About Spidique Chair
Spidique is a chair produced with 3D printing technology in PLA. The form of Spidique was generated with Ameba software, which applies the BESO algorithm for topological optimization. The calculated shape was then refined by the design team to improve ergonomics and visual appeal. Slender lines are merged into the structure to balance appearance and mechanics. Prototypes were printed and tested for comfort and durability. The intent behind Spidique is to reach the required function with a minimal amount of plastic and reduced material waste.
Yang siqi's Spidique Chair emerges from the contemporary discourse surrounding biomimetic design and computational morphogenesis, representing a sophisticated investigation into how natural structural principles might inform functional furniture typologies. The work appears to draw inspiration from biological load-bearing systems, particularly the elegant efficiency observed in skeletal frameworks and web-spinning arthropod anatomy, translating these organic logics into a coherent seating solution that challenges conventional furniture archetypes. Technical achievement manifests in the seamless continuity of the chair's tubular members, each element flowing into the next without visible joints or mechanical fasteners, suggesting either advanced manufacturing processes or masterful handcraft that achieves industrial precision. The chromatic decision to render the entire structure in pristine white serves multiple functions, simultaneously emphasizing sculptural form, establishing visual lightness despite apparent structural complexity, and positioning the object within modernist traditions that celebrate material honesty and formal purity. The inclusion of a seated figure actively engaged with a reading device transforms the image from mere product documentation into a narrative of human-design interaction, demonstrating the chair's accommodation of contemporary digital life while maintaining postural comfort. Compositional sophistication reveals itself in the careful balance between the chair's elaborate skeletal presence and the restrained backdrop that refuses to compete for attention, allowing formal appreciation of each curving member and spatial void. One might observe how the design negotiates between sculpture and utility, inviting contemplation of where functional object ends and artistic statement begins, a question that has animated design discourse since the craft movements of the nineteenth century through contemporary debates about design's cultural status.

- Unique Properties
- Spidique is a chair manufactured using 3D printing technology. Its shape calculation and design were carried out using the Ameba software, which employs the BESO (Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization) algorithm for topological optimization. A primary challenge during the design process was how to further optimize and redesign the computed chair shape.

- Design Challenge
- Navigating the optimization of the chair's computed shape posed a significant challenge. Historically, chair designs have been a blend of functionality and aesthetics, crafted over centuries of human experience. Today's social perspective demands both comfort and sustainability. While computation provides precise design outcomes, it sometimes lacks the human touch essential for ergonomics and visual appeal. External factors, such as production constraints, also influenced design choices. Moreover, with evolving technology, leveraging the right tools for accurate simulations was paramount. Bridging this gap between computational efficiency and human-centric design was the crux of my challenge.

- This design research focuses on the application of 3D printing technology in furniture manufacturing, aiming to explore its potential impact on innovation and environmental sustainability. I employed a comparative analysis, contrasting the efficiency, material usage, and environmental footprint between traditional furniture production and 3D printed furniture. Data collection primarily relied on surveys involving 20 furniture designers and 100 general consumers, and we also crafted a series of prototypes using CAD software and 3D printers. The results revealed that 3D printing technology can reduce material waste by approximately 25% and shorten production time by about 30% in furniture manufacturing. This discovery underscores the significant innovation opportunities 3D printing introduces to the furniture design industry, while also presenting a reduced environmental impact. In real-life implications, this suggests that the furniture sector is on the cusp of a transformative shift, which could not only stimulate commercial growth but also reshape consumption patterns and innovative thinking in the design world.
- Inspiration
- Plastic's introduction has drawn both praise and criticism. Its unmatched convenience makes it indispensable, but its environmental impact is concerning. In my opinion, plastic's eco-impact largely rests on our handling. When recycled efficiently, its harm lessens. Moreover, achieving design goals with minimal plastic material signifies sustainable design. Inspired by this, I'm developing a plastic-based design, leveraging simulations for structural support. Merging elegant lines into the chair's design, I aim to balance aesthetics with mechanics.
