About Astoria Collection Tableware

A regal collection inspired by Queen Victoria's reign, Astoria transports you back to a time of grandeur, offering a collection that exudes opulence and timeless charm. Radiating sophistication with its ornate silhouette, Astoria is a statement piece in pure white. The sculpted shapes channel the grace of the Victorian era while blending minimalism with modern sophistication. Each piece is meticulously sculpted with intricate detailing and finished with a lustrous glaze, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Astoria combines opulence with practicality, bringing regal splendor to the table.

The Astoria Collection Tableware by Luzerne Pte Ltd emerges from a distinguished lineage of porcelain craft that has long celebrated the transformation of functional dining vessels into objects of contemplative beauty, positioning itself within traditions that understand tableware as essential architecture for human gathering and nourishment rituals. This collection demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the formal language of classical European decorative arts while articulating a contemporary restraint that allows the inherent qualities of fine bone porcelain to speak with quiet authority through its luminous ivory surfaces and precisely executed scalloped silhouettes that create visual rhythm without excessive ornamentation. The technical achievement evident in the consistent undulation of each plate rim speaks to manufacturing precision married with design intentionality, where the graduated sizing of the stacked pieces creates natural hierarchy guiding both practical use and aesthetic appreciation from charger to dinner plate to salad plate to bread plate in harmonious progression. Thematic resonances activate around enduring human desires to honor sustenance through material beauty, to mark meals as occasions worthy of attention and care, and to create environments where breaking bread becomes ceremonial rather than merely functional. The chromatic relationship between the warm ivory porcelain and the surrounding gold-toned elements including the textured charger plate, ornate flatware, and embroidered textile establishes visual warmth suggesting candlelit intimacy and the golden hour of hospitality. References to baroque decorative vocabulary appear in the scalloped forms and the ornate surrounding elements, yet the collection maintains elegant restraint appropriate to contemporary sensibilities that favor suggestion over excess. What might the careful curation of table appointments reveal about how societies across time have understood the relationship between material beauty and the sacred ordinary act of sharing meals together?

Production Technology
Astoria is crafted from Luzerne's signature blend of clay sourced from Dehua, China, known for its purity and durability. This clay is the ideal base, bringing resilience and an elegant aesthetic to each piece. The production involves hand moulding, followed by the creation of a plaster master mould. Our specially formulated clay is then shaped using a casting technique that integrates both manpower and machinery. Each piece is meticulously sculpted with intricate detailing and finished with a lustrous glaze. The glazing process combines automated equipment and skilled handwork to ensure a clean, consistent finish. This resists stains and scratches, ensuring lasting elegance and functionality.
Design Challenge
The greatest challenge in designing the Astoria Collection was striking a balance between intricate Victorian-era embossing and modern subtlety. Researching and recreating historical designs was difficult, as deep embossing from the past needed refinement to provide a contemporary aesthetic. Achieving this delicate balance posed production challenges as it demanded precision and finesse. We overcame these obstacles by blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, ensuring the designs remained detailed yet understated.
Project Duration
The project started in October 2023 and finished in January 2024 in Singapore.
Operation Flow
Users operate the tableware by placing food or beverages on/in the objects, such as plates, bowls, or cups. Its operation is simple and intuitive, designed for serving and consuming food. Astoria transforms in its use and presentation. Items can be stacked for storage, and used interchangeably . For example, bowls can be served on different plates, and cups can be paired with different saucers depending on the setting. Astoria’s pronounced shapes ensure comfortable handling and stability when in use, whether for dining or serving.
Research
For this project, the research was on the rich opulence of the Victorian era, with a particular focus on its timeless aesthetic and ornate detailing. Research was conducted to study the elaborate silhouettes characteristic of the period, which formed Astoria’s intricate shapes. Careful consideration was given to accessories that complement the collection, ensuring a cohesive and elegant design.
Inspiration
Inspired by the refined sophistication during Queen Victoria’s reign, Astoria transports you back to a time of grandeur and grace, offering a collection that exudes opulence and timeless charm. A statement piece in pure white, perfect for a noble, celebratory atmosphere, each piece captures the elegance and intricate detailing of Victorian decorative arts.
