About Sunrise Apartment

Sunrise is a 320 square meter apartment interior in Curitiba, Brazil. The design follows minimalist principles and treats natural light as a central element. Natural oak veneer, limestone and neutral textiles form a soft palette. Custom millwork is integrated into the walls to give visual continuity between the living areas. The open layout allows fluid circulation and views of Barigui Park and the city skyline. Custom pieces, including the gourmet table and the Dolomite Armchair, reinforce the identity of the project. The intent is a calm urban retreat that supports well-being.

Gabriela Casagrande's Sunrise Apartment exemplifies the contemporary pursuit of domestic tranquility through architectural restraint and material warmth, positioning itself within a lineage of residential design that synthesizes Scandinavian minimalism with Japanese spatial sensibilities and Mediterranean warmth. The work demonstrates exceptional compositional intelligence through its orchestration of vertical timber elements that frame and define spatial zones while maintaining visual permeability, allowing light and sight lines to flow unimpeded through the living environment. The chromatic strategy achieves sophisticated unity through rigorous adherence to an analogous palette of warm neutrals, where blonde oak, cream textiles, and ivory surfaces create a tonal envelope of remarkable coherence, punctuated thoughtfully by the terracotta warmth of a singular pedestal table that anchors the seating arrangement. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precision of millwork detailing, the considered proportions of architectural elements, and the thoughtful curation of furnishings whose biomorphic silhouettes provide essential counterpoint to rectilinear architectural geometry. The suspended luminaires, with their pleated organic forms suggesting both handcraft tradition and contemporary design innovation, introduce sculptural presence while maintaining the subdued elegance that characterizes the entire composition. Thematically, the space appears to engage with contemporary questions of dwelling, sanctuary, and the psychological benefits of visual quietude, offering a meditation on how architectural restraint and material honesty might foster human wellbeing. The translucent window treatment transforms natural light into a diffused luminous presence, suggesting the work's titular reference to dawn light and the promise of renewal that morning illumination traditionally symbolizes. One might observe how the interplay of curved and rectilinear elements speaks to enduring aesthetic dialogues between nature and geometry, while the warm material palette evokes associations with natural landscapes and organic processes. Viewers are invited to consider how the careful calibration of proportion, material, and light in residential design might shape the quality of daily lived experience and the cultivation of domestic peace.

Production Technology
This project was entirely developed using BIM, from civil engineering plans to interior designs and custom furniture detailing. This approach enabled precise compatibility among the various disciplines involved, optimizing the construction process and ensuring a high level of detailing. The millwork was meticulously designed to reinforce visual continuity and functionality, using natural oak veneer and limestone as the primary materials. The seamless integration of architectural elements and carefully selected materials ensured a balance between aesthetics and practicality, reflecting the essence of the project.
Design Challenge
Designing and detailing the millwork was a key challenge, requiring a balance between form and function. The millwork integrates the project's concepts, ensuring continuity between spaces without overwhelming them visually. The combination of built-in and loose furniture was carefully planned to maintain a functional and practical environment while preserving a minimalist essence. The final result is a harmonious space that blends aesthetics, comfort, and flexibility.
Project Duration
The Sunrise Apartment is located in Ecoville, Curitiba, Brazil, offering a privileged view of Barigui Park and the city skyline. Curitiba's humid subtropical climate, with mild temperatures and significant variations, influenced the choice of materials and natural lighting strategy to enhance thermal comfort. The project began in 2023 and was completed in 2024.
Operation Flow
The sensory experience provided by the Sunrise Apartment is one of its defining qualities. Every choice of material, ergonomics, and lighting was designed to evoke a sense of calm and well-being for its residents. The integration of spaces promotes a fluid circulation, visually connecting the environments without losing the feeling of warmth. The abundant natural light and connection with the external landscape create a tranquil atmosphere, where time seems to slow down and every detail invites contemplation and togetherness.
Research
The project follows minimalist principles, eliminating excess to emphasize the essential. Neuroarchitecture guided material and color choices to promote calmness and well-being. This approach positively impacts residents' daily lives, creating a functional yet serene living space.
Inspiration
