Interviews
Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The main principle behind "House of Solace" was to create a serene, functional living space that harmonizes with the vibrant yet chaotic environment of Mumbai. Inspired by timeless French aesthetics, we aimed to infuse classic elegance with modern sensibilities. The high ceilings and colonial architecture provided a canvas for a design that feels expansive and tranquil. The incorporation of natural light and open spaces enhances the sense of calm, making it a perfect retreat for a global Indian client.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
My primary focus was to maximize functionality while maintaining aesthetic appeal in a compact space. The goal was to create a home that feels spacious and inviting, despite its modest size. Each area was designed to serve multiple purposes, reflecting the client’s lifestyle as a bachelor who works from home. Achieving a balance between elegance and practicality was crucial, ensuring that every element contributed to a cohesive and tranquil living environment.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
I plan to showcase "House of Solace" at various design exhibitions and competitions to highlight its innovative use of space and sustainable design practices. Additionally, I aim to explore similar projects that focus on compact living, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and customization to meet individual client needs. This project has sparked a passion for creating urban sanctuaries, and I intend to continue pushing the boundaries of interior design in this realm.
Grand Interview
Your innovative transformation of House of Solace Studio Apartment from a one-bedroom space into a studio layout showcases remarkable spatial efficiency - could you walk us through the key decisions that enabled you to maximize both functionality and aesthetic appeal within the 490 square feet?
Transforming House of Solace involved a comprehensive approach to design, where both functionality and aesthetic appeal were prioritized. The decision to create an open-plan layout was central to this transformation. By demolishing the wall between the living room and kitchen, we established a continuous flow that not only visually expanded the space but also fostered a sense of connectivity, essential for a compact home.To maximize functionality, we focused on multi-purpose furniture. For instance, the large desk was strategically positioned by the window to harness natural light, creating an inviting workspace that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. This configuration allows for productivity while maintaining a connection to the living area, which is vital for a singleton who works from home. The color palette was another critical decision. We opted for a sophisticated mix of whites, blacks, and greys, accented by electric blue and yellow. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to a feeling of spaciousness. The use of these colors creates a modern yet timeless atmosphere, making the compact area feel both elegant and livable. In addition, we incorporated design elements that create visual interest without overwhelming the space. The herringbone pattern of the wooden-look tiles extends from the floor to the walls, drawing the eye upward and creating an illusion of height. Every design decision was made with the intent to ensure that the apartment remains both functional and aesthetically harmonious, demonstrating that even in limited square footage, thoughtful design can lead to a richly layered living experience.
The Art Deco heritage of House of Solace Studio Apartment provides a unique architectural canvas - how did you balance preserving these historical elements while integrating modern French aesthetics and contemporary functionality?
The challenge of merging Art Deco heritage with modern French aesthetics required a nuanced understanding of both styles. We recognized that the architectural features of the building—such as the high ceilings and symmetrical layouts—were integral to its character. Instead of altering these elements, we embraced them, enhancing the inherent beauty of the Art Deco style while introducing contemporary touches. To achieve this balance, we selected furnishings and decor that reflect a timeless French aesthetic, characterized by elegance and simplicity. For example, we chose a refined color palette and incorporated sleek lines in furniture design, which contrasts beautifully with the ornate details typical of Art Deco. The combination of a classic Chesterfield sofa in electric blue and minimalist side tables exemplifies this blend, as it juxtaposes bold modern colors with traditional forms.Additionally, we focused on integrating modern functionality without compromising the historical charm. The open kitchen design, which flows seamlessly into the living area, is a prime example of how contemporary living can be harmonized with historical architecture. The materials chosen, such as raw cut plywood for the kitchen island, add a rustic yet modern flair that complements the overall design narrative.Ultimately, we aimed to create spaces that feel cohesive and timeless, where the past and present coexist harmoniously. This thoughtful integration results in an apartment that not only celebrates its historical roots but also meets the demands of modern living.
The striking combination of black, white, greys with electric blue and yellow accents in House of Solace Studio Apartment creates a distinctive urban atmosphere - what inspired this specific color palette and how does it enhance the living experience for a singleton resident?
