About Zhenbaoguan Museum
Zhenbaoguan is a private museum interior covering 750 square meters. The space displays a collection of artworks and wine inside a residence that also serves as an office and a place to receive guests. Cabinets, ceilings and floors are finished in black wood and stone, so attention stays on the exhibits. The cabinet lighting illuminates each artwork rather than the cabinet surfaces. Wine walls are arranged symmetrically along both sides of the main corridor, following Oriental symmetry aesthetics. Turns and level changes create a varied route through the rooms.
Zhenbaoguan Museum by Zhao Yunhai represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary interior design that synthesizes traditional aesthetic principles with innovative spatial thinking to create an environment of remarkable sophistication and cultural resonance. The space appears to engage with longstanding traditions of the scholar's studio and collector's cabinet, reimagined through a contemporary architectural vocabulary that emphasizes bold geometric expression in the striking angular ceiling structure. This overhead architecture, with its rhythmic interplay of dark linear elements and luminous panels, may reference traditional roof construction while asserting a distinctly modern formal identity through its dramatic angles and precise material articulation. The designer demonstrates exceptional command of material relationships, establishing a dialogue between the warmth of the herringbone wood flooring and the cooler presence of ebony-toned millwork, while the marble banding introduces refined textural variation that elevates the perimeter walls. Particularly noteworthy is the treatment of the display wall, where illuminated niches showcase collected objects against backgrounds featuring flowing organic patterns that suggest landscape imagery rendered in gold, creating intimate moments of visual discovery within the larger architectural statement. The seating arrangement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of scale and proportion, positioning contemporary furniture forms that honor clean modernist lines while their cream and olive tones establish harmony with the broader palette. Technical achievement is evident in the layered lighting strategy, which combines concealed cove illumination, integrated linear fixtures, and focused accent lighting to create atmospheric depth while ensuring functional visibility throughout the space. The presence of traditional artistic elements including what appears to be an ink wash painting depicting botanical subjects suggests the space serves as both contemporary gathering place and repository for cultural artifacts, inviting consideration of how designed environments can facilitate meaningful encounters between present and past, between innovative form and enduring tradition.

- The left and right sides of each wine wall is a repetition of the sequence, extending to the visual center point at the end of a specially furnished wine, the sense of perspective of each channel reaches the Confucian emphasis on neutral and calm. Similarly the Taoist concept of balance between yin and yang is also reflected with in the symmetrical aesthetics. The two sides of the symmetry can be seen as the mutual reflection of yin and yang, opposing and interdependent, together forming a complete whole.
- Design Challenge
- After all, it is still a private place, in addition to the space to receive guests should also meet the needs of the office residence, the whole should have a certain spirituality and sense of relaxation. The overall color scheme is light and elegant, the wall design symbols as simple as possible, the complex elements used in the top, the ground, the visual center is always a quiet sense of calm, with the paintings and calligraphy is still Zen, and everywhere in line with the meaning of to take the vegetarian decorations, casual value of its heart.

- When intervening in the project, because the client loved to collect wine, he wanted to have a large wine wall to display, and to talk about Chinese wine culture when showing guests around, each bottle of wine has its own representative of Chinese culture. When we designed the wine wall, we thought of the Oriental Symmetry Aesthetics as an art philosophy, and the wine wall was displayed in a balanced way on both sides of the main corridor, and this symmetrical form has a solemn sense of order.
- Research
- When setting up the spatial movement, set up a lot of turns and transitions. it hope that the rhythm of the space, the flow of people, and the line of sight can be used to change the scenery. As people move forward and pause in the space, or up and down the trajectory to create different physical feelings and experiences, so as to respond to the space, Time and Emotion, and to perceive the diversity and richness of the space. The space is perceived as diverse and rich.
- Inspiration
- When first met the owner of the Treasure House, there were many treasured works of art, each of which was a favorite.In order to party A better display of these works of art, in terms of display thought of the museum model,in the museum along the design of the flow of easy to see all the exhibits, and no matter the lighting display are maximized to amplify the beauty of the collection.
