About Curved Residential
Beyond Straight Line. The concept of form and shape, rediscovers curved furniture. An apartment within an area of 66 m2. It is divided into two distinct zones. Thanks to the rational division of functions, the architect gives the impression of a perfectly designed living space and night space. The general open space, the non-standard treatment of passages between zones, resignation from conventional doors invite you to go further. The Architect chose materials like Khalo stone, fabrics and furniture boards that give a natural feel. All allowed to create an original and elegant interior.

- Production Technology
- A general combination of form and shapes rediscovers curved furnitures. The Architect applied Khalo stone, fabrics and furniture boards that give a fabric feel. The smoothness of forms obtained with mdf furniture. The designed lighting is based on hidden busbar systems, without rim light eyelets. All furniture, except for the armchair, was custom-made. Pocket doors system completely hide household appliances. The division of functions, is carried out with a set of furniture.
- Design Challenge
- By requesting an original second house or apartment in the city, the investor provides a fantastic opportunity to depart from traditional space division. The Architect was able to clean the initial space division and hide the structural elements, shapes, which didn't match the concept shapes. The interior was carefully furnished. Even in open spaces, each area is clearly defined, increasing the efficiency of the use of the area. The challenge was to hide all appliances and necessary wardrobes.
- Project Duration
- The project began its design in 2020, its construction started in Cracow, Poland, in 2021 and was officially completed in March 2022.
- Operation Flow
- Thanks to the rational division of functions, the architect gives the impression of a perfectly designed living space. The general open space, the non-standard passages between zones, and the lack of typical doors invite you to go further, tempting you to penetrate the interior. This allows you to feel the harmony that prevails in the interior, shows the pursuit of a natural balance of peace and stability, emphasizing the sense of simplicity and comfort by combining the zones as a whole.
- Research
- We managed to create a warm, harmonious interior design, subtly, restrained lighting, a consistently designed functional layout in line with the idea of creating a gentle curve, a soft transition from public to private space, resignation from conventional doors. Designing interiors dominated by a curved line requires special design sensitivity. Use of sublime curves and absolute radius change control.
- Inspiration
- The presented project was designed on the basis of the given space in building without "edges". Wanting to create something unique, we felt that it required from us to have a light form, open space, delicate colors and an appropriate selection of materials that would allow us to implement our ideas technologically. Everything is served in a generally young, fresh atmosphere. The reception of a very warm atmosphere, which, despite its modern and bold form, transforms this block into a home.

Design Interview about Curved Residential
Curved Apartment was conceived as a direct response to the non-orthogonal geometry of the building. The absence of straight corners became the primary design driver, shaping both the spatial organization and the architectural language of the interior.
The main idea was to create a calm, continuous living environment where architecture, furniture, lighting and technical solutions merge into one coherent composition. Instead of treating the curved geometry as a limitation, the project embraces fluidity and softness to create a timeless and emotionally balanced atmosphere.
The inspiration came from contemporary minimalism, tactile materiality and the idea of spatial continuity without rigid boundaries. The project explores how curved forms, restrained materials and integrated details can create comfort, harmony and intuitive everyday living within a compact residential space.

The main focus was to transform a compact, non-orthogonal apartment into a calm and coherent living environment defined by continuity, softness and functional clarity. I wanted the interior to feel fluid and intuitive, where movement between spaces happens naturally without rigid boundaries or visual interruptions.
An important objective was integrating architecture, furniture, lighting and technical systems into one unified spatial composition. Every curved element, built-in volume and concealed detail was designed to reinforce the sense of continuity and calmness throughout the apartment.
At the same time, functionality remained fundamental. The project had to provide comfort, storage, flexibility and ergonomic clarity while maintaining a restrained and timeless architectural expression.

Curved Apartment became an important exploration of fluid spatial organization and integrated interior architecture, and I would like to continue developing these ideas in future residential and hospitality projects.
The project also reinforced my interest in designing interiors where geometry, atmosphere and technical precision merge seamlessly into one experience. In the future, I would like to further explore soft spatial transitions, tactile minimalism and emotionally balanced living environments on larger architectural scales.

The project evolved through multiple stages of refinement and spatial reorganization. Because the apartment’s curved geometry required a highly customized approach, a significant amount of time was dedicated to studying circulation, proportions, furniture integration and technical coordination.
The design process was focused not only on aesthetics, but also on achieving spatial continuity, ergonomic comfort and functional clarity within a compact layout.

