Grand Interview
Your innovative approach to digital design in Triangle Table, particularly its tree-like growth pattern, represents a fascinating merger of nature and technology. Could you elaborate on how this biological inspiration influenced your algorithmic design process?
In nature, "growth" is an eternal theme. Not only living organisms but also phenomena like the Qiantang River tidal bore in Hangzhou or the frozen rivers of Iceland exhibit this dendritic, radiating structure. We sought to capture the sense of order behind natural growth phenomena in our design. Nature appears chaotic, yet it is shaped by underlying digital laws. In this process, the computer is not a passive tool but a co-creator—it generates infinite possible forms within preset rules, and the designer then filters and selects the optimal solution that combines both aesthetic appeal and practical function, achieving a truly intelligent human-computer collaborative design.
The irregular desktop and branch-like steel legs of Triangle Table challenge traditional furniture aesthetics. How did you balance these unconventional design elements with practical functionality, especially in terms of stability and user comfort?
Irregularity is not arbitrary; it is the result of computational calculation. For product stability, the process—both structurally and materially—must proceed from thick to thin, from robust to delicate. Under the premise of a sound structural logic, simple mathematical formulas (such as mirroring, offsetting, etc.) are used to realize the design. This represents a new balance brought by digital design—breaking traditional symmetrical aesthetics while adhering to the fundamentals of function and ergonomics.
Triangle Table's ability to be arranged into different patterns using mathematical logic creates intriguing possibilities for space configuration. Could you share specific examples of how these arrangements have enhanced communication and workflow in open offices or coffee shops?
The modular design of the Triangle Table allows it to adapt to different scenarios through various arrangements and combinations. In open-plan offices, multiple tables can be joined to form fluid "islands," promoting informal communication and team collaboration. In cafes, they can be combined into organic cluster layouts. The relationships between people are no longer limited to just "face-to-face" or "side-by-side"; they can be "side-on": friends can talk shoulder-to-shoulder, while strangers can sit back-to-back, oriented slightly away from each other. The furniture and spatial relationships are no longer fixed but "grow" and adapt according to need.

- Unique Properties
- During exploration in digital design, designer tried to grow a table. It has an irregular desktop, which is made by Medium Density Fiberboard (MFD), and hold up intricate and branch like steel legs. Besides, users can arrange tables into different kind of patterns with mathematical logic, as well as gain entertaining. It is used in an open office or coffee shop to make the space more rhythmic. Curve desktop facilitates communication.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- 1560mm * 1110mm * 740mm Each

- Production Technology
- Digital design is a new design method that people and computer cooperate to design. We give computer some framework instructions, computer algorithm automatically control line or surface to generate some random shapes. Designers design products by adjusting these forms and combining with traditional design methods.
- Design Challenge
- Social perspectives challenge the public's understanding of traditional tables.
Technology implementation. it is necessary to consider the matching between different modular design and space and scene, as well as the scale and shape conforming to the environmental changes. - Research
- Digital design, a dynamic design style, pursuing uncertainties, can create a huge amount of variate by logical algorithm, as well as interact with human. Therefore, these random states and results of a new sense of openness bring people in certain environment more space of imagination, which we believe will change our way of thinking someday.
- Inspiration
- The theme of this design is growth. Because growth is a structural form with strong vitality. Digital design itself also imitates the growth form to create random form.So we try to use digital design to grow a table like a tree.
- Project Duration
- The project started in November 2019 in Hangzhou and finished in August 2020 in Hangzhou.
- Operation Flow
- The mathematical logic of equality and symmetry is used to create the straight line edge of the table. Users can make different shapes according to their needs. The surface and the supporting structure are connected by bolts, and users can change the color of the table according to their preference.
