About Ori Floor Lamp
Ori is a floor lamp influenced by Japanese origami, where Ori signifies folding. Constructed from a single sheet of recyclable aluminum, it features a streamlined and sustainable design without the need for welding. The top section is folded in reverse to create a seamlessly integrated lampshade. With a height of 35 inches and a compact base, Ori delivers soft, glare-free illumination suitable for reading while remaining easy to reposition. Departing from conventional geometric structures, the design achieves a refined balance between functionality and aesthetics.
Lincoln Chen's Ori Floor Lamp, recipient of the Silver A' Design Award in Lighting Products and Fixtures Design, exemplifies the contemporary pursuit of expressive minimalism within functional object categories. The work emerges from a design tradition that honors material authenticity and manufacturing precision while seeking formal innovation through subtle manipulation of expected geometries. The lamp head's softly rounded quadrilateral form suggests the influence of both organic modernism and the Japanese concept of soft-edged geometry, where mathematical forms undergo gentle transformation through human intervention. Technically, the piece demonstrates exceptional command of metal finishing processes, with the uniformly granular surface texture evidencing sophisticated sandblasting or bead-blasting techniques that transform industrial aluminum into a surface of contemplative beauty. The chromatic decision to introduce a vivid red power cable against otherwise neutral metallic tones represents a confident gesture of visual punctuation, transforming a functional necessity into a compositional element of considerable expressive power. This approach recalls strategies employed across design disciplines where infrastructure elements become celebrated rather than concealed. The curved stem's transition into the angled head achieves a biomimetic quality, suggesting botanical analogues without literal reference, perhaps the stem-to-leaf junction of certain aquatic plants or the graceful inclination of a flower head. Such formal choices position the work within broader conversations about the relationship between designed objects and natural forms, a dialogue central to sustainable design philosophy and biophilic interior thinking. Viewers might contemplate how this single detail image invites meditation on the relationship between utility and beauty, and how the most functional elements of contemporary life might embody aesthetic intention.

- Design Challenge
- The most challenging aspect of this design was achieving an elegant and minimalist form while minimizing material use and manufacturing complexity. Lincoln needed to ensure that the folded structure provided both stability and production efficiency. External challenges included material selection, production limitations, and optimizing the form for easy transport. Internal challenges involved in-depth research on origami principles and adapting them to metal fabrication.
- Project Duration
- This project began drafting in September 2024 and is currently in the prototyping phase. The design location for the project is in Pasadena, California.
- Operation Flow
- Lincoln's design is inspired by Japanese origami. The art of origami, which transforms flat sheets of paper into three-dimensional, full forms, left a deep impression on him. It revealed how a simple medium can be transformed into countless variations using clever techniques. He applied this concept in the design of the Ori floor lamp. With just simple folds, the Ori transforms a single sheet of metal into an elegant lighting fixture.
- Research
- Lincoln conducted extensive form studies for this project, aiming to create an elegant and minimalist design while using the least amount of material possible. Inspired by origami, he experimented with high-GSM paper to develop the form. By creating models in various shapes and sizes, he arrived at a refined final design. This form optimizes material usage and manufacturing efficiency, is easy to transport, and achieves a balance of simplicity and visual interest.
- Inspiration
- Lincoln aimed to design a lighting fixture with an elegant and minimalist form that is easy to produce and transport while utilizing a single material whenever possible. Drawing inspiration from Japanese origami, he explored how simple folds could transform a flat sheet of material into a three-dimensional and visually engaging structure.