The project was commissioned by a private client seeking a comfortable weekend apartment with a calm atmosphere, functional openness and timeless character.
At the same time, the unusual geometry of the building became a strong architectural inspiration. Instead of correcting or hiding the curved perimeter, the design embraces it completely, allowing the geometry itself to shape the spatial logic, furniture design and overall atmosphere of the interior.

I am particularly interested in residential interiors because they allow architecture to influence everyday rituals, emotions and personal experience in a very direct way. Projects such as Curved Apartment create opportunities to explore how geometry, light, materiality and movement can shape atmosphere and comfort simultaneously.
This project was especially interesting because the curved geometry challenged conventional spatial organization and opened possibilities for creating a softer, more fluid and emotionally calming interior environment.

What distinguishes Curved Apartment is the way the entire spatial concept emerges directly from the building’s curved geometry. The absence of orthogonal walls became the defining architectural principle rather than a technical limitation.
Another important aspect is the integration of architecture, furniture, lighting and concealed technical systems into one continuous composition. The project avoids rigid spatial divisions and instead creates fluid transitions through sequencing, built-in elements and soft boundaries.

The name “Curved Apartment” directly reflects the essential architectural idea of the project. The curved geometry of the building became the defining force behind the entire spatial organization, furniture language and atmosphere of the interior.
The name also emphasizes continuity, softness and fluidity — qualities that define both the physical space and the emotional experience of the apartment.

The project combined conceptual sketching, digital modeling, technical detailing and advanced visualization tools throughout the design process. Because of the complex geometry, precise coordination between architectural elements, custom furniture and technical systems was especially important.
At the same time, intuition, observation of movement and sensitivity toward atmosphere played an equally important role in shaping the final interior experience.

Technology played an essential but discreet role in Curved Apartment. Digital modeling and technical coordination tools were fundamental in developing the continuous curved geometry, integrated furniture systems and concealed architectural details with precision.
At the same time, technology was intentionally hidden within the final interior. Ventilation, lighting systems, storage and sliding mechanisms were fully integrated into the architectural composition so the space could remain visually calm, seamless and emotionally balanced.
In this project, technology supports continuity and comfort rather than becoming a visible feature itself.

The project was strongly influenced by spatial and functional analysis rather than numerical or purely data-driven research. The main focus was understanding how curved geometry affects circulation, perception and everyday living within a compact residential layout.
Extensive studies were conducted regarding movement flow, ergonomic relationships, storage integration and the interaction between light, materials and curved surfaces. Technical research was also necessary to integrate ventilation systems, concealed lighting and custom furniture within the non-orthogonal spatial framework.

One of the greatest challenges was maintaining visual continuity and spatial softness while resolving complex technical requirements within a relatively compact apartment.
The curved geometry required highly customized solutions at every scale of the project — from furniture fabrication and concealed storage to lighting integration and construction detailing. Achieving precision without losing the calm and effortless atmosphere of the interior required close coordination between designers, contractors and craftsmen throughout the realization process.

Curved Apartment represents an important exploration of fluid interior architecture and integrated spatial design within contemporary residential living. The project investigates how non-orthogonal geometry can become an opportunity for creating continuity, softness and emotional calmness rather than complexity.
Submitting the project to an international competition felt like an opportunity to share this architectural approach within a broader design dialogue and present a more restrained, sensory and human-centered vision of contemporary interiors.

