About Maoyuan Jingxi Show Flat

Maoyuan Jingxi is a show flat located in a townhouse in Beijing. The interior covers 300 square meters and applies a subtraction approach, removing redundant functional spaces and reorganizing the circulation to create an open plan. A series of miniature gardens is brought into the home, giving the occupants varied views. The entrance hallway sits in the middle of the floor plan and serves as the main distribution space. An entrance garden faces the door and fills the area with brightness. Materials include marble, eucalyptus veneer, leather and brass.

Within the evolving discourse of contemporary Asian interior design, this residential installation by T.K. CHU DESIGN represents a particularly sophisticated meditation on the relationship between constructed environment and natural world, achieving what might be termed biophilic maximalism through the bold gesture of an interior garden enclosure that commands the threshold space with theatrical presence. The design demonstrates masterful technical achievement in its execution of the curved glass structure, which required precision engineering to achieve the fluid serpentine profile while maintaining structural integrity and visual transparency. The compositional strategy reveals a deep understanding of spatial choreography, positioning the garden installation as a liminal element that both separates and connects the entry sequence with the living areas beyond, transforming passage through space into an experiential journey of discovery. The ceiling treatment merits particular attention as an architectural element that transcends mere functional coverage, its undulating white form creating a dialogue with the organic curves below while introducing vertical spatial interest that draws the eye upward. The material palette evidences careful consideration of surface qualities and their contribution to overall atmospheric effect, from the lacquered depth of the obsidian flooring that grounds the composition in geological permanence to the burnished warmth of brass elements that introduce precious metal accents without ostentation. The sculptural white deer figure operates within traditions of garden ornament while transcending decorative function through its placement and execution, becoming a focal point that anchors the botanical composition and introduces narrative possibility. The integration of living plant material within a climate-controlled enclosure speaks to contemporary concerns with bringing nature into domestic space while acknowledging the technical challenges such integration presents. Viewers might contemplate how this design challenges conventional boundaries between interior and exterior, built and natural, permanent and living, inviting reflection on what constitutes sanctuary in the contemporary urban condition.

Production Technology
"Subtraction design"was the design method of the whole project. We removed some redundant functional spaces, and reconstructed the spatial flow, so as to create a living space with spacious atmosphere and rational moving line. In such an apartment, the family members could encounter frequently, which means the design could be a guidance to affect actions and emotions.
Main materials: Jinyu marble, Saint Laurent black gold marble, Eucalyptus veneer, White glass, Wall cloth, Leather, Brass
Design Challenge
In an ever-changing era, the living mode of the high-end consumers tends to enjoy their variable life with their love ones as well as their families. Thus the mission and challenge of us, the designers, are to design a living context to satisfy, suit and lead the lifestyle of the target consumers, and create sharing and private areas for every family member.
Project Duration
Project Duration: From May 2018 to November 2018
Operation Flow
The designers wished to create a space that appeals to the elites and shows the value of design: using materials in different forms and maximizing the imagination of life to stick to the occupants' unique thinking.
Thus, the design of living room retains the classic models yet in simplified forms, adds modern elements into the space and importantly keeps the luxury feature, striking a balance between the classic and the modern.
Research
The designers expanded the kitchen space and used lounge bar to integrate various elements including Chinese kitchen, Western kitchen, bar and breakfast bar, etc., presenting an annular circulation to enrich the possibilities of colorful life.
In the bedroom, apart from the streamlined bed-rest, the round bed is used to inject dynamism into the space rather than the conventional one, revealing the "playful" nature of elites again.
The living area is flexible to have different functional divisions. Free of stacks of materials, the luxury style and exquisite layout demonstrate the intrinsic quality of elites.
Inspiration
The designers practiced the lifestyle curation on the model room in the townhouse -Maoyuan Jingxi located in Beijing. Through "space construction", the design team tried out modern trends, living arrangements and living concepts by "concept editing". The design no longer aimed to serve people's needs for the functions with an aesthetic cover, but to spark inspiration that would plant a seed of creative thinking in every guest's mind, which was the nature of art activities.
