About Eclipse Residence
Eclipse is the interior design of a two-story house of 95.8 square meters in Taiwan. The home holds a living room, a dining room, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The concept is drawn from a total solar eclipse. Dark wood veneer is the main material, and linear lighting forms a soft halo effect. The staircase beside the entrance shifts from dark veneer to warm wood grain, glass and white paint, ending at a window. A television wall rotates 360 degrees, and the kitchen island extends into a dining table, linking the kitchen, dining room and living room.
AN.J studio's Eclipse Residence emerges from contemporary interior design traditions that privilege material authenticity, spatial fluidity, and the integration of architectural form with residential function, demonstrating particular resonance with movements emphasizing craft-forward minimalism and the expressive potential of natural materials deployed within rigorously composed environments. The compositional achievement rests significantly in the sophisticated handling of the vertical walnut slat screen element, which functions simultaneously as room divider, visual anchor, sculptural presence, and framing device, its rhythmic repetition creating measured cadence while maintaining transparency and visual connection across spatial zones, the alternating solid-void pattern generating dynamic optical effect as one moves through the space and viewing angles shift. The curved ceiling element represents notable formal innovation, its sweeping arc introducing organic counterpoint to the predominant orthogonal geometry while the concealed linear lighting transforms architectural form into luminous presence, the name Eclipse finding material expression in this crescent-shaped illuminated band suggesting celestial phenomena translated into built form. - The staircase to the left of the entrance is a focal point in the space. Designed to evoke the progression of dawn, the materials transition from dark wood veneer to warm wood grain, glass, and white paint, symbolizing light's path. The view culminates at a window, where daylight meets the eye. Another key feature is the dual-directional relationship between the kitchen island and the TV wall, which rotates 360 degrees to connect the space. The kitchen island links the kitchen, dining room, and living room, creating a cohesive flow throughout the home.

- The two-story, 20-year-old house is 95.8 square meters with a living room, a dining room, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
The layout is significantly altered by relocating the kitchen to be closer to the living room. A rotating TV wall blurs the boundaries between the kitchen, dining room, and living room, enhancing the flow. The staircase is redirected, encouraging movement into the social area before leading upstairs, which fosters greater interaction among family members. In the color scheme, the designers utilized dark wood veneer as the main color to create a sense of sophistication and elegance. The combination of linear lighting and ambient lighting formed a halo effect, reminiscent of a solar eclipse, adding depth and dimension to the space. The fluorinated glass above the staircase concealed the light fixtures while reflecting a soft glow, further enhancing the depth of field. Amid the interplay of light and shadow, one could almost sense the natural trajectory. - Design Challenge
- The staircase was reconfigured, and all old pipelines were replaced to ensure the new design was seamlessly aligned with the existing structure. Adding new rooms and expanding the kitchen required precise positioning of the staircase to maximize space and maintain smooth circulation. With only 52.8 square meters per floor, creating functional rooms and a study without making the area feel cramped posed significant challenges. Additionally, the complexity of materials like fluorinated glass and stone required careful selection and installation, extending the construction timeline.

- The homeowners were highly satisfied with the design, particularly appreciating the open-plan connection between the kitchen and dining area, which enhanced interaction and flexibility. The expanded kitchen offered more storage, meeting the family's daily cooking and organization needs. Whether in the kitchen, at the island, or around the dining table, family members could interact while engaging in different activities. The 360-degree rotating TV wall also contributed to the convenience of daily life, linking various functional areas and fostering a true sense of connection in the social spaces.

The theme is the light coming out from the darkness. Functionally, according to the owner's needs, the designers rearranged the kitchen circulation on the premise of creating a new room.
