What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The design draws inspiration from natural shelters like bird nests, aiming to create an emotional sense of safety and stillness. It symbolizes a return to presence through light and form.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
My main focus was to design something both poetic and functional—an object that encourages reflection in the home. I wanted to achieve a sense of emotional connection through minimal form.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
I plan to expand the Nest series with more furniture and lighting elements, and am exploring options for limited production or gallery exhibitions.

Your innovative approach to interweaving metal threads in NEST LAMP Lighting beautifully captures the essence of natural bird nests - could you share the journey that led you to translate this organic inspiration into an advanced metalworking technique?
The journey began with an emotional reflection on family and belonging during the pandemic. I was drawn to the bird’s nest as a symbol of fragile protection—a place built from fragments yet full of warmth. Translating this into metal required rethinking rigidity; I used dual-layered aluminum sheets with manually bent perforations to simulate woven threads. The process combined digital precision with intuitive handwork, allowing the cold material to express something innately human and nurturing.
The circular form and doughnut-shaped light in NEST LAMP Lighting seem to reflect Eastern philosophical concepts of unity and completeness - how did cultural symbolism influence your design decisions throughout the development process?
In Chinese culture, the circle symbolizes harmony, completeness, and reunion. The Nest Lamp, with its circular form, embodies the idea of a close-knit family coming together to create a warm and unified home. In nature, many animals build nests as a way of establishing their homes, and these nests are often inherently circular in shape—a form that resonates deeply with Eastern philosophy. This cultural perspective profoundly influenced my design thinking, leading me to create a work that, while made with modern technology and techniques, remains rooted in traditional values. It is a design that is universal in geometry yet intimate in meaning.
The interplay between light and shadow through NEST LAMP Lighting's metal threads creates an extraordinary ambient effect - what technical challenges did you face in achieving this delicate balance between illumination and material?
The greatest challenge was calibrating the shadow density and light diffusion. Each perforation and bend in the metal alters how light escapes. I prototyped dozens of patterns using varying perforation ratios, adjusting curvature and spacing by hand to ensure the shadows weren’t too harsh or distracting. The goal was to let the light breathe through the metal—like sunlight through woven straw—while retaining a warm, cohesive glow.

Throughout the design process, constant exploration and refinement have been directed towards the organic form woven through two metal threads and the interplay between light and metal reflections. This contemplation extends to the subtle illumination emanating from the gaps within the metal threads.

- In ancient China, threads held diverse meanings, with one of the most common associations being with feelings of longing. This linguistic connection stems from the phonetic similarity between missing and silk or threads. This linguistic resemblance gave rise to a metaphor for the hidden sentiments between individuals.

- When suspended at home and viewed from different angles, the pendant light reveals various facets, offering distinct visual experiences through the interplay between the two harmonious organic metal sheets and the light. The light seeping through the metal threads resonates with the soft glow, creating a dynamic interaction.
