About Tianmianshang Pavilion

Tianmianshang is a pavilion located in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. The pavilion stands behind an orange grove and offers a calm place to rest in nature. The design questions the usual distinction between floor, roof and ceiling, and between inside and outside. Undulating floor and roof surfaces form several threshold spaces. Four main walls are joined by two irregularly placed concrete walls and concrete columns, which blur spatial boundaries and add layers to the interior. The roof is a single lightweight steel structure with clean lines.

Tianmianshang Pavilion by jintao li engages a distinguished lineage of tensile architectural innovation that traces through the pioneering material investigations of the mid-twentieth century, when architects and engineers began exploring the structural and expressive possibilities of fabric membranes suspended in tension to create lightweight enclosures of remarkable spatial generosity with minimal material expenditure, a tradition that has evolved through subsequent decades to incorporate advanced computational design tools enabling increasingly complex geometries while maintaining the essential characteristics of lightness, translucency, and dynamic formal expression. The compositional achievement evident in this work resides in the careful calibration of curves and support points to create a form that appears simultaneously anchored and weightless, grounded yet aspiring, with the undulating membrane describing elegant parabolic arcs that suggest natural systems such as draped fabric responding to gravity, organic growth patterns, or aerodynamic surfaces shaped by invisible forces, while the white structural columns maintain crisp vertical clarity that establishes human scale and tectonic legibility within the fluid geometry. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material expression, with the warm neutral tone of the tensile fabric reading as natural and approachable rather than industrial or technological, creating visual harmony with the verdant landscape while maintaining sufficient contrast against the sky to ensure formal clarity and volumetric definition, and the translucent quality of the membrane material transforms the structure into a light-modulating device that filters harsh sunlight into diffused illumination beneath, suggesting considerations of comfort, environmental response, and phenomenological experience beyond purely formal concerns. The integration with the landscape through the sculptural earthwork mound reveals thoughtful consideration of the relationship between architecture and site, with the rising landform creating a deliberate threshold between the surrounding level terrain and the elevated pavilion space, inviting procession and establishing the structure as a destination within the broader landscape rather than merely an object placed upon it, while the preservation and incorporation of mature trees demonstrates respect for existing site ecology and temporal continuity, acknowledging that the architectural intervention participates in a living environment with its own history and ongoing natural processes. Thematically, the work appears to explore the possibilities of shelter as gesture rather than enclosure, protection that maintains openness and visual connection to the surrounding environment, and the creation of defined place through minimal means, suggesting investigations into the essential qualities that transform undifferentiated landscape into human habitat, neutral space into meaningful place, and functional covering into celebratory architectural expression. The upturned edges at the membrane perimeter evoke organic metaphors of unfurling, blooming, or taking flight, imbuing the structure with a sense of vitality and formal energy that animates the pastoral setting and suggests the possibility of transformation, growth, or aspiration encoded within built form. One might consider how such sheltering gestures create conditions for gathering, pause, contemplation, or ceremony within the continuous flow of landscape, how the interplay between the geometric precision of engineered curves and the organic irregularity of living vegetation generates productive tension between human ordering and natural process, and how temporary-appearing tensile structures paradoxically achieve a sense of permanence through formal confidence and material authenticity that invites sustained engagement and repeated visitation.

Unique Properties
Art Institute School of Xiaoyan wants to challenge the notion of floor, roof/ceiling, interiority and exteriority. The undulating floor and roof/ceiling create various threshold spaces within. Planar permutation of walls and columns makes interiority versus exteriority a little harder to parse. AIXY hopes this design becomes a stimulus for an organic formation of partiality from the users towards various subspace within, against the backdrop of a seemingly uniform-in-concept arrangement.

Production Technology
Its column, using concrete structure, in addition to the four main walls created for the interior space, also added two irregularly arranged concrete walls, which are not simply used to separate the space but blur the boundaries of the space, forming a spatial structure from unorganized to shaped. This design not only enhances the stability of the building but also gives the whole space more layers of change.
A one-piece, lightweight steel structure is used for the roof. This design not only visually presents clean and smooth lines but also strengthens the sense of unity and lightness of the building as a whole, making the building seem to float in the surrounding natural environment. It not only conforms to the aesthetics of modern architecture but also interprets the architectural concept of man and nature.
Design Challenge
This project was completed by the students and tutors of Art Institute School of Xiaoyan, during which the communication and design of the program, as well as the coordination between the students was challenging.
Project Duration
It is located in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province.
Operation Flow
Art Institute School of Xiaoyan wants to create a space that breaks traditional boundaries, a building that is not just a physical entity but an experience. This pavilion is situated behind an orange grove, where people can temporarily disconnect from the hustle and bustle and experience nature.
Research
When a space is abstracted to its elementary components, people are given a chance to decompose and re-examine these components on a more fundamental level.
Since mankind adopted the concept of shelter as a tradition, “the threshing floor was a place of work but also a place of gathering, dancing, ritual, and worship” (Elements of Architecture, Rem Koolhaas).
Art Institute School of Xiaoyan intended for the project to be a space of action and gathering. Approaching the request with its intended abstractedness, they want to challenge the notion of floor, roof/ceiling, interiority and exteriority. The undulating floor and roof/ceiling create various threshold spaces within. Planar permutation of walls and columns makes interiority versus exteriority a little harder to parse. They hope this design becomes a stimulus for an organic formation of partiality from the users towards various subspace within, against the backdrop of a seemingly uniform-in-concept arrangement.
Inspiration
From plaza to apartment floors to parliament floor, the idea of floor has been a fundamental symbol for action, be it the more private types or more public types such as a place for negotiation, congregation. Similarly, the roof or ceiling (in this case Art Institute of Xiaoyan is intentionally obscuring the distinction between the two), is the reciprocal of floor, completing the concept of a sheltered space, and has evolved in recent years to being an envelope for practicality (hidden structural system, HVAC system, false ceiling etc)
