About Yenikoy House Interior Design
Yenikoy House is a residential interior design project located in Istanbul, Turkey. The home covers 250 square meters and includes an 80 square meter terrace. The layout has four rooms, with two bedrooms, a gym area, a living area and a kitchen. The design is shaped around the city view, so residents can sense the surrounding city from inside. The furniture was kept simple to keep the focus on the view outside. Tadelakt, a natural and breathable ecological material, was applied to the walls and the ceiling.
Chiara de Rocchi's Yenikoy House Interior Design engages the enduring residential design challenge of balancing openness with intimacy, transparency with enclosure, visual abundance with serene simplicity, demonstrating how contemporary spatial practice synthesizes diverse modernist lineages into coherent domestic environments that serve both practical daily life and aesthetic contemplation. The design reflects a sophisticated understanding of spatial flow principles emerging from early twentieth-century open-plan explorations, particularly the dissolution of rigid room compartmentalization pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie houses and refined through mid-century California Case Study houses, yet tempers radical openness with subtle spatial zoning through furniture arrangement, level changes implied by varied ceiling treatments, and strategic vertical elements like the freestanding fireplace mass that suggests boundaries without imposing barriers. The material palette demonstrates remarkable discipline, restricting primary surfaces to a carefully calibrated range of warm blonde wood tones, soft neutral textiles, and matte white architectural planes, a restraint that paradoxically creates richness through subtle variation within narrow chromatic and tonal ranges rather than through diverse material contrast, aligning with Scandinavian design traditions that celebrate the intrinsic beauty of natural materials allowed to express their authentic character without excessive finish or ornamentation. The integration of exterior landscape through extensive glazing reflects phenomenological approaches to dwelling that understand buildings as mediating membranes between human habitation and natural environment rather than as sealed protective shells, inviting daylight penetration, seasonal variation awareness, and psychological connection to place beyond the physical interior boundaries, while the verdant hillside visible beyond suggests perhaps Mediterranean or temperate maritime coastal context where indoor-outdoor living possibilities extend across seasons. The furnishing strategy reveals sophisticated editorial restraint, selecting fewer objects of higher sculptural and material quality rather than filling the space with abundant elements, allowing each piece to occupy its spatial territory with authority while maintaining generous circulation zones and visual breathing room, particularly evident in the biomorphic black side table whose molecular or cellular formal language introduces organic complexity within the prevailing orthogonal spatial geometry. The bookcase system visible in the background, with its angular black ladder rails creating dynamic diagonal vectors, demonstrates how functional storage infrastructure can serve simultaneously as spatial punctuation and compositional drama, animating the background zone while maintaining openness through skeletal rather than solid construction, perhaps referencing industrial warehouse aesthetics adapted to residential contexts through material refinement and proportional calibration. The chromatic accents distributed across the coffee table surface, including the vibrant pink vessel, saturated red book cover, and cobalt blue spherical object, function as carefully orchestrated color notes within the neutral field, demonstrating the designer's understanding that in restrained environments, small chromatic gestures achieve disproportionate visual impact, guiding the eye across spatial depth while providing moments of visual delight and personal expression within the disciplined overall composition. The ceiling plane treatment, revealing both recessed linear lighting channels and angular cuts suggesting varied ceiling heights or structural expression, indicates spatial complexity developed vertically as well as horizontally, creating volumetric interest and suggesting that the design extends three-dimensionally beyond what the single viewpoint reveals, inviting speculation about additional spatial layers, mezzanine possibilities, or structural expression as decorative motif. What conception of contemporary dwelling does this environment propose, and how do the specific material choices, spatial relationships, and lighting conditions shape daily inhabitation patterns and psychological experience of home?
