About Kaisa Yuebanshan Community Center
Kaisa Yuebanshan is a community center in Zhongshan, China. The building covers 2100 square meters and is organized on two floors. A three-story volume connects two terraces with a height difference of about four meters. The design draws on local Lingnan architecture, including patio spaces and curved walls. Arc-shaped white walls are repeated to give the facade a soft and rhythmic appearance. A 12-meter span and a 5-meter cantilever keep the interior open. Public spaces on both floors support daily life and frame the mountain views to the north and south.
Shenzhen TIANHUA and Kaisa Group's Kaisa Yuebanshan Community Center stands as an eloquent expression of contemporary architectural practice that thoughtfully synthesizes modernist principles with contextual sensitivity to landscape and human experience. The structure's commanding white volumes participate in a long tradition of architectural purity, where the reduction of formal elements to essential geometric relationships creates spaces of clarity and contemplation. The composition demonstrates masterful understanding of proportion and rhythm, evident in the carefully calibrated sequence of arched openings that punctuate the upper façade, establishing a measured cadence that suggests both classical precedent and innovative reinterpretation. Technical accomplishment manifests throughout the design's execution, from the precise planar surfaces that achieve near-seamless uniformity to the sophisticated handling of the building's relationship with its verdant surroundings. The integration of mature specimen trees within the immediate architectural precinct suggests a design philosophy that values existing natural assets, allowing organic forms to engage in productive dialogue with constructed geometry. One observes how the elevated portions of the structure, supported by slender pilotis, create zones of spatial porosity that invite passage and visual connection between exterior gardens and interior programmatic spaces. The chromatic restraint, limiting the architectural palette to variations of white and cool gray, enables the building to function as a luminous presence within the landscape while simultaneously allowing the rich greens of vegetation to achieve heightened visual intensity through contrast. This careful choreography of built form and living landscape invites viewers to consider how architecture might serve not merely functional requirements but also aspirational human needs for beauty, tranquility, and connection with natural systems.

- Production Technology
- In order to ensure the comfort of the space, a 12-meter large span structure and a 5-meter cantilever structure are adopted to increase the number and strength of secondary beams to control the clear height. The structure and shape of the second floor are designed in an integrated manner to hide the structure from the shape. Inside the column.
- Design Challenge
- Zhongshan Kaisa Yuebanshan Community Center creates a new space in terms of space. The small area combines the height difference of the site to design a two-story living complex that can accommodate the real daily life of residents. Taking full advantage of the natural landscape, the mountain view is introduced into the life of the residents. The building is like a container of time, which locks the scenery and places the soul.
- Project Duration
- The project started in March 2020 in Zhongshan and finished in April 2021 in Zhongshan.
- Operation Flow
- The simple arc-shaped white wall encloses an independent display interface, which makes the building soft, supplemented by the faint lighting design, so that the whole picture has a sense of space and depth, and gives the building agile vitality.
- Research
- The designers modernized the combination of the traditional Sishuiguitang patio space with the traditional elements of the Lingnan arc-shaped wok and translated it into the building to create the main shape element of the facade-the arc-shaped wall. The soft shape is in harmony with the mountains on the north and south sides. , And then arrange the array of arc-shaped walls to create a sense of rhythm in the space.
- Inspiration
- The designers have excavated the local culture of Zhongshan and absorbed the architectural layout and cultural connotation of the Chen Family Ancestral Hall. They hope that the Life Aesthetics Hall will also have a multi-dimensional space to accommodate the daily real public life of the crowd. Based on the warm climate of Lingnan, architecture and landscape are closely related.
