About Zhumadian Hotel Design
Zhumadian is a hotel interior design located in Zhoukou, China. The lobby reflects the essence of traditional architecture and combines a rational sense of space with a restrained aesthetic. The restaurant is themed around ink landscape paintings, with ink elements applied to walls and cabinets in black, white, and gray tones. The display cabinet area follows a natural and minimalist style that combines marble and wood. In the pool area, natural stone meets clear water beneath a dark wooden Chinese mortise and tenon ceiling. The project covers 4000 square meters.
Guo Xiangyu's celebrated Zhumadian Hotel Design, recipient of the Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design, exemplifies the sophisticated integration of contemporary architectural vocabulary with contemplative East Asian landscape traditions, creating an aquatic sanctuary that transcends mere functional programming to achieve profound spatial poetry. The designer demonstrates exceptional command of material orchestration, juxtaposing the mechanical precision of the linear slatted ceiling system against the organic fluidity of water and the ethereal dissolution of the landscape mural, establishing a dialogue between tectonic discipline and natural ephemerality that characterizes the highest achievements in contemporary hospitality design. The monumental ink-wash mountain panorama that dominates the left boundary wall represents a particularly accomplished translation of traditional brush painting conventions into architectural scale, its atmospheric gradations from foreground ridges through middle-ground peaks to distant mist-shrouded summits creating an illusionistic window onto infinite landscape space that expands the perceptual boundaries of the interior far beyond its physical limits. Technical sophistication emerges in the careful calibration of illumination sources, where the cool daylight quality of the backlit landscape panel interacts with the warm amber vertical fixtures along the opposite wall to create complex chromatic modulation across the water surface. The incorporation of living plant elements demonstrates sensitivity to biophilic design principles, their vibrant organic presence softening the geometric rigor of the architectural framework while reinforcing conceptual connections to the natural world depicted in the mural. This work invites contemplation of how contemporary design might honor cultural heritage while serving contemporary needs, how the ancient meditative traditions of landscape appreciation might find renewed expression in spaces dedicated to physical and spiritual renewal.
