About Flutter Chapters Residence

Flutter Chapters is a residential interior design for a young couple in Taiwan. The home of 120 square meters was changed from four rooms to three, and one room became a dressing room that enlarges the master bedroom. A wall behind the sofa has a small corner removed to suggest the turning of a page, and an open shelf beside it holds personal objects. Rounded walls and door frames follow a wabi-sabi approach. A kitchen island replaces the dining table for daily use and social gatherings. Solid wood veneers, cabinetry and laminate flooring in earthy tones create a warm atmosphere.

Flutter Chapters Residence emerges from a design philosophy that honors the marriage of minimalist restraint and sensory warmth, positioning itself within contemporary residential interior design discourse that seeks to transcend mere aesthetic minimalism by infusing spaces with tactile richness and atmospheric depth, the work demonstrates sophisticated command of tonal orchestration, restricting the chromatic palette to an earth-tone spectrum that ranges from warm sienna and ochre through taupe and greige to cooler concrete tones, achieving visual cohesion through analogous color relationships while avoiding monotony through strategic textural variation, the compositional achievement lies particularly in the calibrated spatial sequence that unfolds from foreground to background, the plush leather sofa at left establishing a zone of tactile comfort and visual weight that anchors the composition, its tufted surface and organic creasing suggesting both quality craftsmanship and lived-in warmth, the middle ground occupied by a sculptural dining ensemble of rich walnut or similar hardwood, the circular table and organically formed stools creating a constellation of rounded forms that soften the rectilinear geometry dominating the space, above this gathering point suspends a ribbed pendant fixture whose horizontal laminations echo the layered spatial organization while casting gentle focused illumination, the background punctured by a gracefully proportioned rounded arch, a formal gesture that invokes Mediterranean architectural heritage while functioning as a compositional device that draws the eye through successive thresholds toward softly illuminated depths, suggesting the promise of discovery and the layering of private and semi-private domestic realms, the material palette demonstrates commitment to authenticity and natural expression, genuine leather aging with character, solid wood displaying inherent grain patterns, plastered surfaces maintaining slight textural variation that catches light subtly, stone or concrete contributing cool mineral presence, engineered wood flooring providing warmth underfoot, this residence seems to explore the phenomenology of domestic dwelling, how spatial proportion, material character, and atmospheric quality combine to create environments that support contemplation, connection, and restoration, the restrained aesthetic language allowing the essential qualities of materials and light to speak without ornamental interference, the work invites consideration of how contemporary design might achieve warmth and humanity within minimalist frameworks, how spaces can feel both refined and welcoming, both curated and livable, how the careful orchestration of tone, texture, and light creates atmospheres that transcend mere visual appeal to offer genuine sensory and psychological comfort, encouraging viewers to contemplate the relationships between material choices and emotional resonance, between spatial organization and the rhythms of daily life, between aesthetic restraint and sensory richness in the contemporary home.

Unique Properties
The design behind the sofa wall symbolizes the beginning of a new life chapter. A small corner is removed to represent the turning of a page, adding dynamism to the space. The open shelf in this area holds memorabilia, while the wall separates social and private zones, making daily life feel like the turning of a book page. The rounded walls and door frames, embodying the wabi-sabi style, create a cave-like feeling, offering security. The dining area was redefined as a versatile kitchen island, blending functionality with fluidity, ensuring a flexible and practical space.
Dimensions & Packaging
The site is 120 square meters. It has been changed from 4 rooms, 1 living room, 1 dining room, and 2 bathrooms to 3 rooms, 1 living room, 1 dining room, and 2 bathrooms. The main axis of the design revolves around the lifestyle of the residents, emphasizing the balance between practicality and aesthetics. The designer converted the original 4 rooms into 3 rooms. One of the rooms was converted into a dressing room to enlarge the master bedroom. The kitchen island replaces the dining table to provide a more versatile context and improve space utilization.

Production Technology
Solid wood veneers, woodwork cabinetry, and laminate flooring with matte special paint. Earthy tones create a natural and warm atmosphere. The designer used natural elements such as wood and special paint materials with natural textures. Milky brown walls and wooden furniture create a soft and natural atmosphere. Warm beige and light brown harmonize the whole space, filling it with comfort and calmness.
Design Challenge
The wabi-sabi style has a wide range of expressions. The designer needed to strike a balance between grandeur, beauty, and art. After repeated communication and coordination, the design meets the needs of the living space but does not become overly artistic. In terms of spatial proportion and layout adjustment, the designer removed the bathroom compartment and enlarged it. The change involved rearranging the piping, and the designer needed to precisely balance the proportions to ensure the functionality and comfort of each area.
Project Duration
The project finished in November 2024 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The hostess is delighted with the kitchen island's versatility, noting that it serves not only for daily activities and coffee making but also as the core for social gatherings with friends. She finds its size and design practical and perfect for everyday needs. The host is equally pleased with the spacious, comfortable bathroom, particularly the bathtub, which is ideal for couples to relax together. He also appreciates the thoughtful layout connecting the master bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom, providing both convenience and functionality.
Research
'Flutter Chapters' draws inspiration from books, symbolizing the new chapter in a young couple's life. The designer used a 'turning of the page' concept with wabi-sabi elements. The warm milky brown palette, combined with wood and textured materials, creates a comfortable, natural atmosphere. The layout shifted from four rooms to three, focusing on practicality and aesthetics. The kitchen island replaces a traditional dining table, offering multifunctional use. The smooth circulation ensures easy access to all functional areas, making the space ideal for daily family life.
Inspiration
The design for this home was inspired by the needs and preferences of a young couple, symbolizing the start of a new chapter in their lives. A wall, representing the 'turning of the page,' captures this concept. The circular design reflects their anticipation for the future, embracing dynamism and continuity. With a preference for wabi-sabi, the designer incorporated earthy tones and natural elements like wood and textures. The result is a warm, cozy, and functional space, thoughtfully designed to meet the long-term needs of the residents.