Grand Interview about Curved Residential
The building's elliptical form became the project's greatest source of inspiration. Rather than treating its unconventional geometry as a design constraint, I saw it as an opportunity to rethink the relationship between architecture, movement, and everyday life. From the very beginning, I decided that the interior should not compete with the building's form but evolve naturally from it, allowing the architecture itself to become the main design language. This approach required abandoning many conventional planning methods based on orthogonal layouts. Instead of organizing the apartment through straight lines and rigid boundaries, I developed a spatial composition where every element—from circulation and built-in furniture to lighting and material transitions—responds to the natural rhythm established by the curved envelope. The geometry became an invisible guide, shaping not only the appearance of the interior but also the way it is experienced. What fascinated me most was how the absence of right angles changed people's perception of space. Movement became more intuitive, perspectives continuously evolved, and the apartment revealed itself gradually rather than all at once. This created a calmer and more engaging living environment, where architecture encourages exploration instead of directing it through conventional corridors and enclosed rooms. For me, Curved Residential demonstrates that architecture should never be treated as a fixed container waiting to be furnished. When the building itself possesses a strong identity, every interior decision should reinforce that character. The result is an environment where architecture, function, light, and craftsmanship become part of a single architectural narrative rather than independent design layers.
One of the greatest challenges in Curved Residential was ensuring that functionality remained completely present while becoming almost entirely invisible. The project's minimal appearance is the result of extensive technical coordination rather than visual simplification. Every concealed appliance, storage volume, and service element had to be carefully integrated without interrupting the apartment's sculptural character. The building's curved geometry ruled out the use of conventional modular furniture systems. Every built-in component was individually designed, measured, and detailed to follow continuously changing radii while accommodating appliances, ventilation, electrical installations, and storage requirements. This demanded close collaboration with specialist craftsmen, where millimetre-level precision became essential to maintaining uninterrupted architectural lines. An equally important aspect was reducing visual noise. Handle-free cabinetry, concealed doors, integrated ventilation details, and precisely aligned shadow gaps allowed technical components to disappear into the architecture instead of competing with it. At the same time, accessibility and everyday usability could never be compromised. Every hidden element remained intuitive to operate, comfortable to maintain, and fully adapted to the client's daily routines.I believe successful minimalism is never achieved by removing functionality—it is achieved by integrating it so intelligently that it becomes almost imperceptible. In Curved Residential, engineering, craftsmanship, and architecture work together to create an environment where technical complexity quietly supports a sense of calm, clarity, and effortless living.
The decision to minimise conventional doors was motivated by the desire to create an uninterrupted living experience rather than a sequence of isolated rooms. I wanted the apartment to be perceived as one coherent environment where individual functions emerge naturally through architectural composition instead of being defined by physical barriers. In this project, openness became a tool for improving both spatial perception and everyday comfort.Rather than relying on doors to separate activities, I used changes in ceiling height, bespoke furniture, lighting, material transitions, and carefully composed sightlines to establish subtle distinctions between public and private areas. These architectural cues allow each part of the apartment to maintain its own identity while remaining visually connected to the whole. As occupants move through the space, they experience a gradual sequence of perspectives instead of abrupt transitions. This strategy also transformed the way natural light behaves throughout the apartment. Without unnecessary partitions interrupting its path, daylight flows freely across the interior, enhancing the sculptural quality of the curved walls and reinforcing the sense of openness despite the relatively compact footprint. The apartment feels more generous because visual continuity replaces physical fragmentation.Ultimately, I believe architecture should guide experience rather than simply divide space. By replacing conventional boundaries with carefully orchestrated spatial relationships, Curved Residential creates an environment that feels intuitive, welcoming, and emotionally engaging. The absence of doors is therefore not a stylistic gesture but an architectural decision that strengthens the project's overall narrative and encourages a more fluid way of living.
Lighting was conceived as one of the project's primary architectural tools rather than as a finishing layer applied at the end of the design process. From the earliest sketches, I considered light as something capable of revealing form, shaping atmosphere, and influencing the way people experience the apartment throughout the day. My objective was not to illuminate objects but to reveal the character of the architecture itself. The concealed busbar system became an essential component because it allowed the technical infrastructure to disappear almost entirely. Instead of introducing visible tracks or prominent fixtures that could interrupt the purity of the interior, the lighting system was seamlessly integrated into the ceiling composition. This solution provided both visual clarity and long-term flexibility, allowing lighting scenarios to evolve without compromising the architectural concept.Designing illumination within a continuously curved environment required careful coordination between geometry, materiality, and engineering. Every luminaire was positioned to emphasize the soft transitions between surfaces, avoiding harsh contrasts while allowing light to gently model the apartment's sculptural forms. Indirect illumination was used extensively to create depth and atmosphere, while carefully selected accent lighting highlighted key architectural features without becoming visually dominant.Equally important was the emotional quality of light. A consistent warm colour temperature was chosen to reinforce the tactile richness of natural materials and establish a calm, welcoming atmosphere from morning until evening. For me, successful lighting is almost invisible—it quietly guides movement, enhances proportions, and strengthens the emotional connection between people and the spaces they inhabit. In Curved Residential, illumination became an integral part of the architecture, revealing its identity rather than competing with it.
