Interviews

Grand Interview

Your innovative approach to combining workspace functionality with pet companionship in the Drago Desk Office Table Solution addresses a growing need - could you elaborate on how your personal experience with your Weimaraner influenced specific design decisions?

The Drago Desk was born from my personal experience working from home with my Weimaraner by my side. Weimaraners are very affectionate and tend to form strong bonds, so my dog always wanted to be close, often nudging his way under the desk or curling up next to me, which made me realize how much our pets seek connection during our workday. This inspired the design’s cozy pet nook, which sits at just the right height and depth for a medium-sized dog to feel close without interrupting workflow. The layout provides easy accessibility and eye contact, so pets can stay within reach, fostering that bond while allowing the owner to stay productive.

The Drago Desk Office Table Solution features remarkable adaptability with its three different width configurations - what inspired you to incorporate this versatility, and how does it enhance both human and pet comfort in various home office settings?

The three width configurations stemmed from observing how different people and pets interact in diverse spaces. Home offices vary widely in size and setup, and I wanted the Drago Desk to accommodate both spacious and compact environments without compromising on functionality or comfort. The adaptable widths ensure that even if someone has a smaller room or a shared workspace, they can still enjoy the Drago Desk’s dual-purpose design. For example, the compact configuration is perfect for tight spaces, providing a cozy pet area without feeling overcrowded, while the larger widths offer more surface area for work essentials and allow pets more room to settle comfortably. This flexibility enhances comfort for both the user and their pet by allowing them to share the space more harmoniously, no matter the layout of the home office.

Your thoughtful consideration of cable management in the Drago Desk Office Table Solution prioritizes pet safety - could you walk us through the evolution of the closed main box design and how it balances practical functionality with pet protection?

Cable management was a priority in the Drago Desk design, especially with pets in mind, because curious pets (and my Weimaraner is no exception!) can be drawn to dangling cords, which can be hazardous. The closed main box design evolved as a solution to securely house cables and devices while keeping them out of reach for pets, ensuring both safety and a clean look.

Production Technology
The main material is pine plywood, 15mm thick. The box is joined with wooden dowels and confirmats, under worktop construction is a mix of glued joints and confirmats. Worktop is just placed on protruded leg parts which go in worktop drills.
Design Challenge
There were a few unique challenges during design process. Very difficult one was to make the design working for any dog body type. I realized that even small dog can feel comfortable in bigger space, which was a win-win situation. I wanted to avoid any sharp edges or at least keep it as low as possible. During design process there was necessary sort out a problem with cable management, the goal was to keep the pet out of reach. I achieved it with closed main box, although there were versions with open sides to keep the overall weight lower.
Research
There were a lot of testing of final dimensions. It was a very important to get attention to ergonomics of any dog type, so it won't get harm to get in or being inside of box. Also dogs have to "feel" the owner, being able to see him whole day is making them comfortable. Other problem was to choose a proper fabric for cushions, as it has to tear resistant. There was also testing of final coating of plywood boards to avoid any possible poisoning.
Inspiration
It began when we started to work from home and therefore invaded the space of our Weimaraner who used to be home alone the whole day while we were at work. Suddenly, we had this big dog under our standard desks, entangled in cables, pulling out the cords, just to be close to us as much as possible. We had to come up with something that would work for all of us...
Project Duration
The project started with initial sketches in July 2018 and finished August 2020 in my workshop in Svaty Anton, Slovakia.
Operation Flow
Drago Desk could be used as a single or corner solution. The box has cut-outs to for holding the desk in position, with changing the positions of worktop you can achieve 3 different widths. Also with slightly amended worktop there is an option to have a corner solution.
