About Artscape Residential

Artscape is a residential interior design for a 336 square meter apartment. The design combines American classical style with simple contemporary elements to suit a family of six. The entrance hall is defined by cut marble graphics and carved mirrors set within decorative wall panels. Sea island wood flooring warms the open public area, where Roman columns, a fireplace and hand painted wallcoverings appear. A long table between the living room and the dining room forms a shared core area for the family.

Artscape Residential by Li Huei Wang represents a sophisticated engagement with contemporary residential design that honors classical decorative traditions while embracing the spatial fluidity and material refinement characteristic of current interior environments. The ornamental ceiling treatment, with its rhythmic sequence of molded curvilinear reliefs, evokes historical precedents in decorative plasterwork from neoclassical coffers to art nouveau organic ornament, yet the restraint of monochromatic execution and the regularity of patterning suggest contemporary parametric thinking and digital fabrication possibilities, bridging craft heritage and modern technology. The compositional achievement lies in the careful orchestration of competing visual demands: the strong horizontal emphasis of the elaborate ceiling plane, the vertical accents of fenestration and shelving, and the grounded horizontal mass of furnishings, all resolved through a sophisticated hierarchy that allows the eye to move fluidly between zones without confusion or monotony. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates exceptional control, building a foundation of warm neutrals that provide visual rest and spatial cohesion, then introducing carefully calibrated accents—the golden yellow pillows offering chromatic spark, the sage botanical drapery panels adding organic reference and cooling counterpoint, the metallic gold and bronze elements catching light and adding reflective animation—each color decision serving both aesthetic pleasure and spatial legibility. The layered window treatments exemplify technical accomplishment, combining functional light control with decorative richness: sheer translucent layers diffuse harsh daylight into gentle ambient glow, while the heavier figured panels introduce pattern, texture, and cultural reference through their hand-painted or printed botanical imagery depicting birds amid flowering branches, a motif with deep roots in both Eastern and Western decorative arts traditions. The spatial narrative suggested by the composition invites contemplation of domestic life as choreographed experience, movement from intimate seating zones to more formal dining or work areas, the threshold marked not by walls but by furniture arrangement and material transition, reflecting contemporary preferences for open planning and visual connectivity across functional zones. The integration of organic elements—fresh floral arrangements in white and cream tones, botanical imagery on textile surfaces, the biomorphic ceiling forms themselves—suggests a design philosophy that seeks to bring natural reference and softness into geometric architectural frameworks, tempering modernity's crisp edges with organic curves and living materials. The lighting strategy reveals layered intentionality: natural illumination provides baseline ambient quality and temporal variation throughout the day, supplemented by accent task lighting in the table lamp and atmospheric decorative lighting in the chandelier, creating flexibility for different activities and moods while maintaining overall warmth and visual comfort. How does the careful balance between ornamental richness and restrained material palette create an environment that feels both visually stimulating and emotionally restful, and what might this suggest about contemporary desires for domestic spaces that offer both aesthetic interest and psychological sanctuary?

Production Technology
According to the owner's personality and preferences, the design tends to American classical style. As a result, there are both classic Roman columns in the space, but also the integration of wall cloth with eastern colors, and round stools, etc., combining eastern and western elements in this case, to form a diversified and rich space experience.
Design Challenge
In this case, the roof beam is low, which worries that the local space will appear depressed; therefore, the classical wire plate is used to cover the beam, and then the mirrors are installed above the foyer to achieve the dual effects of weakening the presence of the beam and enlarging the space height. Moreover, in response to the fact that the dining room is not in the window area, and the natural lighting is relatively insufficient, a mirror is installed on the wall, which not only magnifies the visual space, but also facilitates the reflection of light and makes the environment brighter.
Project Duration
The project started in 2018 and finished in February 2020 in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The owner's family cohesion is quite strong, which is a family of six people like to share each other's life; even if they do their own things, they are used to sitting together. Therefore, in addition to planning the public area as an open layout, a long table is arranged between the living room and the dining room to create a "family core area" as the main interaction space for family members.
Research
The classical style often uses the "foyer" to decorate; in addition to separate the spaces, it also is a medium, which is installed under the roof beam, so as to modify the sense of abruptness and beautify the space. Therefore, when facing the beam running through the public area, the invisible effect is achieved by designing a foyer, and because of the foyer design, the original height of the ceiling is maintained to avoid a sense of pressure.
Inspiration
The house owner in this case likes the elegance and rich visual presentation of the classical style, but also needs to meet the different needs of the family members. Thus, on the basis of classical style, it integrates the children's expectations of simple and contemporary elements, to create a modern style of American classical home. The public area is deliberately planned to adopt an open layout, and create a "family core area" where everyone can sit together at the same time.