Material selection was guided by a simple principle: every surface should contribute not only to the visual composition but also to the emotional experience of living in the space. I wanted the apartment to communicate through texture, weight, temperature, and the way materials interact with natural light. Rather than creating contrast through decoration, I sought harmony through carefully balanced tactile qualities.Khalo stone became one of the defining materials because it possesses a remarkable balance between strength and refinement. Its natural veining introduces subtle movement that resonates with the apartment's flowing architectural language without becoming visually overwhelming. Instead of serving as an ornamental feature, the stone establishes a sense of permanence and authenticity, grounding the interior with timeless elegance. To complement this expressive natural material, I introduced custom fabric-feel surfaces that provide warmth and softness. Their matte texture absorbs light differently, creating gentle visual transitions and reducing reflections that could disrupt the calm atmosphere. These surfaces also invite touch, adding another sensory dimension to the experience of the apartment and reinforcing the idea that interiors should be felt as much as they are seen.Material continuity played an equally significant role. Similar finishes extend across architectural elements, bespoke furniture, and integrated storage, dissolving the distinction between individual objects and the surrounding space. This consistency allows the apartment to be perceived as one coherent composition rather than a collection of separate components. For me, materials are never selected because they are fashionable. They are chosen for their ability to shape atmosphere, age gracefully, and establish an emotional dialogue between architecture and its occupants. In Curved Residential, the restrained palette supports the sculptural geometry while creating an environment that feels timeless, serene, and deeply human.
My starting point was never to make the apartment appear larger than it actually is. Instead, I wanted to maximize the quality of the space by questioning conventional planning principles. I believe that successful residential design is measured not by floor area but by how naturally a home supports everyday life, encourages movement, and creates an emotional sense of openness. The design process focused on removing unnecessary interruptions rather than adding more elements. Every square metre was carefully evaluated to eliminate redundant circulation, simplify functional relationships, and allow spaces to perform multiple roles without feeling overloaded. Instead of relying on partitions, the apartment is organised through carefully positioned architectural volumes, bespoke furniture, lighting compositions, and subtle shifts in proportion. These elements define individual functions while preserving a clear and uninterrupted spatial experience. The curved geometry also became an advantage rather than a limitation. Smooth transitions naturally guide movement, soften circulation, and encourage intuitive interaction with the space. As perspectives continuously evolve, the apartment reveals itself gradually, creating a richness of experience that exceeds its physical dimensions. This dynamic quality makes the interior feel generous without relying on visual illusion or excessive minimalism.Every bespoke solution was developed with equal attention to aesthetics and practicality. Storage, technical installations, and everyday functions were integrated into the architectural composition so they support rather than dominate the living environment. The result is a home where efficiency is achieved through thoughtful design rather than compromise.Ultimately, Curved Residential reflects my belief that architecture should enrich everyday life through intelligence rather than excess. Even within a compact urban apartment, careful planning, precise craftsmanship, and a coherent design vision can create spaces that feel generous, functional, and emotionally rewarding far beyond what their size might suggest.
The bespoke furniture in Curved Residential was conceived as an architectural extension rather than a collection of independent objects. My intention was to create an interior where furniture, walls, ceilings, and materials speak the same design language, allowing every element to contribute to a unified spatial experience. Nothing was designed to stand out individually; instead, every piece supports the overall composition.Because of the apartment's elliptical geometry, conventional furniture systems simply could not respond to the architecture with the required precision. Every built-in element was therefore designed specifically for its location, following changing curves, proportions, and circulation paths while accommodating practical functions such as storage, integrated appliances, and concealed technical systems. This level of customization demanded close collaboration with skilled craftsmen throughout the fabrication process.Equally important was achieving visual balance. Clean proportions, carefully controlled detailing, and uninterrupted material continuity allowed the furniture to blend naturally into the surrounding architecture. Handle-free fronts, integrated lighting, and precisely aligned joints ensured that practical elements remained discreet, allowing attention to remain focused on space, light, and form.At the same time, every bespoke component was designed around everyday living. Comfort, ergonomics, and functionality were carefully considered so that the furniture not only complements the architecture but also improves the way the apartment is used. I believe successful bespoke design should feel intuitive rather than noticeable.Ultimately, the furniture in Curved Residential demonstrates my belief that architecture and craftsmanship are inseparable. When custom elements are developed as part of the architectural concept rather than added afterwards, they strengthen the identity of the space and create an interior that feels coherent, timeless, and deeply connected to the people who live within it.
