Interviews
Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
Ba's Garden represents an innovative system designed for sustainable and effortless urban living, utilizing a soilless method coupled with a self-watering system. The project's inspiration stemmed from a transformative study trip undertaken during the first semester. This experience allowed us to delve deeply into the complex interplay between efficiency and life quality, as well as the impending challenges facing future farming practices, including urbanisation, threats of monoculture, and the global impacts of transportation.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Faced with the urgent need for a shift in human behaviour toward sustainability amid these challenges, I was motivated to find solutions. Ba's Garden, utilizing a grid tray system to foster continuous growth of plant roots, ensuring they receive high-quality nutrition in an efficient manner. The project envisions a future where cities and citizens can adapt by modifying resource usage and embracing self-sufficient gardening solutions within the constraints of space and time.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
Honestly, winning this award holds profound significance for me. I genuinely believe that, without the mentorship of my supervisor, Olof Kolte, this achievement wouldn't have been possible. His unwavering commitment to fostering a sustainable project environment has created a space where students, including myself, can explore and develop impactful ideas for the field. Looking ahead, this award serves as a validation of the innovative approach we've taken. It not only boosts my confidence but also enhances visibility in sustainable design efforts. I am eager to leverage this accomplishment to forge connections, collaborate with like-minded professionals, and continue making strides in the realm of sustainable design.
Grand Interview
Your innovative integration of automated hydroponic technology in Ba's Garden Compact Spouting Experience addresses urban farming challenges - could you elaborate on how this system achieves 25-50 percent faster growth while minimizing water and energy usage?
Ba's Garden's automated hydroponic system accelerates plant growth by 25–50% through precise nutrient delivery and optimized root aeration, eliminating soil-related growth limitations. The design uses minimal water by recirculating the nutrient solution, drastically reducing waste compared to traditional soil farming. Energy efficiency is achieved by integrating low-energy pumps and sustainable materials. This compact, self-watering system adapts to urban spaces, addressing resource constraints while ensuring faster and healthier plant development.
The earthenware composition of Ba's Garden Compact Spouting Experience demonstrates remarkable environmental adaptability - what inspired your choice of this material, and how does it specifically enhance the germination process for different seed types?
The choice of earthenware for Ba's Garden Compact Sprouting Experience stems from its natural, porous properties, which provide ideal moisture retention and aeration for seed germination. This material regulates water distribution, preventing oversaturation while maintaining consistent hydration. Its natural thermal insulation also creates a stable environment, aiding diverse seed types in sprouting effectively. Additionally, earthenware aligns with the sustainability ethos of the project, being eco-friendly and biodegradable. The inspiration comes from traditional farming practices, reimagined for modern urban spaces.
Your design of Ba's Garden Compact Spouting Experience seamlessly blends functionality with home décor - could you share the thought process behind creating an aesthetic that makes urban farming both accessible and visually appealing?
The design of Ba's Garden Compact Sprouting Experience focuses on combining functionality with aesthetics to make urban farming both accessible and visually appealing. The thought process behind the design was rooted in creating a piece that fits seamlessly into modern home décor. By using minimalist, natural materials and clean lines, the product serves as both a practical gardening solution and a stylish addition to any space, making it easy for urban dwellers to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives without sacrificing style.

- Production Technology
- This component, comprising low and high pots and a germination-friendly tray, is crafted from Earthenware for resilience against environmental and temperature variations, maintaining optimal moisture for small seeds. The tray facilitates sprouting, retaining water for germination. Its adaptable grid accommodates seeds of any size, ensuring gradual water provision throughout germination, making additional watering unnecessary. A self-sufficient system, it streamlines the growth process.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge in designing the project stems mainly from the intricacies of existing germination tools. The setup of these tools involves a diverse array of materials like soil, hydrated mats, LED lights, and spray cans, resulting in excessive water and material usage throughout the entire sprouting process. Additionally, it is challenging to find comprehensive kits for different seed sizes, posing an additional hurdle. Ensuring precise germination through various methods has proven difficult, especially during the Rinse and Drain cycles, where meticulous attention is essential to prevent the potential danger of bacterial contamination, which could rapidly escalate during the sprouting process.
- Research
- The project employs the following methods: problem identification, research, interviews, visual design, ceramics, and low-fi/high-fi prototyping.
- Inspiration
- Future farming demands adapting human behavior for environmental harmony. Urbanization harms ecosystems, large-scale farming imperils biodiversity. Sustainable cities require changed resource usage. Self-sufficient gardening addresses space constraints, mitigates food crises. Ba's Garden integrates farming into cities with automated hydroponics for eco-friendly, rapid microgreen growth. Accessible modular systems provide a transformative urban agriculture solution.
- Project Duration