The color palette for the House of Solace was inspired by the vibrant urban landscape of Mumbai, coupled with the client's personal style and lifestyle needs. Our aim was to create an environment that feels alive and invigorating, yet remains a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. The foundational colors of black, white, and greys provide a sophisticated backdrop that enhances the architecture's clean lines and allows the space to feel expansive.Electric blue and yellow were chosen as accent colors to inject energy and warmth into the apartment. These hues not only add personality but also serve to define different areas within the studio, creating distinct zones without physical barriers. For instance, the electric blue sofa is a striking centerpiece that invites relaxation, while the yellow accents in the kitchen and workspace promote creativity and cheerfulness. This color scheme also plays a psychological role in enhancing the living experience. The neutral tones create a calm atmosphere that is conducive to focus and productivity, essential for a resident who works from home. Meanwhile, the vibrant accents foster a sense of joy and liveliness, making the apartment feel welcoming and engaging. Overall, this carefully curated palette not only reflects the urban context of Mumbai but also aligns with the client's lifestyle, creating a harmonious balance that enriches daily living.

- Production Technology
- A combination of Teak wood and Polyurethane paint finish was used for furniture. Concrete, Terrazzo and Metal was used for all decorative lights. Wooden look tiles were laid on the floor, pre-cut into four pieces and organized in the herringbone pattern. This is not only spread across the studio but also seeps up the living room main wall. The island of the kitchenette is cladded with cut sections of plywood which is finished in matt polish to enhance its layers.
- Design Challenge
- The Bedroom - An innovative mirror feature we designed for this home. A tall mirror along which is a runner in our chosen colours. In jest, we call these our House colours akin to a royal lineage. This runner flows into a circular rug on the floor, lending warmth to the wood tiled floor.
The challenge was to give ample height and storage to this compact home even though it was for a singleton. We had to make this space appear way larger than it looked to get in as much natural light and create a uniform warmth to this space. - Research
- The wall between the living room and the kitchen had been demolished and the open kitchen was effectively making this living space appear larger. Since this building was built during the British rule, breaking the existing 40mm thick old terrazzo floor seemed risky. Therefore, wooden look tiles were laid on the floor, pre-cut into four pieces and organized in the herringbone pattern. This is not only spread across the studio but also seeps up the living room main wall.
Each space has an interesting feature:
The Living room - A TV wall unit with storage for gadgets and shelves to display curios picked up across travels, is connected to the kitchenette making it a one large unit but still maintaining its independent roles.
The Kitchenette - An island houses the cooking console with an overhead chimney and storage drawers beneath. The unit is designed using raw cut plywood edge pieces running throughout the exterior and is given a matt varnish to enhance its raw rustic sharp texture.
The Bedroom - A large black framed glass double door partition instead of a single solid door lead the way to the client’s bedroom. A tall mirror on the wall along which is a custom designed rug in our chosen colors flows into a two toned circular rug on the floor. Quite a feature on a wall background. - Inspiration
- The designer decided to go for a timeless French aesthetic infused with modern sensibilities. The client's brief was simple to Spruce it up in the Sanctioned Budget. And gave the designer the freedom to do so. The knowledge that this is a singleton’s home at that set the tone for the design approach. A color palette of white, black, greys with a smattering of electric blue and pop yellow was zeroed down to bring in the urbane. Each furniture element was customized and meticulously detailed.
- Project Duration
- The project started in November 2020 and finished in March 2021 in Colaba, Mumbai, India.
- Operation Flow
- An eight feet tall teak wood finish main door opens to a cosy living room that is filled with natural light courtesy a large window and a tiny balconette. The wall between this room and the kitchen has been demolished and the open kitchen now effectively makes this living space appear larger. Wooden look tiles were laid on the floor which not only it spreads across the studio but also seeps up the living room main wall. Upon this wall, hangs an artwork commissioned to a young artist to be evocative yet flaunt the yellow and blue that ties the otherwise sombre colors together. A black skirting flows throughout the walls with a wood detailing as an added design detail. As the client largely works from home, there was a request for a large desk. The window, was given a black detail to give the illusion of height, capitalizing on the natural light. Across this set up is a TV wall unit with storage and shelves to display curios. The small balcony was enclosed, creating a serene spot for the client. An art deco chair, a side table, some indoor green and a ceiling light for when the sun fades. Flowing out of the living area the kitchen is compact and fuss free and has an island with a cooking console, an overhead chimney and storage drawers beneath. This is flanked by a work top and appliances at one end and a built-in glass cabinet at the other. Black finish door frame and blue paneled shelves inside doubles up as a bar. The bedroom has a large black framed glass double door at the entrance, a wardrobe on the left and a slender panel on one side for shelving. Adjacent to this is a mirror feature we designed for this home. A queen-sized bed takes up the rest of the tight room and its headboard is matte black and upholstered for extra comfort. In the bathroom, the fittings are black, walls are powder blue, cabinets are a mellow shade of lemon and tiles which are a play of our monochromatic colors.
