About Kherson Park

Kherson Park integrates ecological sustainability with community involvement in its innovative landscape design. It features green areas, permeable surfaces, and energy efficient lighting for public use. Additionally, it promotes Stem education, historical knowledge, and community interaction through interactive exhibits and augmented reality experiences. The park is a cultural landmark, celebrating aerospace heritage while inspiring the next generation in science and technology at the heart of the City of Kent, WA.

Yitong Du's Kherson Park emerges from the landscape architecture tradition that understands public space as both functional infrastructure and narrative canvas, inviting communities to engage with place through layers of meaning that extend beyond utility into realms of imagination and cultural storytelling. This installation demonstrates sophisticated integration of themed play environments within ecologically responsible landscape restoration, a dual commitment characteristic of contemporary practice that honors both human need for wonder and environmental stewardship obligations. The central playground structure, conceived as a sculptural interpretation of lunar exploration technology, exemplifies the designer's compositional intelligence in balancing whimsy with structural clarity, the warm metallic tones of the fabricated module harmonizing rather than competing with the seasonal brilliance of autumn foliage surrounding it, while the saturated blue slide provides necessary chromatic emphasis that guides the eye and activates the composition. Technically, the work exhibits careful attention to spatial sequence and experiential progression, the circular paved platform establishing a defined territory for active play while fresh planting beds frame and soften the harder surfaces, young deciduous trees positioned to provide eventual canopy and seasonal spectacle as evidenced by their current fiery autumn display, and the sentinel conifers offering year-round structure and vertical counterpoint to the predominantly horizontal composition. The educational pavilion integrated into the middle ground suggests the designer's commitment to interpretation and learning, physical structures supporting cognitive engagement with place, theme, and perhaps local ecological or historical narratives, the warm wood tones and accessible scale creating approachable infrastructure that invites rather than intimidates. Chromatic choices reveal a designer working with both immediate visual impact and long-term seasonal transformation, the current autumn palette of golds, oranges, and reds creating spectacular temporary color fields that will yield to winter structure, spring renewal, and summer verdancy, each season offering distinct aesthetic and experiential qualities, while the evergreen components ensure consistent presence and form throughout annual cycles. The architectural backdrop, a contemporary multi-story structure with generous glazing and warm brick materiality, provides urban context and suggests the park functions within a denser developed setting, perhaps serving adjacent institutional, residential, or mixed-use populations, the building's horizontal window banding echoing the landscape's layered organization and its substantial scale emphasizing the park's role as breathing space and relief within built environment. Thematically, the space invites contemplation of exploration and discovery as fundamental human impulses, the space-age playground metaphor suggesting journeys both outward to cosmos and inward to imagination, encouraging children and adults alike to consider themselves as explorers navigating unknown territories whether on climbing structures or in life's broader adventures. What forms of exploration, terrestrial or cosmic, literal or metaphorical, might this space inspire in those who gather, play, learn, and rest within its carefully composed zones?

Production Technology
Kherson Park’s design blends historical research, user-centered planning, and advanced technology. Drawing inspiration from Kent’s aerospace legacy, it showcases thematic spatial planning with celestial motifs and interactive exhibits. Durable and sustainable materials ensure longevity, while augmented reality boosts engagement. The park’s smart lighting and eco-friendly landscaping reduce environmental impact, creating an educational, immersive space that honors history and inspires future generations.
Design Challenge
Kherson Park faced challenges balancing historical authenticity with educational and leisure activities related to Kent’s aerospace heritage, requiring collaboration with historians and the use of NASA archives. Safety regulations and budget constraints affected material choices, while augmented reality integration posed technical challenges. Collaborating with Boeing and local experts, we created an interactive, accessible, and cost-effective design, transforming space history into an engaging public experience.
Project Duration
The project began its planning phase in 2019 in the City of Kent, WA, USA, and completed construction, opening to the public in May 2023.
Operation Flow
Kherson Park serves as a vibrant venue for families, schools, and community events to delve into space history and STEM education. Guests can discover the lunar rover replica, view the astronaut sculpture, and interact with the mission control panel, while augmented reality experiences animate space exploration. The park’s lush green areas and open spaces create an ideal backdrop for picnics, educational workshops, and public gatherings, establishing it as a center for learning, recreation, and community engagement.
Research
Kherson Park's design research prioritized user engagement, honoring Kent’s aerospace heritage while creating an inviting space for education, sustainability, and interactivity. We combined archival research, community input, and augmented reality to inform the park’s design, involving aerospace historians, local engineers, educators, students, and community members. Public workshops gathered feedback on playability and educational value. The final design features lunar landing play structures and AR experiences, making history accessible and engaging.
Kherson Park has become a premier destination for families and visitors, reinforcing Kent’s identity as a hub for innovation while inspiring future generations through interactive learning and space exploration.
Inspiration
Kherson Park's redevelopment honors the city’s aerospace history, particularly the lunar rovers designed by Boeing engineers in the late 1960s. The design aims to celebrate this legacy and inspire future generations in STEM, creating an interactive, space-themed memorial and educational environment.
