About Accordio Pet House
Accordio is a portable pet house made of silicone. The lightweight body folds like an accordion, so the house can be carried easily during outdoor activities and travel. The silicone surface is simple to clean. Pressing both sides compresses the house to one sixth of its full size. Eight reinforced magnetic frames provide structural stability and hold the collapsed form together, keeping the shape flat and compact. A fabric cushion fits inside the collapsed house for convenient transport.

- Production Technology
- Accordio is made with silicone. Each magnetic frame (a total of 8) is reinforced for structural stability. Once collapsed, these frames adhere each other and keep it compact and portable.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was how to keep accordio in a flattened shape when it is collapsed. Several ways were explored such as snap buttons, strap and etc. Amongst them, magnetic frames were chosen to be an ideal solution as they could provide structural stability as well as visual clarity.
- Project Duration
- The project started in June 2020 in Calgary, Canada and finished in July 2020 in Banff, Canada.
- Operation Flow
- This silicone house can be compressed in a 1/6 size by pushing both sides. A fabric cushion can be conveniently fit into the collapsed form for portability.
- Research
- Accordio is a design study about portable pet houses. The design explores the use of silicone for pet housing. The light-weighted and safe nature of silicone provides many potentials for a portable pet house.
- Inspiration
- Accordio was first inspired by my niece's silicone bowl plate. I was intrigued by its flexibility and portability. After some research, I found that silicone also has a fascinating collapsible feature, which was later adopted into a foldable house.
