visitas de clientes y proveedores, revisión de prototipos, gestiones administrativas… Por la tarde es cuando soy más creativo, me gusta trabajar hasta tarde,.. mis mejores diseños aparecieron por la noche.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
“Cuando eres un buen observador, todo el mundo es tu maestro” y “Antes de que suceda, hay que soñarlo”, son dos frases que me encantan. No sólo es cuestión de talento, sino también trabajo y esfuerzo. Tener la aptitud o los dones ayuda, pero si no se acompaña con dedicación y pasión, no sirve para nada. Hay estar siempre con los ojos abiertos y tener curiosidad. Moverse mucho. Es importante también cuidar la relación con los clientes, escucharlos, atender a sus necesidades esto es lo que construye proyectos de colaboración duraderos.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Para mi todo es positivo, ser diseñador no es una opción es simplemente una actitud, una forma de ser y entender la vida.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Sentirte cómodo. La comodidad la consigo con esa pluralidad en los proyectos. No me gusta estancarme en ninguno de los campos o temáticas que abarca nuestra profesión. Creo que esa variedad nos permite ser más productivos, innovadores, y perfeccionistas en cada uno de los ámbitos.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Trabajo con entornos cad y realidad virtual, y en cuanto al equipo yo soy muy de Apple (siempre iMac).
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Cada minuto del día, de una u otra forma, está ligado diseño, por lo que me es difícil subdividir el tiempo en otras tareas que no estén relacionadas con mi trabajo.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Depende de la tipología del proyecto. Muchos de mis proyectos son colecciones completas de mobiliario, desde el inicio pueden durar muchos meses.

Han sido muchos durante mi trayectoria, pero por destacar los últimos proyectos de Glicerio Chaves Hornero, Visohome Group, Visobath, Sudesa, Lamigraf, Mimmetic, Grupo Bono
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Los proyectos de mobiliario son con los que más me identifico, y al mismo tiempo con los de consultoría de los que adquiero conocimiento de tendencias y materiales, para poder implementar en próximos proyectos.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
En cuanto a desarrollo de producto, ahora mismo estoy desarrollando un programa de amueblamiento juvenil, que vera la luz a mediados de 2025. También nuevas colecciones de papel impreso decorativo, en un proyecto totalmente innovador de impresión digital. Por otro lado, con la incorporación al estudio de mi hijo Manuel (Arquitecto), estamos realizando proyectos de interiorismo, que complementan los proyectos de desarrollo de producto.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Mi trabajo es siempre fruto de la colaboración estrecha con los diferentes departamentos de I+D, marketing, producción y comercial de mis clientes. Todos formamos el equipo…

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
After finishing my Baccalaureate studies, I entered the School of Industrial Technical Engineering, where I only finished the first year, because I lacked the creative part.... In 1991 I obtained my bachelor's degree in Applied Arts and Industrial Design. My first job as an employee was at LUMINARIA, a lighting company in Valencia. After leading creative teams for others, co-founding my first studio with former teammates, in 2011 I decided to create, design and run my own studio, manoloDuránDiseño, to which I transmit my clear philosophy of design as a strategic resource of the company. From my studio, global design services are developed; management, product design, graphics and interior design.
How did you become a designer?
