About Cobble Bluetooth Speaker

Cobble is a Bluetooth bookshelf speaker with an interactive interface on the top surface. Four magnetic pegs can be placed in different patterns on a grid. When a preset pattern is completed, the speaker plays a saved sound profile, such as a nature or white noise loop. Cobble also works as a normal Bluetooth speaker for audio from a connected device. The placing of pegs recalls the board game Go and invites a short moment of quiet concentration. The prototype uses a wooden casing, sand-blasted acrylic panels and LED light strips.

Eric Wu's Cobble Bluetooth Speaker represents a thoughtful contribution to contemporary consumer electronics design, engaging with ongoing dialogues around material authenticity, technological accessibility, and the domestic integration of digital devices within residential environments, the work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of product semantics through its deliberate juxtaposition of warm natural wood enclosure and cool luminous interactive surface, a material strategy that appears to negotiate between competing demands of technological functionality and human-centered tactile comfort, the wooden chassis crafted from what appears to be sustainably sourced light hardwood veneer over engineered substrate construction exhibits the fine linear grain patterns and subtle color variation characteristic of carefully selected natural materials, this choice seemingly positioning the speaker within design traditions that privilege craft, materiality, and honest construction methods descended from Scandinavian functionalism and Japanese mingei craft philosophies, yet the design transcends nostalgic reference through its integration of contemporary LED technology manifesting as the striking color-gradient illuminated panel that dominates the top surface, this glowing field transitioning through mint, turquoise, and cobalt hues suggests responsive interface capability while creating visual intrigue that elevates functional object into aesthetic statement, the perforated surface pattern of circular apertures serves multiple functions simultaneously, providing acoustic transparency for sound projection, creating tactile interface points for user interaction, and establishing rhythmic visual texture that animates the composition, the four raised white cylindrical elements emerging from select apertures read as control affordances, their soft rounded tops and subtle metallic base rings suggesting premium detailing and inviting fingertip engagement, while the dual front-facing speaker drivers with their dark concave grilles provide necessary acoustic output with restrained visual presence that allows the illuminated top plane to command primary attention, the overall formal language suggests influences from Dieter Rams' ten principles of good design particularly the emphasis on minimal intervention, appropriate material selection, and environmental harmony, while the compact rectangular proportions and rounded corner treatment recall the approachable geometry of Naoto Fukasawa's super-normal design philosophy seeking to create objects that feel simultaneously familiar and quietly innovative, the design seems to explore how technology can inhabit domestic space without dominating it, how functional objects might contribute to ambient environment through considered form and carefully orchestrated material presence, the color-shifting illumination introduces dynamic temporal dimension suggesting the device possesses responsive intelligence or mood-adaptive capability, transforming static object into ambient presence that might subtly shift with usage patterns, music selection, or environmental conditions, this integration of material warmth, geometric clarity, and technological sophistication positions the Cobble Bluetooth Speaker within contemporary design discourse around humanizing technology, making digital devices more approachable through familiar materials and refined proportions that respect human scale, the work invites consideration of how we might design technological objects that enhance rather than intrude upon lived space, that provide functional service while contributing aesthetic value, that balance innovation with timelessness, might this synthesis of natural materiality and digital capability suggest pathways toward more sustainable, more human-centered, more aesthetically integrated technological futures.

Unique Properties
Cobble is a speaker with an interactive interface at the top. The user has access to 4 pegs that they can place in various patterns. When preset patterns connect, the speaker plays a saved tone. The speaker is made with the concept of "inadvertent mindfulness." Studies have found that the simple action of concentrating on one's actions offer moments of respite. By placing pegs, much like how one places stones in a Go game, the user enjoys a moment of peace.

Production Technology
The prototype was constructed with a wooden casing with a four-panel construction. Sand-blasted acrylic panels are used to diffuse the lighting from LED light strips. The prototype control panel was made from an Arduino nano and will be replaced with more efficient chips in mass production. We experimented with various sensing methods and settled on magnetic sensing with Hall effect sensors as they appeared to be the most reliable.
Design Challenge
The hardest part was figuring out the sweet spot of a big enough surface area and a compact enough footprint, the product being a shelf speaker after all. People wanted to engage with the interface but too much of it offered diminishing returns and research participants had more complaints of space constraints.
Project Duration
Duration: 6 months
Location: Rhode Island, United States
Operation Flow
The product behaves like a normal bluetooth speaker, so the user can connect to it with an end device and play whatever they want.

The unique interaction is that it can save and activate various sound profiles, which can be activated via placement of the magnetic pegs. The user would have to download a mobile app to change the default profiles, which are nature and white noise sound loops.
Research
User research was conducted in collaboration with co-working spaces. We tested hypotheses like the following:
- How much spacing and how big do people prefer the pegs to be
- How many rows and columns work the best, offering novelty and comfort without overloading the user
- What footprint works the best without sacrificing too much room for interaction
Inspiration
The design originated in a desire to question the prevalence of active mindfulness practices today. We have meditation apps, mindfulness sessions offered by corporations, and many more. While mindfulness is great, there are alternative activities that humans go to for similar purposes, without bearing the label of "mindfulness." Go, the Asian board game using stones, was a primary inspiration. What if we could have something built in that stimulates a sense of mindfulness, just like Go?
