About Pavilion Large Scale Development
The Pavilion project is poised to set new standards for architecture in Erbil. The design team created functional and calming spaces using eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices. The project includes a beautiful lagoon and social spaces, fostering community interaction and engagement, alongside needed residential areas. The design reflects local culture and international standards. Large, open spaces let in natural light and fresh air, while strategically placed greenery enhances well-being. Energy-efficient systems and renewable sources minimize the environmental impact.
Dome+Partners's Pavilion Large Scale Development emerges as a compelling exemplar of contemporary integrated urban design, demonstrating the sophisticated synthesis of vertical tower architecture with horizontal landscape and amenity programming that characterizes the most ambitious mixed-use developments of the early twenty-first century. The composition appears to engage thoughtfully with tropical modernist traditions while advancing a distinctly contemporary formal vocabulary, particularly evident in the organic curvilinear geometries of the connecting sky bridge that suggests affinities with parametric design methodologies and biomorphic architectural expression. The technical achievement of balancing four substantial tower masses within a unified compositional framework merits particular attention, as the designers have orchestrated varied tower heights and footprints to create visual rhythm and hierarchical clarity while maintaining cohesive material and formal languages across the ensemble. The integration of extensive planted terraces, verdant podium roofscapes, and the palm-lined promenades suggests a sophisticated understanding of biophilic design principles and the psychological benefits of nature integration within dense urban contexts. The central water feature with its striking pyramidal pavilion functions as both programmatic anchor and symbolic centerpiece, its crystalline geometry offering compositional counterpoint to the predominantly orthogonal tower forms and curvilinear landscape elements. The reflective pools surrounding this structure create opportunities for contemplation and visual extension, doubling the architectural forms through mirror imagery and introducing temporal variation through water movement and changing light conditions. One might observe how the composition invites consideration of contemporary approaches to urban placemaking, where the integration of hospitality, residential, commercial, and recreational programming within a carefully designed landscape framework aspires to create vibrant, livable urban destinations that serve diverse constituencies and temporal rhythms.

- Production Technology
- The Pavilion project is deeply committed to sustainability, implementing various eco-friendly strategies to reduce CO2 emissions and promote environmental stewardship. The development incorporates energy-efficient technologies such as high-performance insulation, energy-efficient windows, and state-of-the-art HVAC systems to minimize energy consumption. Renewable energy sources, including solar panels and geothermal systems, are utilized to power the project, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Design Challenge
- The hardest part of the Pavilion project was ensuring the seamless integration of sustainability and comfort. Balancing eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems with the high standards of comfort and elegance required meticulous planning and innovative solutions. Additionally, coordinating the efforts of various stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and contractors, to maintain consistency and collaboration throughout the design process was a significant challenge.
- Project Duration
- The project site is located in Erbil, Iraq. The works on the design started in September 2024 and design and construction are performed simultaneously at the moment.
- Operation Flow
- Our design promotes walkability to reduce vehicle emissions. Rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and efficient irrigation systems are implemented to promote sustainable water use and reduce consumption. By addressing these aspects, Pavilion sets a new standard for sustainable urban development in the region, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for Erbil and positioning the city as a leader in environmental innovation.
- Research
- The design research for the Pavilion project focused on creating elegant, naturally inspired spaces that blend sophistication with comfort. The project emphasized sustainability, innovative use of materials, and creating environments that promote well-being and luxury. The research included extensive studies on eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient design strategies, and the integration of natural elements to enhance the user experience.
The predicted societal impact includes enhancing community spaces, providing areas for cultural events and social interaction, and contributing to the local economy through increased tourism and job creation. Additionally, the Pavilion by Rams is expected to serve as a model for sustainable development, inspiring future projects to prioritize environmental responsibility and community engagement. - Inspiration
- While every project holds significance for an architect, some occupy a particularly special place in our hearts. It fills us with immense pride when we can enhance the lives of residents and set a benchmark for the entire region.
In countries like Iraq, it's common for new large developments to be gated communities, isolating residents from the rest of the city and limiting communication, equity, and creating boundaries. In our design for Pavilion, Erbil, we opened all social areas to the public, providing access to sports, green, and cultural zones for everyone. - Image Credits
