About Mobius Lamp
The Mobius ring gives inspiration for the design of Mobius lamps. One lamp strip may have two shadow surfaces (i.e. two-sided surface), the obverse and the reverse, which will satisfy all-round lighting demand. Its special and simple shape contains mysterious mathematical beauty. Therefore, more rhythmic beauty will be brought to home life.
Kejun Li's Mobius Lamp, recipient of the Golden A' Design Award in Lighting Products and Fixtures Design, represents a compelling synthesis of mathematical concept and material craft that elevates functional illumination into the realm of sculptural meditation. The work draws upon the topological phenomenon first described in the nineteenth century, translating the single-sided, single-edged surface into a three-dimensional wooden form that challenges perceptual assumptions about interior and exterior, beginning and ending. Working within traditions of Scandinavian design philosophy that privilege natural materials and organic geometry, Li demonstrates exceptional technical achievement in bending wood veneer into this continuous twisted ribbon while maintaining structural integrity and surface perfection throughout. The choice of walnut veneer introduces warmth and tactile invitation that tempers the intellectual rigor of the geometric premise, creating an object that engages both mind and senses in equal measure. The interior diffuser panel suggests that when illuminated, light emanates from within the infinite loop, transforming the mathematical abstraction into a source of domestic comfort and ambient warmth. The compositional presentation against the neutral gray field invites contemplation of the form in isolation, encouraging viewers to trace the surface with their eyes and discover the moment where outside becomes inside without boundary or interruption. This interplay between conceptual sophistication and material accessibility positions the work within contemporary discourse around design that communicates meaning through form rather than ornament. The lamp invites consideration of how objects of daily use might embody philosophical concepts, asking whether the infinite continuous surface might serve as metaphor for cyclical time, interconnection, or the dissolution of binary categories in favor of unified experience.

- Unique Properties
- The Mobius ring gives inspiration for this lamp design. - Dimensions & Packaging
- Material: Bamboo with heat-bending forming process/3D printed acrylic.
Dimensions:Length:340mm Width:76mm Height:350mm - Tags
- pendant, light, mobius, aesthetic
- Production Technology
- The pendant's shell is made of bamboo, The outer shell of the lamp is formed by using a bamboo material through a heat bending forming process, and the lampshade is made of acrylic material with a built-in LED strip.
- Design Challenge
- The process of exploring this shape is very difficult because we don't want to make it look too superficial and like the Mobius band. Therefore we must find a balance in the shape.
- Project Duration
- The project began in May 2018 in China and finished in November 2019 in Milano, and will be exhibited in Salone Satellite in April 2020.
- Operation Flow
- One lamp strip may have two shadow surfaces (i.e. two-sided surface), the obverse and the reverse, which will satisfy all-round lighting demand.
- Research
- This shape is developed from the Mobius band. It is not easy to show the Mobius elements beautifully. This process took a lot of time to experiment. In the beginning, we drew sketch a lot of shapes to explore and then folding basic shapes with paper, we gradually perfected the shape through 3D models and 3D printing technology. And finally, we made the functional prototype.
- Inspiration
- The Mobius Ring gave the inspiration for this design. The methmetical
model of Mobius ring attracted my attention when I was reading a book, this inspired me to make a rough paper model and try to make an exploratory assumption, How beautiful and timeless would it look if I could make it into a lamp and hang it in my house. - Image Credits
