About Light Operator Precise Cell Sorting
Light Operator is a cell sorting instrument developed for biomedical laboratories. The instrument uses optoelectronic dielectrophoresis to sort cells without damage. High resolution imaging, real time algorithms and visual graphics support precise cell identification. A translucent flip top cover protects the internal optical and electronic parts and allows the sorting process to be observed. The surface is made of PB material with an electroplated silver gray finish, and the housing is machined by CNC with discreet screws. The instrument measures 780 by 597 by 536 millimeters.
Beihang University's Light Operator Precise Cell Sorting represents a distinguished achievement within the evolving field of scientific instrument design, where the imperatives of technical performance must harmonize with considerations of user experience, laboratory aesthetics, and operational clarity. This instrument exemplifies the contemporary movement toward humanizing advanced research equipment, acknowledging that scientists and technicians who interact daily with such apparatus benefit from thoughtfully considered form language that communicates function, inspires confidence, and integrates gracefully within modern laboratory environments. The design team appears to have engaged deeply with the phenomenology of scientific practice, understanding that the ritual of lifting the transparent canopy to access the sorting chamber carries both practical and psychological dimensions, transforming a functional necessity into an elegant gestural interaction. The chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated restraint, employing a predominantly neutral metallic palette that suggests precision, cleanliness, and technological authority while reserving chromatic intensity for functional communication through the warm red operational illumination and cool cyan status indication. This approach recalls strategies employed in medical imaging equipment and aerospace instrumentation, where visual hierarchy must remain unambiguous even in demanding operational contexts. The sculptural quality of the housing, with its flowing compound curves and seamless surface transitions, suggests organic integration of complex internal systems within a unified external envelope, perhaps evoking automotive or consumer electronics design languages that prioritize perceived quality and tactile refinement. The transparent hood material creates a fascinating dialogue between revelation and protection, allowing visual access to the precision optical components within while maintaining necessary environmental isolation. Viewers might contemplate how such instruments embody the aspirations of contemporary research: the pursuit of knowledge made manifest through tools that honor both scientific rigor and human sensibility.

- Design Challenge
- In-depth exploration of the complex behavioral patterns of laboratory users to design products that meet their needs is a formidable challenge. It requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating expertise from various fields and a deep understanding of user behavior. Creating a delightful user experience involves extensive research and testing to address emotional responses and habitual actions. Coordinating the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including experts from optics, software engineering, and design, adds another layer of complexity. Moreover, balancing between innovation and practicality is essential to ensure that new technologies address real-world problems while also aligning with market demands and expectations.
- Project Duration
- The project was initiated in Beijing in October 2022, completed in Beijing in September 2024, and released to the market in June 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Users begin by interacting with an external device to initiate the Light Operator, which prompts the system to perform a self-check to ensure that all sensors and optical components are functioning properly. Next, users log into the system and configure the sorting parameters based on their experimental needs, such as the target cells type and sorting conditions.
The user then opens the transparent rotating cover, places the cell sample into the device, and starts the sorting process through the external interface. During the process, users can monitor the real-time status through the translucent cover, while the device automatically records the screening data.
Upon completion, the device will automatically stop and notify the user, who can then retrieve the screening results for data analysis. Subsequently, the user can collect the sorted cell samples and perform routine cleaning and maintenance on the device. If required, users can choose to export the sorting data to an external storage device or upload it to a server. Throughout the entire operation, users can clearly view the device's operational status and monitor the time required for each step, ensuring a seamless and transparent process. - Research
- The design project, led by Beihang University, aims to enhance cell screening in medical experiments using innovative optoelectronic technologies.
