About Hong Kong Book Fair 2024 Event Organization Space
Hong Kong Book Fair 2024 is an event design created for a seven-day book fair held at an exhibition centre in Hong Kong. The fair covered more than 55,000 square metres and hosted 760 exhibitors and over 600 events. The theme was film and television literature. A 900 square metre art gallery linked books and screen works through display panels, antique books, manuscripts and newspapers. Interactive features included a literature game, an eBook kiosk, an AI photo booth and a mini theatre with LED screens. A reusable aluminium structure and a modular display system were used.
Event Organization Space by Hong Kong Trade Development Council demonstrates sophisticated spatial branding through architectural display systems that transform the conventional exhibition environment into a dynamic cultural threshold, engaging visitors through layered visual communication that balances monumental typographic presence with intimate photographic portraiture, situating this design within contemporary exhibition architecture traditions that prioritize modular flexibility, visual impact, and brand identity while maintaining cultural accessibility and institutional authority, the compositional achievement rests upon asymmetrical balance orchestrating three primary vertical display structures across the visual field, establishing rhythmic progression and spatial depth through overlapping planes, angular orientation, and strategic illumination that guides visitor circulation while creating focal moments of concentrated visual intensity, chromatic sophistication emerges through restrained palette deployment emphasizing charcoal architectural framework against warm amber internal illumination with punctuating passages of saturated red, orange, blue, and purple that activate specific graphic zones without overwhelming the overall tonal coherence, technical facility manifests in the integration of structural support, lighting infrastructure, and graphic application, achieving seamless unity where functional display apparatus recedes in service of content presentation while maintaining its own sculptural presence as space-defining element, the modular display units suggest adaptable exhibition systems capable of reconfiguration across multiple events and spatial contexts, demonstrating design intelligence that prioritizes both immediate visual impact and operational flexibility across varied programming needs, thematic content celebrates literary and cultural engagement, evidenced through the photographic portraiture suggesting author presentations or cultural figures and the dense typographic treatments functioning simultaneously as information architecture and graphic art, the space invites contemplation of how exhibition design mediates between institutional mission and public accessibility, creating environments that honor content seriousness while projecting contemporary vitality and welcoming atmosphere, formal choices serve expressive ends through the deliberate contrast between austere black structural vocabulary and vibrant illuminated graphics, suggesting the relationship between enduring institutional framework and dynamic cultural content it supports and showcases, the vertical emphasis of the primary display units introduces aspirational dimensionality, drawing the eye upward and suggesting cultural elevation while the human-scale photographic elements maintain approachable intimacy, passages of particular accomplishment include the central backlit display where geometric red forms, layered typography, and portrait photography achieve complex visual density without confusion, demonstrating sophisticated information hierarchy and graphic integration, the angular orientation of the leftmost display unit creates dynamic spatial energy, breaking orthogonal predictability and suggesting movement, discovery, and progressive revelation as visitors navigate the environment, the design participates in exhibition architecture traditions extending from world exposition pavilions through contemporary museum gallery design and trade fair temporary structures, synthesizing influences from branded retail environments, cultural institution wayfinding systems, and festival infrastructure to create a hybrid typology specific to large-scale public literary and cultural events, the work invites viewers to consider how spatial design shapes cultural experience, asking what emotional and intellectual atmospheres support meaningful public engagement with literary and artistic content, and how architecture, graphics, lighting, and materials combine to create environments that feel simultaneously serious and celebratory, institutional and accessible, permanent and ephemeral, monumental and intimate.

- Production Technology
- To create a museum-like atmosphere for the Art Gallery Exhibition, the organizer designed informative display panels showcasing various literary authors. Interactive elements included a literature gallery game, an eBook kiosk, and an AI photo booth with their favorite book characters, enhancing their experience. A Mini Theatre with floor mounted LED screen and highly reflective flared wall design further enriched the view with classic movie scenes, blending text and imagery for an immersive experience. This fusion of visual storytelling and design offered visitors a unique encounter with Film and TV literature.
- Design Challenge
- In addition to the extensive preparation required for book selection and Film/TV copyright and intellectual property clearance, we faced the challenge of managing a high volume of daily visitors while preventing bottlenecks inside and outside the Art Gallery. To address this, the organizer worked closely with the special events and operations teams. Conducting a thorough traffic study and strategic layout planning were essential to ensure smooth visitor movement and an enjoyable experience throughout the exhibition.
- Project Duration
- HKTDC dedicated five months from project kickoff to onsite completion. The HK Book Fair successfully launched from July 17 to 22, 2024, spanning seven exciting days. Held at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai, our design transformed the venue into an engaging space that celebrated literature and community. Each element was carefully crafted to enhance the visitor experience, ensuring a vibrant and memorable event for all attendees.
- Operation Flow
- The layout was crafted with dynamic, modular spaces that encouraged exploration and interaction. It started with an Instagrammable photo spot at the entrance to entice visitors. Following this, physical displays showcased books, newspapers, and collectible manuscripts, creating a rich visual experience. The journey continued with interactive elements like an e-literature game, an AI photo booth, and a mini theatre, ensuring a captivating experience that engaged attendees throughout the entire space.
- Research
- To effectively support the annual theme of the Book Fair—Hong Kong Film and TV literature—the organizer curated a diverse selection of display materials, including official posters and movie clips, to enhance the three thematic zones. This effort involved careful navigation of copyright and intellectual property clearance, requiring extensive preparation. Close collaboration with the event team was crucial to ensure successful licensing clearance, allowing them to create a cohesive and engaging exhibition that celebrated the intersection of literature and film.
- Inspiration
- For the HKTDC Book Fair 2024, themed around Film and Television Literature, the organizer created an engaging art gallery that connected literature and film/TV. The vibrant exhibition featured iconic works from the featured writer of the year, spotlight director, and classic literature adaptations. This design highlighted the creative synergy between these mediums and invited visitors to explore narratives in a visually stimulating space. Each element was carefully curated to enhance the experience, encouraging exploration and fostering a deeper appreciation for storytelling across various formats.
