About Roof House Residential
The Roof House project, situated on the roof of a car showroom in Kermanshah, challenges conventional beliefs about residential spaces. This project explores alternative ways to transfigure the house concept and shift its understanding from a new perspective. It reinterprets the generic house through three key concepts: Destruction, where external forces deform the house; Explosion, where structural and non-structural elements exaggerate and withdraw from the debris; and Expansion, where objects dominate others by spreading their essence.
Within contemporary architectural discourse exploring the intersection of residential density and spatial quality, Roof House Residential demonstrates compositional strategies that address urban intensification through vertical stacking while maintaining individual dwelling identity and environmental amenity, the design seemingly engaging with traditions of modernist social housing reinterpreted through contemporary material palettes and sustainability consciousness. The structural achievement evident in the cantilevered upper volumes suggests sophisticated engineering that transforms functional necessity into expressive formal gesture, these projections creating sheltered outdoor spaces at ground level while establishing visual dynamism that prevents the massing from reading as monolithic, the interplay between solid and void generating a permeable quality despite substantial built volume. Chromatic discipline restrains the palette to near-monochromatic grays and whites punctuated by organic green interventions, this restraint focusing attention on volumetric relationships and shadow patterns rather than surface decoration, the subtle warm-cool temperature shifts between materials creating visual interest through tonal modulation rather than chromatic contrast. The integration of extensive planting across multiple terrace levels suggests engagement with biophilic design principles, these landscape interventions performing environmental functions including thermal moderation and air quality improvement while providing psychological benefits and visual softness that counterbalance geometric severity. Fenestration strategies alternate between generous transparency offering daylight penetration and visual connection to surroundings, and more protected openings preserving privacy, this variation suggesting responsiveness to orientation and internal program rather than application of uniform curtain wall systems. The ground plane treatment establishes urban context through material choices evoking pedestrian zones and vehicular access, the presence of parked automobiles anchoring the composition in contemporary metropolitan reality while landscape interventions signal intention toward humanized public realm. The architectural language evokes lineages extending through mid-century modernist experiments in residential typology while incorporating contemporary concerns around sustainability, density, and urban livability, the clear geometric vocabulary and structural expression suggesting rationalist traditions tempered by recognition of human psychological needs for nature contact and spatial variety. Viewers might contemplate how residential architecture negotiates between individual dwelling aspirations and collective urban needs, how contemporary design addresses environmental imperatives while maintaining aesthetic coherence, and what constitutes home within increasingly dense metropolitan contexts.

- Unique Properties
- "Roof House" is at the entrance of Kermanshah providence, Gilane-Gharb, located on a flat roof 15 ×32 meters of a car showroom. The location of the current situation shows a house in a non-residential, somehow industrial area. In general, at the beginning, it challenges the public beliefs about the location of the house.

- Production Technology
- To integrate it with the existing structure, the framework of the original buildings was extended to ensure continuity with the new construction. Also, the LSF (Light Steel Frame) system was utilized to reduce the structural weight of an extension.
- Design Challenge
- This project started from a generic type of house that existed in our common sense. Therefore, these questions were raised. How can we transfigure the house concept in another way?
How is it possible to shift the understanding of the house from our perspective? - Project Duration
- The Project Started in January 2024 and finished in june 2024 in Hamedan, Iran
- Operation Flow
- So as we can see, three keywords indicate our path during the project.
The first one is "Destruction". Destruction is the method which the object itself is demolished by some external forces that are pushing pressure on our generic house to get deformed from its previous state. The second keyword is "Explosion". When the object exaggerates its elements, such as structural properties (beams, columns) or non-structural things (windows, doors, or some of the roofs), we can realize that the explosion is happening inside the house. Somehow the object is withdrawn from the debris itself. The last one is Expansion. In this way, one of the objects in this house is trying to dominate the other objects by infecting or grasping the other object's essence. in "Roof House" a few methods were executed to evoke our object to emerge for us these concepts of form which are occurring in the generic house. As you follow the drawings in the project, you can see the pool on the roof as an object distributed itself by expanding its material on the surrounding objects. Or you will see some destructured objects disclosing themselves by overtaking the current existing generic house. - Research
- The main purpose of this project is to experiment on the generic model of the house. Hence, for this idea of transformation of the generic object, we are following three strategies to execute the concept of form. The first one is Destruction, which emerges from the external forces on the object. The second one is Explosion, in which the object is exaggerating its properties to transfigure itself. And the last one is Expansion. In this strategy, the object’s features infect the surrounding objects and try to disturb their essence.
- Inspiration
- The project began with a generic type of house that exists in common understanding. In this context, the question was raised: how can the concept of a house be transfigured in a new way? How can the understanding of a house be shifted from a different perspective? "Roof House" is not merely a generic house; rather, it represents what remains of the generic house. This is referred to as object debris, a state that emerges when the conventional perception of a house is dismantled.
