Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The core principle behind Conexión is empathy through technology—we wanted to create a design that doesn’t just track data, but strengthens the emotional connection between couples during pregnancy. The idea was inspired by conversations with expectant parents who shared how difficult it can be to understand each other’s feelings and stress levels during this time. Our goal was to reimagine wearable and app technology as a relationship co-pilot that nurtures love, communication, and shared joy.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Our main focus was to humanize the pregnancy experience—bridging emotional gaps and helping couples feel seen, supported, and connected. We wanted to achieve more than just functionality; we aimed to design emotional rituals, spark everyday appreciation, and reduce conflict through meaningful micro-interactions. We also focused heavily on inclusive design and usability, ensuring both partners, regardless of their tech comfort level, could easily engage with the product.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
We hope to evolve Conexión into a real-world product that can support millions of couples globally. Future plans include expanding its use beyond pregnancy, into early parenthood and relationship wellness more broadly. We also aim to integrate with healthcare ecosystems to provide emotionally intelligent support alongside medical care. Collaborations with maternal health organizations and wearable tech companies are also on the roadmap to scale impact.
Grand Interview
Your innovative dual-interface system in Conexion Mobile Application addresses a crucial gap in pregnancy support - could you elaborate on how you identified and validated this unique approach to connecting expectant couples?
The inspiration for Conexión started close to home, through conversations with friends who were expecting. We noticed that while there are many apps focused on fetal development or pregnancy education, very few addressed the emotional experience of the couple. Our in-depth research confirmed this: emotional support, especially from a partner, plays a critical role during pregnancy; yet, most existing tools treat the journey as a solo experience for women. We found that expectant fathers often want to be supportive, but lack clear guidance or understanding of what their partner is going through. That’s when we envisioned the dual-interface system — one that recognizes each partner's unique perspective while strengthening their emotional bond. The design includes personalized prompts for men, such as: “Your partner is in week 10 — hormonal changes may affect her mood. Here’s how you can support her today.” These small yet empathetic nudges help bridge the emotional gap with timely, relevant insights. To validate this approach, we conducted user interviews and prototype testing with real couples. Their feedback helped refine how each interface works individually while still feeling connected, creating a shared experience rooted in care, not just content.
The integration of AI-driven emotional analysis with biometric sensing in Conexion Mobile Application represents a significant technological advancement - what inspired this combination and how does it enhance the emotional bond between partners?
The idea to merge AI and biometric sensing came from a desire to move beyond surface-level check-ins. During pregnancy, emotions can shift rapidly, and couples may struggle to communicate those changes in real time. We wanted to create a more intuitive system that could gently help each partner understand how the other is feeling, even when words are hard to find.Emotion detection has always been a fascinating and rapidly evolving field. Even tech giants like Apple are investing heavily in exploring how devices can better sense and respond to emotional states, which shows how important and relevant this space is becoming. For Conexión, bringing this capability into the context of pregnancy allows us to support emotional well-being in a meaningful, personal way.By combining biometric data (like heart rate variability from wearables) with emotional context cues analyzed through AI, Conexión can detect mood patterns and offer thoughtful nudges or insights tailored to each partner. For instance, if one partner shows signs of stress, the app might suggest a small act of kindness or shared mindfulness exercise. This integration was inspired by both neuroscience research and an empathy-driven design mindset, understanding that emotions are deeply tied to physiology and relational dynamics. Instead of replacing connection, the technology quietly supports it in the background, helping partners respond to each other with more understanding, especially during emotionally intense moments.
Given the sensitive nature of pregnancy-related data, how does Conexion Mobile Application balance comprehensive health tracking with privacy concerns while maintaining its core mission of strengthening emotional connections?
emotional and biometric data — especially during such an intimate time as pregnancy — requires deep sensitivity and trust. Our goal wasn’t just to collect data, but to handle it in a way that respects each user’s autonomy and emotional safety.Conexión uses privacy-by-design principles, ensuring that data is collected transparently, stored securely, and only shared between partners with explicit consent. Users have full control over what they choose to reveal or hide, and can adjust those preferences anytime. For features like mood sharing or biometric insights, we designed soft, opt-in entry points — so the experience always feels supportive, never intrusive. We also worked to minimize data retention and avoid unnecessary tracking. Our priority is not to “own” user data, but to facilitate meaningful emotional connection between partners. This balance between offering meaningful support and protecting user dignity defines the integrity of Conexión. Ultimately, we believe emotional design and ethical design go hand in hand. Respecting privacy strengthens the very trust and intimacy the app is designed to foster.

- Production Technology
- Conexion was developed using a user centered design approach, combining biometric sensing and AI driven emotional analysis for personalized recommendations. The Apple Watch detects mood fluctuations with pressure and heart rate sensors, while the app uses emotion tracking algorithms and health data APIs for real time sharing. Cloud based architecture ensures seamless device synchronization, with design elements created using Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge was creating an intuitive, empathetic design that addresses the emotional complexity of pregnancy. Balancing personalization with simplicity, especially when using AI and health data, was tough. We also had to consider historical and social factors like gender roles in pregnancy. Technical issues like real-time syncing and emotion tracking accuracy added complexity. Incorporating fun, engaging elements like gamification without losing the app's supportive tone was crucial.
- Research
- The research focused on understanding the emotional and physical needs of expectant couples. We conducted qualitative interviews and surveys with couples, analyzing the data through thematic coding. The study highlighted the importance of emotional support for both partners and the need for tailored guidance throughout pregnancy. This approach challenged the norm of apps only catering to women, expanding our understanding of support needs and influencing both design and societal views on pregnancy care.
- Inspiration
- Pregnancy is a transformative journey, but it also brings emotional uncertainty and communication barriers. Expectant fathers want to support their partners but often struggle to understand how, while mothers experience physical and emotional changes that are hard to express. Despite growing attention to maternal health, relationship dynamics are often overlooked. Recognizing this gap, we set out to create a product that strengthens emotional bonds and fosters shared understanding.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2023 in Savannah, Georgia and was initially completed the 1st phase develop in October 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Conexión simplifies the pregnancy journey with two intuitive interfaces for husbands and wives. After selecting their role during registration, users receive tailored notifications and insights. The system tracks emotional and physical states via Apple Watch, sharing real-time updates between partners to foster empathy. Weekly pregnancy milestones, expert advice, and reminders for appointments or partner messages keep couples informed and connected. By blending emotional reflection with practical guidance, Conexión strengthens bonds and ensures a smoother, more supportive pregnancy experience.
