About Klyv Kids Knife

Klyv is an ergonomic knife designed for children aged two and up, created by designer Cristina Falcon. Its unique wedge-shaped blade aligns with young users' natural cutting instincts, fostering motor skills and kitchen confidence while reducing accident risk. The knife encourages family participation in meal prep, promoting healthy eating habits while integrating sustainable materials like polypropylene with 30 percent wheat straw and plastic-free kraft packaging. Klyv enables children to develop fine motor skills and independence in the kitchen, making cooking a fun and safe experience.

Within the evolving landscape of design for young people, Cristina Falcon's Klyv Kids Knife represents a thoughtful convergence of ergonomic innovation, material consciousness, and developmental philosophy that speaks to contemporary approaches in children's product design. The work emerges from a design tradition that recognizes children as capable participants in domestic life, deserving of tools scaled and engineered for their developing hands rather than diminished versions of adult implements. The distinctive triangular form with its integrated finger loop demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how small hands naturally grip and apply downward pressure, transforming what might be an awkward or potentially frustrating task into an accessible, confidence-building experience. The choice of a soft blue-green hue positions the object within color psychology frameworks that suggest calm, focus, and approachability, while simultaneously distinguishing it from surrounding kitchen elements to aid in identification and ownership. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the apparent balance between sufficient cutting capability and safety considerations, the rounded geometry and carefully considered edge treatment enabling food preparation while minimizing risk. The scene captured here, with its evidence of successful cutting demonstrated by neatly sliced strawberries and banana rounds, speaks to the design's functional achievement while the child's absorbed posture suggests the deeper accomplishment of meaningful engagement. This work invites consideration of how thoughtfully designed objects can expand the possibilities available to young people, fostering competence, participation, and the quiet satisfaction that emerges from contributing to shared household rituals. What role might early experiences of capability play in shaping a young person's sense of agency and confidence in approaching new challenges?

Production Technology
Made from stainless steel, Klyv ensures durability and safety while maintaining high product quality and attention to detail. Its handle is crafted from polypropylene, incorporating 30% wheat straw to reduce environmental impact. The 100% plastic-free kraft packaging reinforces its sustainable design. Klyv seamlessly blends functionality, elegance, and eco-conscious innovation, redefining safe and ergonomic kitchen tools for young learners.
Design Challenge
We faced significant challenges in maintaining a seamless connection between the blade and handle for a clean food cut. Factories resisted due to its complexity, often suggesting design changes or rejecting production. Ensuring viability for mass production while keeping costs affordable, without compromising quality, functionality, or durability, has been another major hurdle. Scaling this design proved far more complex than anticipated.
Project Duration
The project started in mid 2022 and finished january 2024
Operation Flow
The Klyv knife is carefully designed, focusing on the functionality and coordination of children aged two and above, both right-handed and left-handed. Recognizing that children are not yet familiar with the use of conventional knives and lack the necessary strength to cut effectively, this knife stands out for its ease of use and cleaning. It allows children to apply pressure safely with one or both hands, promoting the development of fine motor skills and independence in the kitchen from an early age. In summary, the Klyv knife is an accessible and effective tool for young ones on their path to culinary independence.
Research
We designed Klyv as an ergonomic knife for young children, aligning with their natural cutting instincts for safety, usability, and sustainability. Through prototyping and user testing with children aged 2 to 5, we confirmed its effectiveness allowing them to cut food by pressing down instead of sawing. Klyv polypropylene handle with 30% wheat straw and 100% plastic free kraft packaging reduce environmental impact while promoting motor skills, healthy eating, and family bonding.
Inspiration
Klyv was inspired by my experience as a mother witnessing my children's eagerness to join kitchen activities. I saw the need for a functional knife tailored for young users. My aim was to reduce the risks of traditional knives while promoting healthy eating, family bonding, and early culinary skills. Klyv empowers kids as young as two to safely participate in meal prep, enhancing motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and kitchen confidence
