About I Land Residence
I Land is a residential interior design for a 145 square meter apartment in Zhubei, Hsinchu, Taiwan. The layout follows a central axis that integrates pipelines and cabinetry into one system. An N-shaped storage structure separates the social area from the private rooms while the plan remains open. Hidden soft-close hardware and a rounded-edge foyer cabinet support a clean appearance. The study can be closed with a glass and metal sliding door. Mineral-textured plaster, light wood veneer and stone-patterned tiles form the material palette.
YU FEN LEE's I Land Residence exemplifies the evolved principles of contemporary residential design, where spatial fluidity intersects with material restraint to create environments that honor both functional pragmatism and aesthetic contemplation. This open-plan interior demonstrates sophisticated spatial articulation without reliance on conventional room divisions, instead employing tonal shifts, materiality changes, and furniture placement to delineate distinct functional zones within a continuous volumetric envelope. The compositional strategy reveals careful attention to proportional relationships and visual weight distribution, with the curved golden-ochre sectional sofa providing sculptural presence and chromatic warmth that anchors the living zone, while the cognac leather lounge chair at right introduces a complementary organic form and saturated accent hue that prevents compositional symmetry while maintaining overall balance. The designer's chromatic approach demonstrates notable sophistication, building upon a foundation of achromatic and near-neutral surfaces that recede visually, allowing the carefully calibrated warm accent hues in the upholstery selections to command attention without overwhelming the spatial experience. The integration of natural and artificial illumination sources achieves layered lighting quality, with diffused daylight entering from the left through horizontal blinds creating gentle atmospheric luminosity and subtle directional modeling, supplemented by recessed ambient lighting that ensures even illumination distribution across all functional zones, and focused pendant fixtures above the dining area providing task-appropriate intensity and contributing vertical sculptural elements within the predominantly horizontal spatial composition. The material palette speaks to contemporary preferences for tactile quality and natural expression, combining the organic warmth of wood grain visible in cabinetry and accent paneling with the cool precision of large-format porcelain tile flooring, the yielding comfort of upholstered seating with the structured geometry of metal and leather lounge furniture, creating a material dialogue that enriches the sensory experience of inhabitation. The spatial sequence from foreground living zone through middle-ground dining area to background kitchen creates a procession of domestic activities, each zone given appropriate volumetric definition and visual character while maintaining openness and interconnection, a planning approach that reflects evolving patterns of contemporary dwelling where boundaries between cooking, dining, and relaxing become fluid rather than fixed. One might observe how the residence invites consideration of how restraint in chromatic and formal vocabulary can paradoxically create richer spatial experiences, where subtle variations in tone, texture, and illumination quality provide continuous visual interest and sensory stimulation without reliance on decorative excess, suggesting that residential environments achieve enduring satisfaction through fundamental design excellence rather than transient stylistic gestures.

- Unique Properties
- The project centers on a central axis that guides both layout and functionality. The designer integrated pipelines and cabinetry into a unified system, optimizing views while subtly dividing social and private areas with an 'N-shaped' storage structure. Hidden soft-close hardware ensures a clean aesthetic. Sightlines are carefully curated, with a rounded-edge foyer cabinet welcoming visitors and guiding them toward the open-plan spaces. The study can be enclosed with a glass and metal sliding door, while rounded structural beams create a cozy atmosphere.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This 145-square-meter project follows the concept of 'starting from scratch,' reorganizing the layout for optimal flow. The social area, including the kitchen, dining, living room, and study, is positioned to the right, with the study connected to the master bedroom to capture natural light. This creates a seamless, luxury club-like atmosphere. On the left, the private area features the parent's and children's rooms, balancing shared family life with personal space for comfort, privacy, and connection.

- Production Technology
- The project features mineral-textured plaster, creating a refined wall surface with a matte finish that interacts subtly with light, casting a soft, diffused glow that contrasts with the glossy tiled flooring. The cabinetry is crafted from light-toned KD wood veneer, paired with stone-patterned tiles, metal elements, and glass, embracing a modern minimalist aesthetic. The color composition consists of 30% low-saturation tones and 70% colorless elements, establishing a calm and layered visual experience that enhances the space's natural ambiance.
- Design Challenge
- The primary challenge was ensuring ample storage while preserving panoramic lighting. Traditional storage solutions often obstruct both light and circulation. To address this, the design integrates hidden cabinetry, making storage an organic part of the space. A distinctive N-shaped cabinetry system creates recessed storage zones accessible from both the front and back, maintaining a clean, uncluttered look. This innovative approach allows light to flow freely, ensuring that functionality and aesthetics coexist seamlessly.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in February 2022 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- This design diverges from typical projects by incorporating storage within an open-plan layout, creating invisible, pocket-like storage areas that maintain seamless circulation and order. After moving in, the family of four praised the space, noting that despite the ample storage, the aesthetic remains clean and uncluttered. The exceptional natural lighting and panoramic views of the mountains and city provide a relaxing and rejuvenating environment, making daily living both peaceful and invigorating.