From a very early age, I liked the visual arts. My mode of expression was always drawing. Later, influenced by the industrial environment of the family business dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of domestic electric heating, I acquired industrial background in various disciplines such as technology and materials from the metalworking and electrical world. The concepts of engineering (processes and materials) and design (innovative conception) unfailingly linked to the industrial concept, will form the profile that will accompany my entire professional career.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Since my beginnings I have understood design as a strategic activity that is not limited to slyling, but begins with the discovery of an opportunity by constantly looking for new perspectives and ideas with which to redefine services, products and experiences, providing value and innovation.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Without a doubt, the creative phase is the most exciting. Observation, analysis and personal relationships are three fundamental pillars to approach the creative process. Designers must be aware of our cultural function. I have always understood this profession as a service to society. My humble contribution to the world of design could be the diversity of products that I have designed during these 35 years of career, always with the intention that they would be useful and serve to satisfy the real needs of the people who use them, both from an aesthetic, functional or emotional point of view. Future generations will learn from the result of our work.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
My inspiration was undoubtedly my father, who being an industrial engineer at a time when being a designer "did not exist" as such in our country, knew how to understand that this discipline would be able to change the course of products. You don't choose to be a designer. Being a designer is not an option, it is simply an attitude, a way of being and understanding life.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I don't waste time thinking at such a distance, better "Carpe Dien". There is no point in worrying about what will come or what happened. The present is the experience and it is worth living it with all its intensity. Each new project is always a space for reflection regarding the mark we will leave with this piece, how it will be used, who will use it, etc. This is enriching in all its dimension, we are equipping the future!! Perhaps my evolution lies in the fact that every day I am more aware of how difficult it is to design well. As for the project of my dreams, it would be the integral furnishing together with my son Carlos (industrial designer), of a house designed by the architecture studio of my son Manuel (Architect).
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
"When you're a good observer, everyone is your teacher" and "Before it happens, you have to dream it", are two phrases that I love. It is not only a matter of talent, but also work and effort. Having the aptitude or gifts helps, but if it is not accompanied with dedication and passion, it is useless. You have to always be with your eyes open and be curious. Moving around a lot. It is also important to take care of the relationship with customers, listen to them, attend to their needs, this is what builds lasting collaboration projects.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I'm not one to give advice, but I suggest that it's our obligation to have very fluid conversations with our clients. My work is always the result of close collaboration with the different R+D, marketing, production and commercial departments of my clients. We all make up the team... Once again observe, listen and analyze.
What is your day to day look like?
I start my morning by checking emails and my to-dos. This is how we plan the weekly work. Then there will be visits from customers and suppliers, review of prototypes, administrative procedures... In the afternoon is when I'm most creative, I like to work late,.. My best designs appeared at night.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Designs set trends. Trends are created by all groups that evolve in a certain direction without interacting directly. I don't like to follow passing fashions, my designs must have my personal stamp, it is something that identifies me and differentiates me from the rest. Trends are very important, I spend a lot of time analysing them through the web and groups with which we collaborate. Also from the ADCV Association of Designers of the Valencian Community), it keeps us punctually informed to the rest of the collective.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
If they fulfill the mission for which they were conceived. At this point it is very important to have a good breafing. My designs usually have simple and sober lines. I like shapes that convey stability, proportion and minimal expression. Although there is a common conceptual link, each project is the result of different constraints, which means that the result is never the same.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
The success of projects has a lot to do with customers. Their personality, their experience and the great knowledge they have of their businesses, gave me the necessary vision. Good projects are always developed with companies with which you have a special feeling, it is the designer-company collaboration that makes the project special, when that union really works, it shows in the final result. All projects have room for improvement, but this is firmly linked to the time factor. As the years go by and reviewing past works, I always find details to polish, but these help me to evolve current projects.
What is your biggest design work?
My designs are usually complete collections of furnishings, therefore there is no specific piece, because it is its set that gives meaning. For example, a bedroom cannot be understood only with the headboard but is accompanied by its tables... In this sense I could say that the COSMO collection for Glicerio Chaves and within it is the ICON bed, along with the NOA bedside tables which is my most awarded design. Despite the years that have passed, it continues to be a top seller. That shows that it's a good design!
Who is your favourite designer?