One of the project's greatest challenges was creating a home that felt open without sacrificing the sense of personal retreat that every residence should provide. Rather than treating privacy as a question of physical separation alone, I explored how spatial relationships, movement, and visual perception could establish different levels of intimacy throughout the apartment. The transition from public to private spaces was intentionally gradual. Instead of clearly defined boundaries, the apartment unfolds through a carefully composed sequence of views, changing proportions, and subtle architectural cues. As occupants move through the interior, they naturally experience a progression from more social areas to increasingly personal spaces, without feeling confined by unnecessary partitions. The apartment's curved geometry plays an important role in this experience. Gentle changes in direction soften visual connections between different functions, creating moments of privacy without completely disconnecting one space from another. This allows natural light to travel freely while avoiding direct sightlines that could reduce the feeling of comfort. As a result, openness and intimacy coexist rather than compete.Custom architectural elements further reinforce these transitions. Bespoke furniture, integrated storage, and carefully positioned volumes subtly organize the apartment while maintaining uninterrupted circulation and visual clarity. These solutions allow each area to retain its own identity without disrupting the overall harmony of the interior. For me, privacy is ultimately about atmosphere rather than enclosure. When architecture carefully controls perspective, light, proportion, and movement, even a compact apartment can provide moments of calm, reflection, and personal comfort while preserving the generosity and openness that contemporary urban living increasingly demands.
From the outset, I wanted colour to play a supporting rather than dominant role. The architectural form already possessed a strong identity, so introducing bold contrasts would have distracted from the qualities that make the apartment unique. Instead, I developed a restrained palette that quietly reinforces the geometry while allowing light and materials to define the atmosphere. The selection of warm neutrals was carefully considered to establish a sense of visual continuity. Soft mineral whites, muted earth tones, natural stone hues, and subtle greys create smooth transitions between surfaces, allowing the eye to move comfortably through the interior without interruption. This restrained approach strengthens the perception of openness while highlighting the sculptural qualities of the curved architecture.Colour was never considered separately from material. Every finish responds differently to changing daylight, producing subtle variations in depth and texture throughout the day. Rather than relying on decorative accents, the apartment gains richness through the interaction between light, natural materials, and carefully balanced tonal relationships. This creates an environment that feels dynamic despite its minimal palette.Consistency also played an important role. Architectural surfaces, bespoke furniture, and integrated elements share closely related tones, reducing visual fragmentation and reinforcing the impression of a single, unified composition. This continuity allows individual details to disappear into the overall architectural narrative instead of competing for attention.I believe colour is most powerful when it creates emotion without demanding attention. In Curved Residential, the palette was designed to establish calmness, warmth, and timelessness, allowing the architecture itself to remain the true protagonist of the interior experience.
I believe the future of urban housing will depend less on increasing square metres and more on improving the quality of the spaces we create. As cities become denser and lifestyles continue to evolve, architects will be challenged to design homes that are not only efficient but also emotionally meaningful, adaptable, and capable of supporting well-being. Curved Residential was developed as an exploration of these possibilities. One of the project's central ideas is that spatial quality should not be measured by size alone. Thoughtful planning, bespoke architectural solutions, carefully integrated technology, and a clear design vision can transform a relatively compact apartment into a home that feels generous, comfortable, and deeply connected to its occupants. Innovation, in my view, comes from improving everyday life rather than introducing unnecessary complexity.I also hope the project encourages a more integrated approach to design. Too often architecture, interiors, lighting, furniture, and craftsmanship are treated as separate disciplines. Curved Residential demonstrates the value of developing these elements simultaneously, allowing each decision to strengthen the next. This holistic methodology results in spaces that are more coherent, more sustainable, and ultimately more enduring.Looking ahead, I believe future residential architecture will increasingly prioritise sensory experience over visual spectacle. People are seeking homes that provide tranquillity, authenticity, and a stronger connection to the way they live, rather than interiors defined by short-lived trends. Natural materials, carefully controlled light, and timeless proportions will therefore become even more significant.Ultimately, I hope Curved Residential encourages architects to see constraints as opportunities for innovation. Whether working with limited floor areas, challenging geometries, or complex urban conditions, meaningful design emerges from understanding how architecture can improve everyday life. If this project inspires a more thoughtful, human-centred approach to residential design, then its influence extends well beyond the boundaries of a single apartment.