I don't have one defined, but to name one of the first ones that I liked would be the Toledo chair by Jorge Pensi,.. I was impressed by the functional solution together with the use of the material (aluminum), in addition to the beauty of its silhouette itself. Without a doubt I would love to have a long conversation with Leonardo da Vinci, I am passionate about his creative capacity in all fields.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I live and work in Valencia, a beautiful city on the Mediterranean coast, where the friendliness of the climate has made us more hedonistic, and that climatic comfort also derives in the way we design. The city of Valencia and by extension the Valencian Community is a land of creativity. The work of design, architecture, interior design and illustration professionals over the last hundred years demonstrates a design culture that extends throughout the territory. All this comes together in Valencia World Design Capital in 2022 and this marks the importance of... In my free time I love nature and there are all the colors, something that is vital for my work. Color is implicit in the nature of matter and of our perception; we ignore it, but it already exists because it is there and responds to our way of perceiving the world with its receptor differences. It is very important to learn to master its properties in order to know how to use it as one of the most important elements in creative design decisions.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I've gone through all the stages of work. I worked as an employee for large companies in the furniture sector, I had my own studio with associates and finally I chose to have my own design studio alone. I think that they were all good, each one at its own time, undoubtedly this last one is the best, although the capacity is more limited, but as a consideration is that the designs are more elaborate, more personal...
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Designers must be aware of our cultural function. I have always understood this profession as a service to society. My humble contribution to the world of design could be the diversity of products that I have designed during these 35 years of career, always with the intention that they would be useful and serve to satisfy the real needs of the people who use them, both from an aesthetic, functional or emotional point of view. Future generations will learn from the result of our work. I have recently collaborated with organizations such as the ADCV promoting and supporting various initiatives to support people and professionals affected by the DANA that devastated the province of Valencia on October 29, 2024.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
Honestly, I haven't won so many awards in my career, but when they come they are welcome, it's a recognition of your effort, a message that tells you that what you're doing isn't bad. I don't feel famous. My ego is resolved by seeing that my designs are available to the public and they buy and enjoy them. The awards are a recognition of a career that undoubtedly projects and makes visible works and people. If the audience has decided that today I am the "Designer of the Day", it must be that I am doing something right...

Para mi no existe diferencia. Si es caso, esto lo juzgara el tiempo a través de sus diseños.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
En el éxito de los proyectos tiene mucho que ver los clientes. Su personalidad, su experiencia y el gran conocimiento que tienen de sus negocios, me aportada la visión necesaria. Los buenos proyectos siempre se desarrollan con empresas con las que tienes un especial feeling, es la colaboración diseñador-empresa la que hace que el proyecto sea especial, cuando esa unión funciona de verdad, se nota en el resultado final.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
El diseño no es un gasto, es una inversión. Ayuda a difundir y desarrollar los valores de una empresa, y también contribuye a su crecimiento. Optimiza recursos, agrega valores, reduce costes y tiempos.
What is your day to day look like?
No tengo predilecciones, disfruto con los retos que mis clientes puedan proponer.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
El amueblamiento integral junto a mi hijo Carlos (diseñador industrial), de una vivienda proyectada por el estudio de arquitectura de mi hijo Manuel (Arquitecto).
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
El orden, creo que con él se consigue todo: el equilibrio del espacio, calidez, simetría, proporción.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Como ya comentaba anteriormente la inspiración es fruto de la observación, en cuanto a “maestros del diseño” pienso que todos en su justa medida lo somos.
What is your biggest design work?
No tengo uno definido, pero por nombrar uno de los primeros que me gusto seria la silla Toledo de Jorge Pensi,.. me impacto la solución funcional unida al uso del material (aluminio), además de la belleza de su silueta en sí misma.
Who is your favourite designer?
Mis diseños normalmente son colecciones completas de amueblamiento, por lo tanto no existe una pieza concreta, pues es su conjunto el que da sentido. Por ejemplo un dormitorio no puede entenderse solo con el cabezal sino va acompañado de sus mesitas… En este sentido podría decir que la colección COSMO para Glicerio Chaves y dentro de ella se encuentra la cama ICON, junto con las mesitas NOA que es mi diseño mas premiado. A pesar de los años trascurridos continua siendo una pieza top ventas. Eso demuestra que es un buen diseño!
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
No sólo es cuestión de talento, sino también trabajo y esfuerzo. Tener la aptitud o los dones ayuda, pero si no se acompaña con dedicación y pasión, no sirve para nada. Hay estar siempre con los ojos abiertos y tener curiosidad. Moverse mucho. Es importante también cuidar la relación con los clientes, escucharlos, atender a sus necesidades esto es lo que construye proyectos de colaboración duraderos.
